Drug repurposing is preferred over de-novo drug discovery to unveil the therapeutic applications of existing drug candidates before investing considerable resources in unexplored novel chemical entities. This study demonstrated multifaceted stratagems to reconnoiter promising repurposable candidates against Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) by amalgamating Real-World-Data (RWD) with bioinformatics algorithms corroborated with and studies. At the outset, the RWD from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) was explored to navigate signals to retrieve repurposable drugs that are inversely associated with HCC via Disproportionality Analysis.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are a versatile class of carbon-based nanomaterial frameworks that have previously been used as a diagnostic device, in sensing for environmental applications, in bioimaging, and for drug delivery systems. Their versatility stems from their ability to be chemically tailored functionalization to optimize properties for specific applications. In this study, we have synthesized lactic acid-derived nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (LAdN-CQDs) and examined their ability to intervene in the conversion of soluble, monomeric hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) into mature fibrils.

We present a method for predicting hyperchaotic time series using a complex network-based forecasting model. We first construct a network from a given time series, which serves as a coarse-grained representation of the underlying attractor. This network facilitates multistep forecasting by capturing the local nonlinearity of the dynamics and offers superior accuracy over more extended periods than traditional methods.

Chronic wounds are characterised by an imbalance between pro and anti-inflammatory signals, which result in permanent inflammation and delayed re-epithelialization, consequently hindering wound healing. They are associated with bacterial infections, tissue hypoxia, local ischemia, reduced vascularization and MMP-9 upregulation. The global prevalence of chronic wounds has been estimated at 40 million in the adult population, with an alarming annual growth rate of 6.

The technical feasibility of advanced oxidation process, in particular persulfate (PS) oxidation followed by struvite precipitation for landfill leachate treatment and nutrient recovery has been depicted in the current study. Furthermore, the impact of activation of PS with thermal and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation techniques on COD removal efficiency is also investigated. A maximum COD removal efficiency of 96% is accomplished at 65 °C together with supply of UV irradiation.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2024

Center for Global Health Research, Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Saveetha University, Thandalam, Chennai 602105, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address:

This study investigated the effectiveness of a pectin-nano zero-valent iron-based nanocomposite in adsorbing heavy metals in bimetallic form (chromium‑lead mixture), along with assessing its antibacterial properties. The nanocomposite was synthesized using a straightforward dispersion method, employing eco-friendly components like biocompatible pectin sourced from banana peels and nano-scale zero-valent iron. Analytical characterization confirmed the formation of stable, nano-crystalline particles with active interactions between the functional groups of pectin and nano iron.

The soluble-to-toxic transformation of intrinsically disordered amyloidogenic proteins such as amyloid beta (Aβ), α-synuclein, mutant Huntingtin Protein (mHTT) and islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) among others are associated with disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), respectively. The dissolution of mature fibrils and toxic amyloidogenic intermediates, including oligomers, continues to be the pinnacle in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Yet, methods to effectively and quantitatively report on the interconversion between amyloid monomers, oligomers and mature fibrils fall short.
