Purpose: Enrolling traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with an inability to provide informed consent in research is challenging. Alternatives to patient consent are not sufficiently embedded in European and national legislation, which allows procedural variation and bias. We aimed to quantify variations in informed consent policy and practice.

Purpose: The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and chronic hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is still challenging, especially in patients asymptomatic or with non-classical phenotypes and for physicians not skilled in calcium-phosphorous (Ca-P) disorders. The serum calcium/phosphorous (Ca/P) ratio has been proposed as accurate index to identify PHPT, while it has never been tested in HypoPT. The aim of this study is to investigate the diagnostic power of the serum Ca/P ratio in the diagnosis of primary parathyroid dysfunctions (both PHPT and HypoPT) in a large series of data.

Predictive energy equations for spinal muscular atrophy type I children.

Am J Clin Nutr

May 2020

International Center for the Assessment of Nutritional Status (ICANS), Department of Food Environmental and Nutritional Sciences (DeFENS), University of Milan, Milan, Italy.

Background: Knowledge on resting energy expenditure (REE) in spinal muscular atrophy type I (SMAI) is still limited. The lack of a population-specific REE equation has led to poor nutritional support and impairment of nutritional status.

Objective: To identify the best predictors of measured REE (mREE) among simple bedside parameters, to include these predictors in population-specific equations, and to compare such models with the common predictive equations.

Outcomes of patients with continuous flow left ventricular assist device undergoing emergency endovascular treatment for atraumatic bleeding.

CVIR Endovasc

December 2019

Department of Cardio-Thoracic Vascular Sciences and Public Health, Cardiac Surgery, Via Giustiniani 2, 35128, Padova, Italy.

Introduction: Severe spontaneous bleeding is a significant complication in patients with continuous flow left ventricular assist devices; there is little evidence on endovascular treatment to support its use.

Materials And Methods: We observed seven patients (five men, two women, age 43-67 years) with continuous flow left ventricular assist devices on antiaggregant/coagulant therapy, admitted to our hospital for uncorrectable symptomatic anemia; CT-angiography and diagnostic angiography confirmed the presence of atraumatic arterious bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract (six patients), from the intercostal artery and from the bronchial tree (one patient).

Results: All patients where successfully treated via an endovascular approach with superselective embolization of the involved arterial branches with coils and particles.

The closure of wounds associated with soft tissue defects is surgically challenging, frequently requiring extensive plastic surgery and free flaps. The combination of ADM and STSG is an innovative method used to cover such wounds. The human-derived ADMs (H-ADMs) are the most described in the literature but according to European legislations, Companies H-ADMs outside the EC are not allowed to commercialize them in Europe, H-ADMs being "human products" and not "medical devices", so being ruled by European legislations on transplants.

Timing of Low-Dose Aspirin Discontinuation and the Influence on Clinical Outcome of Patients Undergoing Surgery for Chronic Subdural Hematoma.

World Neurosurg

September 2019

Neurosurgery Division, Department of Morphology, Surgery, and Experimental Medicine, Ferrara University, Hospital S. Anna, Ferrara, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigates the effects of the timing of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) discontinuation on surgical outcomes in patients undergoing urgent surgery for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH).
  • The research involves a retrospective analysis of 164 patients classified into three groups based on when surgery took place after ASA was stopped: immediately, within 5 days, or after 5 days.
  • Results indicate that the timing of ASA discontinuation does not significantly affect surgical outcomes, complications, or mortality rates for patients with CSDH.
