Background And Objective: Bone fragility has been linked to COVID-19 severity. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a diagnosis of vertebral fracture (VF) increased mortality risk in COVID-19 patients and whether this effect was greater than in those without COVID-19.

Methods: We assessed VFs by computed tomography (CT) in a cohort of 501 patients consecutively admitted to the emergency department (ED) for clinical suspicion of SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first wave of pandemic emergency.

Growth patterns in children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder characterized by muscle atrophy and weakness. SMA type 1 (SMA1) is the most severe form: affected infants are unable to sit unaided; SMA type 2 (SMA2) children can sit, but are not able to walk independently. The Standards of Care has improved quality of life and the increasing availability of disease-modifying treatments is progressively changing the natural history; so, the clinical assessment of nutritional status has become even more crucial.

Use of the SpineJack direct reduction for treating type A2, A3 and A4 fractures of the thoracolumbar spine: a retrospective case series.

Background: Compression injuries of the thoracolumbar spine without neurological impairment are usually treated with minimally invasive procedures. Intravertebral expandable implants represent an alternative strategy in fractures with low fragments' displacement.

Methods: Patients with A2, A3 and A4 fractures of the T10-L2 spinal segment without neurological impairment, fracture gap >2 mm, vertebra plana, pedicle rupture, pedicle diameter <6 mm, spinal canal encroachment ≥50%, and vertebral body spread >30% were treated with the SpineJack device.

Objectives: Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) is a promising tool for objective assessment of interstitial lung disease (ILD) related to connective tissue diseases (CTD). However, its validity was never investigated. The aim of this study was to assess QCT feasibility, face, and content validity evaluation concerning CTD-ILD.

Surgical treatment of metastatic pheochromocytomas of the spine: a systematic review.

Metastatic pheochromocytoma of the spine (MPS) represents an extremely rare and challenging entity. While retrospective studies and case series make the body of the current literature and case reports, no systematic reviews have been conducted so far. This systematic review aims to perform a systematic review of the literature on this topic to clarify the status of the art regarding the surgical management of MPS.

COVID-19 incidence and mortality in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients.

Many studies reported a higher risk of COVID-19 disease among patients on dialysis or with kidney transplantation, and the poor outcome of COVID-19 in these patients. Patients in conservative management for chronic kidney disease (CKD) have received attention only recently, therefore less is known about how COVID-19 affects this population. The aim of this study was to provide evidence on COVID-19 incidence and mortality in CKD patients followed up in an integrated healthcare program and in the population living in the same catchment area.

Molecular Alterations in Gastric Preneoplastic Lesions and Early Gastric Cancer.

Prognosis of gastric cancer is dramatically improved by early diagnosis. Correa's cascade correlates the expression of some molecular markers with the progression of preneoplastic lesions toward carcinoma. This article reviews the diagnostic and prognostic values of molecular markers in complete () and incomplete (, and ) intestinal metaplasia, gastric dysplasia/intra-epithelial neoplasia, and early gastric cancer.

Lung ultrasound guided pulmonary recruitment during mechanical ventilation in neonates: A case series.

Background: Recently, the first report of lung ultrasound (LUS) guided recruitment during open lung ventilation in neonates has been published. LUS guided recruitment can change the approach to open lung ventilation, which is currently performed without any measure of lung function/lung expansion in the neonatal population.

Methods: We included all the newborn infants that underwent a LUS-guided recruitment maneuver during mechanical ventilation as a rescue attempt for an extremely severe respiratory condition with oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (SpO2/FIO2) ratio below 130 or the inability to wean off mechanical ventilation.

The prognostic impact of BIA-derived fat-free mass index in patients with cancer.

Background & Aims: Reduced muscle mass represents one of the top ranked phenotypic criteria for malnutrition proposed by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition. Although height-indexed fat-free mass (FFMI) thresholds have been proposed as useful surrogate measures of reduced muscle mass, the independent prognostic value of BIA-derived FFMI by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) in patients with cancer still needs to be fully explored.

Methods: Data on body mass index (BMI), 6-month percentage of weight loss (%WL), FFMI by BIA and quality of life (QoL by EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire [EORTC QLQ-C30]) of Italian and German patients observed prospectively until death or censoring were used (N = 1217).

EUS-guided drainage using lumen apposing metal stent and percutaneous endoscopic necrosectomy as dual approach for the management of complex walled-off necrosis: a case report and a review of the literature.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage is suggested as the first approach in the management of symptomatic and complex walled-off pancreatic necrosis. Dual approach with percutaneous drainage could be the best choice when the necrosis is deep extended till the pelvic paracolic gutter; however, the available catheter could not be large enough to drain solid necrosis neither to perform necrosectomy, entailing a higher need for surgery. Therefore, percutaneous endoscopic necrosectomy through a large bore percutaneous self-expandable metal stent has been proposed.

Vermian subtentorial arteriovenous malformation supplied by the artery of Wollschlaeger and Wollschlaeger.

Background: The artery of Wollschlaeger and Wollschlaeger is a tentorial branch of the superior cerebellar artery: due to its small diameter, it is not usually seen in normal angiograms except when enlarged in the setting of a dural AVF or tentorial meningioma. Its presence has been rarely described in the Literature.

Case Report: herein we describe the first ever reported case of a vermian subtentorial arteriovenous malformation supplied by the artery of Wollschlaeger and Wollschlaeger in 70 year old female patient.

Quality of life of COVID-19 critically ill survivors after ICU discharge: 90 days follow-up.

Purpose: The onset of the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic in Italy induced a dramatic increase in the need for intensive care unit (ICU) beds for a large proportion of patients affected by COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The aim of the present study was to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at 90 days after ICU discharge in a cohort of COVID-19 patients undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation and to compare it with an age and sex-matched sample from the general Italian and Finnish populations. Moreover, the possible associations between clinical, demographic, social factors, and HRQoL were investigated.

Sustained oxygenation improvement after first prone positioning is associated with liberation from mechanical ventilation and mortality in critically ill COVID-19 patients: a cohort study.

Background: Prone positioning (PP) has been used to improve oxygenation in patients affected by the SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19). Several mechanisms, including lung recruitment and better lung ventilation/perfusion matching, make a relevant rational for using PP. However, not all patients maintain the oxygenation improvement after returning to supine position.

Long-term follow-up of the Derivo® Embolization Device (DED®) for intracranial aneurysms: the Italian Multicentric Registry.

Background: The flow-diverter devices (FDDs) safety and effectiveness have been demonstrated by large series and meta-analyses. Due to the high occlusion rates and the acceptable morbidity rates of FDDs, the indications for their use are continuously expanding. We presented our Italian multicentric experience using the second generation of DERIVO® Embolization Device (DED; Acandis, Pforzheim, Germany) to cure cerebral aneurysms, evaluating both middle and long-term safety and efficacy of this device.

De Novo Dural Arteriovenous Fistula on Draining Veins of Previously Treated Pial Arteriovenous Malformation: a Case Report.

A 71-year-old man, with a pial micro-arteriovenous malformation (pAVM) draining into the confluence of the vein of Trolard and the vein of Labbé was surgically removed, sparing these cortical veins. 4-months MR and angiographic controls showed a de novo dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) draining into the previously spared cortical veins. It was removed using intraoperative motor evoked potentials (MEP).

The Role of Endothelial Dysfunction in the Pathophysiology and Cerebrovascular Effects of Migraine: A Narrative Review.

Background And Purpose: Migraine is a complex neurovascular disorder whose triggers are not entirely understood. Endothelial dysfunction might play a role in migraine, and there have been numerous reports on endothelium dysfunction and migraine pathophysiology, but their reciprocal cause-effect relationship remains unclear. This review reports the current evidence on endothelium dysfunction, its link with migraine, and its possible consequences for cerebral hemodynamics.

Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) Version 03.01 in Italian.

Objective: The aim of the present study is to validate the Acoustic Voice Quality Index version 03.01 in the Italian language (AVQIv3-IT).

Methods: A total of 150 native Italian speakers with normal voices (n = 50) and with various voice disorders (n = 100) were enrolled.

Predictive fat mass equations for spinal muscular atrophy type I children: Development and internal validation.

Background: Body composition assessment is paramount for spinal muscular atrophy type I (SMA I) patients, as weight and BMI have proven to be misleading for these patients. Despite its importance, no disease-specific field method is currently available, and the assessment of body composition of SMA I patients requires reference methods available only in specialized settings.

Objective: To develop predictive fat mass equations for SMA I children based on simple measurements, and compare existing equations to the new disease-specific equations.

Covid-19 Interstitial Pneumonia: Histological and Immunohistochemical Features on Cryobiopsies.

Background: The pathogenetic steps leading to Covid-19 interstitial pneumonia remain to be clarified. Most postmortem studies to date reveal diffuse alveolar damage as the most relevant histologic pattern. Antemortem lung biopsy may however provide more precise data regarding the earlier stages of the disease, providing a basis for novel treatment approaches.

Influence of nutritional status on the clinical outcome of patients with chronic subdural hematoma: a prospective multicenter clinical study.

Background: Elderly patients present a higher risk of developing chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs) together with increased risk of malnutrition. The nutritional status may affect outcomes, response to treatments, and prognosis. Influence on other kinds of diseases was investigated showing an increased risk of mortality, morbidity, and adverse outcomes.
