Chitosan, a biocompatible polysaccharide, finds a wide range of applications, inter alia as an antimicrobial agent, stabilizer of food products, cosmetics, and in the targeted delivery of drugs and stem cells. This work represents a comprehensive review of the properties of chitosan molecule and its aqueous solutions uniquely combining theoretical modeling and experimental results. The emphasis is on physicochemical aspects which were sparsely considered in previous reviews.

The question as to why deoxidized SrTiO becomes metallic and superconducting at extremely low levels of oxygen vacancy concentration has been a mystery for many decades. Here, we show that the real amount of effused oxygen during thermal reduction, which is needed to induce superconducting properties, is in the range of only 10/cm and thus even lower than the critical carrier concentrations assumed previously (10-10/cm). By performing detailed investigations of the optical and electrical properties down to the nanoscale, we reveal that filaments are forming during reduction along a network of dislocations in the surface layer.

Oxysterols are interesting molecules due to their dual nature, reflecting beneficial and harmful effects on the body. An issue that still needs to be solved is how slight modification of their structure owing to the location of the additional polar group in the molecules affects their biological activity. With this in mind, we selected three side chain-hydroxylated oxysterols namely: 20(S)-hydroxycholesterol (20(S)-OH), 24(S)-hydroxycholesterol (24(S)-OH), and 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OH), and examined their behavior in mixtures with the bioactive sphingolipid - sphingomyelin (SM).

Results of the neutron powder diffraction measurements carried out for RPtIn (R = Tb-Tm) are reported. The compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure of the LuNiIn-type with the rare earth atoms occupying three different sublattices. Neutron diffraction data reveal that at low temperatures the rare earth magnetic moments order below the critical temperature equal to 105, 93, 28, 12 and 3.

Polylactic acid (PLA), a polymer derived from renewable resources, is gaining increasing attention in the development of biomedical devices due to its cost-effectiveness, low immunogenicity, and biodegradability. However, its inherent hydrophobicity remains a problem, leading to poor cell adhesion features. On this basis, the aim of this work was to develop a method for functionalizing the surface of PLA films with a biopolymer, chitosan (CH), which was proved to be a material with intrinsic cell adhesive properties, but whose mechanical properties are insufficient to be used alone.

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is a label-free analytical technique that characterizes molecular systems, potentially even with a nanometric resolution. In principle, the metallic plasmonic probe is illuminated with a laser beam generating the localized surface plasmons, which induce a strong local electric field enhancement in close proximity to the probe. Such field enhancement improves the Raman scattering cross-section from the sample volume localized near the probe apex.

A simple and efficient method for the synthesis of biodegradable, highly branched polycaprolactone (PCL) is presented. The solvent-free (bulk) reaction was carried out via ring opening polymerization (ROP), catalyzed by tin octanoate Sn(Oct), and it employed hyperbranched polyamide (HPPA) as a macro-initiator. The core-shell structure of the obtained products (PCL-HPPA), with the hyperbranched HPPA core and linear PCL chains as shell, was in the focus of the product characterization.

This study explores and compares the limits for photosynthesis in subzero temperatures of six Antarctic lichens: Sphaerophorus globosus, Caloplaca regalis, Umbilicaria antarctica, Pseudephebe minuscula, Parmelia saxatilis and Lecania brialmontii combining linear cooling and chlorophyll fluorescence methods. The results revealed triphasic S-curves in the temperature response of the maximum quantum yield (F/F) and effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Φ) for all species. All investigated species showed a high level of cryoresistance with critical temperatures (T) below -20 °C.

This study presents a new approach to designing a lithocholic acid functionalized oligomer (OLithocholicAA-X) that can be used as a drug carrier with additional, beneficial activity. Namely, this novel oligomer can incorporate an anti-cancer drug due to the application of an effective backbone as its component (lithocholic acid) alone is known to have anticancer activity. The manuscript presents the potential of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) for label-free characterization of extracellular microvesicles (EVs) and their isolated membranes derived from red blood cells (RBCs) at the nanoscale and at the single-molecule level, providing detection of a few individual amino acids, protein and lipid membrane compartments. The study shows future directions for research, such as investigating the use of the mentioned techniques for the detection and diagnosis of diseases. We demonstrate that SERS and TERS are powerful techniques for identifying the biochemical composition of EVs and their membranes, allowing the detection of small molecules, lipids, and proteins.

The lack of specific and sensitive early diagnostic options for pancreatic cancer (PC) results in patients being largely diagnosed with late-stage disease, thus inoperable and burdened with high mortality. Molecular spectroscopic methodologies, such as Raman or infrared spectroscopies, show promise in becoming a leader in screening for early-stage cancer diseases, including PC. However, should such technology be introduced, the identification of differentiating spectral features between various cancer types is required.

The present study investigates silicone transfer occurring during microcontact printing (μCP) of lectins with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamps and its impact on the adhesion of cells. Static adhesion assays and single-cell force spectroscopy (SCFS) are used to compare adhesion of nonmalignant (HCV29) and cancer (HT1376) bladder cells, respectively, to high-affinity lectin layers (PHA-L and WGA, respectively) prepared by physical adsorption and μCP. The chemical composition of the μCP lectin patterns was monitored by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS).

A better understanding of the abnormal protein aggregation and the effect of anti-aggregation agents on the fibrillation pathways and the secondary structure of aggregates can determine strategies for the early treatment of dementia. Herein, we present a combination of experimental and theoretical studies providing new insights into the influence of the anti-aggregation drug bexarotene on the secondary structure of individual amyloid-β aggregates and its primary aggregation. The molecular rearrangements and the spatial distribution of β-sheets within individual aggregates were monitored at the nanoscale with infrared nanospectroscopy.

Immunosensors that combine planar transducers with microfluidics to achieve in-flow biofunctionalization and assay were analyzed here regarding surface binding capacity, immobilization stability, binding stoichiometry, and amount and orientation of surface-bound IgG antibodies. Two IgG immobilization schemes, by physical adsorption [3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)] and glutaraldehyde covalent coupling (APTES/GA), followed by blocking with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and streptavidin (STR) capture, are monitored with white light reflectance spectroscopy (WLRS) sensors as thickness of the adlayer formed on top of aminosilanized silicon chips. Multi-protein surface composition (IgG, BSA, and STR) is determined by time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) combined with principal component analysis (applying barycentric coordinates to the score plot).
