Background: While various treatment modalities exist, penile prosthesis (PP) implantation offers a permanent solution for patients that do not respond to or are not suitable for other treatment options for erectile dysfunction.

Aim: The aim of this study was to establish stretched penile length before surgery as a reliable determining factor of penile length after penile implant surgery.

Methods: For this study, data on penile length before and after PP surgery from three European centers was analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • Penile prosthesis (PP) is a key treatment for Peyronie's disease (PD) in patients with refractory erectile dysfunction (ED), but this study evaluates its use in PD patients without ED.
  • A total of 636 patients had PP for PD from 2012 to 2022, with 168 included in the study, showing that the mean age was 56.3 years and curvature angles were similar between those with and without ED.
  • Results indicated high satisfaction rates (around 88%) for both groups post-surgery, and fewer mechanical failures in the no-ED group; thus, PP may be a safe and effective option for PD treatment, but more research is needed.

Article Synopsis
  • Cell therapy (CT) is being researched as a potential treatment for male sexual dysfunction (MSD), prompting a systematic review to assess its effectiveness and formulate official guidelines for the European Society for Sexual Medicine.
  • A comprehensive search of medical databases identified 19 relevant studies involving 421 male patients, focusing mainly on erectile dysfunction, with most studies being case series rather than robust randomized controlled trials.
  • Results showed significant improvements in erectile function based on various scales, with positive changes documented in over 70% of studies; some research also indicated benefits for patients with Peyronie's disease, highlighting the need for further investigation and validation of CT in this area.

: The relationship between male infertility (MI) and testicular cancer (TC) is bilateral. On one hand, it is well-established that patients diagnosed with TC have a high risk of pre- and post-treatment infertility. On the other hand, the risk of developing TC in male infertile patients is not clearly defined.

Conservative and medical treatments are considered the first step in ischemic priapism (IP) management, although there is no clear evidence regarding their efficacy. We conducted a systematic review on behalf of the EAU Guidelines panel on Sexual and Reproductive health to analyse the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of conservative and medical treatment for non-sickle cell disease-related IP. Databases searched for relevant literature investigating efficacy and safety of conservative measures and medical treatment for IP included Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries and clinicaltrial.

Targeted therapy (TT) for prostate cancer (PCa) aims to ablate the malignant lesion with an adequate margin of safety in order to obtain similar oncological outcomes, but with less toxicity than radical treatments. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the recurrence rate (RR) in patients with primary localized PCa undergoing mpMRI/US fusion targeted cryotherapy (FTC). A secondary objective was to evaluate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) as a predictor of recurrences.

Penile Implant Surgery Satisfaction Assessment.

J Sex Med

May 2021

Department of Urology, Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda University Hospital, Madrid, Spain; Lyx Institute of Urology, Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, Madrid, Spain.

Background: Several studies reported high satisfaction rates (> 90%) for patients and their partners after penile prosthesis (PP) implantation.

Literature concerning corporotomy location in multicomponent inflatable penile prosthetic surgery via a penoscrotal approach is scarce if not nonexistent. Aim of our study was to report practices in low-, moderate-, and high-volume penile implant centers regarding corporotomy location and evaluate its potential impact on intraoperative and short-term postoperative complications. Data from 18 (13 European and 5 American) implant centers were collected retrospectively between September 1st, 2018 and August 31st, 2019.

Imaging has a central role in the context of focal therapy (FT) for prostate cancer (PCa). Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) is a novel imaging modality that combines the morpho-functional information of MRI with the molecular characterization of PET Some papers reported the potential advantages of PSMA PET/MRI in different clinical scenarios. Limited evidence on PSMA PET/MRI is available in the setting of FT.

Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is) are the first-line therapeutic option for erectile dysfunction (ED), while second-line therapy includes the alprostadil. Due to the different pharmacodynamic mechanism of PDE5Is and alprostadil, a synergistic action is conceivable when they are administered in combination. The aim of present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of combination therapy with PDE5I and topical alprostadil in patients with ED non-responders to PDE5I alone.

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Although the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer has improved substantially in recent years, new molecular biomarkers are needed to further prolong survival and improve the quality of life in these patients.

Areas Covered: This review analyzes the current evidence for prognostic and predictive molecular biomarkers that can be applied across different clinical scenarios, ranging from localized disease to metastatic castration-resistant PCa, with a particular emphasis on the biomarkers likely to become available in routine clinical practice in the near future.

There is clinically relevant molecular heterogeneity in prostate cancer (PCa), but this biological diversity has had only a minimal impact on clinical practice. Treatment outcomes in patients with localised PCa are often highly variable, even among patients stratified to the same risk group or disease state based on standard clinical and pathological parameters. In recent years, the development of gene panels has provided valuable data on the differential expression of genes in patients with PCa.
