A novel heterogeneous catalyst comprising undecamolybdophosphate and hydrous zirconia was synthesized, characterized by various physicochemical techniques and used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for oxidation of styrene using H(2)O(2) as an oxidant. The novelty of the present work lies in obtaining >99% conversion of styrene with >99% selectivity for benzaldehyde under solvent free mild reaction conditions.

A great deal of effort has been made over the years to develop liposomes that have targeting vectors (oligosaccharides, peptides, proteins and vitamins) attached to the bilayer surface. Most studies have focused on antibody conjugates since procedures for producing highly specific monoclonal antibodies are well established. Antibody conjugated liposomes have recently attracted a great deal of interest, principally because of their potential use as targeted drug delivery systems and in diagnostic applications.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for human morbidity and mortality through its effects on target organs like heart, brain and kidneys. More intensive treatment for the effective control of blood pressure significantly reduces the morbidity and mortality. The renin angiotensin system (RAS) is a coordinated hormonal cascade of major clinical importance in the regulation of blood pressure.

Dietary exposure to cadmium, even at lower doses, can lead to free radical induced neurotoxicity, neurobehavioral changes and alteration in neurotransmitters. Such changes are likely to be more pronounced in the developing brain due to incompleteness of blood brain barrier (BBB). Hippocampus being the seat of intelligence has a role in learning and cognitive behavior and any damage to hippocampus during developmental stage is likely to result in neurodegenerative changes in later life.

Hydrophobic nanoparticles and nanocomposite films of 1,4-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI)-modified starch nanoparticles (SNPs) have been synthesized at ambient temperatures. The platelet-like starch nanocrystals become pseudospherical after modification with HMDI and the size increases or decreases depending on diisocyanate concentration compared to the ungrafted particles as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The obtained nanocrystals were characterized by means of the FT-IR and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques.

Context: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has become one of the major health burdens worldwide. To date, no single pharmacological agent has been developed to correct metabolic abnormalities associated with MetS. Use of indigenous medicinal plants as alternative medicines against MetS could be beneficial due to multiple therapeutic usage, easy availability, and relatively few side effects.

Diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, and associated with long-term damage and dysfunction of various organs. Management of diabetes is therefore vital and involves maintaining euglycemia as much as possible by reducing blood glucose and by increasing insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose uptake. Ayurveda has promoted the management of diabetes by regulating carbohydrate metabolism using several medicinal herbs, one of which is Gymnema sylvestre (GS).

G-quadruplex structures of DNA represent a potentially useful target for anticancer drugs. Telomerase enzyme, involved in immortalization of cancer cells is inhibited by stabilization of G-quadruplex at the ends of chromosomes. Anthraquinone and acridone derivatives are promising G-quadruplex ligands as telomerase inhibitors.

Methotrexate (MTX) is indicated in the symptomatic control of severe, recalcitrant, and disabling psoriasis. The oral or parenteral route of administration causes systemic toxicity. The topical route of delivery, though, reduces systemic toxicity and has limited applicability due to restricted permeability.

The degradation behavior of cefixime trihydrate was investigated under different stress conditions of acidic hydrolysis, alkaline hydrolysis and oxidation using spectrophotometry. Stability indicating spectrophotometric methods were developed that could separate the drug from its degradation products formed under these stress conditions. The UV spectral characteristics of the drug and degraded products were quite different and zero and first order derivative ultraviolet spectrophotometric methods were used to study the extent of degradation.

The Oryza sativa constitutive disease resistance 1 (OsCDR1) gene product is an aspartic proteinase that has been implicated in disease resistance signaling. This apoplastic enzyme is a member of the group of 'atypical' plant aspartic proteinases. Recombinant OsCDR1 expressed in Escherichia coli exhibited protease activity against succinylated-casein substrate.

Effect of the metabolic load caused by the presence of plasmids on mineral phosphate-solubilizing (MPS) Enterobacter asburiae PSI3, was monitored with four plasmid cloning vectors and one native plasmid, varying in size, nature of the replicon, copy number and antibiotic resistance genes. Except for one plasmid, the presence of all other plasmids in E. asburiae PSI3 resulted in the loss of the MPS phenotype as reflected by the failure to bring about a drop in pH and release soluble P when grown in media containing rock phosphate (RP) as the sole P source.
