Serum Total Sialic Acid and Highly Sensitive C-reactive Protein: Prognostic Markers for the Diabetic Nephropathy.

Background: This study was undertaken to evaluate and establish the role of total sialic acid (TSA) and highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its correlation with complications such as diabetic nephropathy.

Materials And Methods: One hundred fifty-seven patients with T2DM with nephropathy (DN) and 162 patients of T2DM without nephropathy (DM) along with 165 unrelated age and sex-matched healthy controls were included in the study. Serum glucose (fasting and postprandial) levels, renal profile, and lipid profile were done as per standard protocol.

Pilomatricoma Mimicking Ruptured Epidermal Cyst in a Middle Aged Woman.

Pilomatricoma is a benign tumor arising from the hair matrical cells. Most pilomatricomas appear in the first two decades of life as a solitary skin to a bluish colored nodule on head-neck area with an occasional sign of inflammation. Here, we present a case of pilomatricoma which appeared at 36 years of age with a history of recurrent inflammation and discharge mimicking ruptured epidermal cyst.

Stem cells have inherent properties of self-renewal and differentiation. Background: Despite high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer in Indian women, no study has been done in tribal populations whose socio-sexual lifestyle is different. Therefore, HPV screening has been carried out in pre-adolescent, adolescent and young adult tribal girls using self-collected urine samples.

Methods: 20-35 ml self-collected midstream urine samples were obtained from a total of 2278 healthy tribal girls (9-25 years) comprising pre-adolescent, adolescent and young adults from three Indian states: Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Breast screening is the medical screening of asymptomatic, apparently healthy women for breast lump in an attempt to achieve an earlier diagnosis. The assumption is that the early detection will improve outcomes. In western countries, breast screening programs have led to a significant reduction in mortality and improved prognosis of patients with breast cancer.

Oncocytoma of oral cavity mimicking as jaw tumor.

Oncocytoma of major salivary gland is a fairly common benign tumour encountered, but its occurrence in oral minor salivary gland is a rare entity. Here we report a case of a giant minor salivary gland oncocytoma mimicking a jaw tumour which was successfully excised along with a review of literature.

Evaluation of digital infra-red thermal imaging as an adjunctive screening method for breast carcinoma: a pilot study.

Background: Early screening plays a pivotal role in management of breast cancer. Given the socio-economic situation in India, there is a strong felt need for a screening tool which reaches the masses rather than waiting for the masses to reach tertiary centers to be screened. Digital infra-red thermal imaging (DITI) or breast thermography as a screening test offers this possibility and needs to be carefully assessed in Indian scenario.

Prospective randomized controlled comparison of caudal bupivacaine and ropivacaine in pediatric patients.

Background: It is common in medical practice to see patients having persistent pain and radiculopathy even after undergoing discectomy surgery. Inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukins are produced at the site of disc herniation and are now considered responsible for the pain perceived by the patient. This study has used high sensitive C-reactive protein (HSCRP) assay for predicting inflammation around the nerve roots on very same principle, which has used HSCRP for predicting coronary artery diseases in current clinical practice.
