New-onset systemic vasculitis following SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination: the trigger, phenotype, and outcome.

Clin Rheumatol

October 2023

Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, India, 751024.

The global health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelmed the capacity of healthcare systems to cope with the rapidly spreading infection and its associated complications. Among these complications, autoimmune phenomena such as systemic vasculitis emerged as a significant challenge. Both the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the vaccines developed to combat it appeared to induce clinical manifestations resembling various types of systemic vasculitis, affecting large, medium, and small vessels.

Background: Currently very little is known about the impact of anti-reflux surgery on extra-esophageal manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when compared with the typical symptoms of reflux. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical effect of total (360°) and partial (270°) laparoscopic fundoplication on extraesophageal GERD symptoms.

Methods: One hundred and twenty patients with documented extraesophageal GERD symptoms were randomized to either undergo floppy Nissen (n= 60) or Toupet fundoplication (n= 60).

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease caused by many polyclonal autoantibodies and characterized by numerous comorbid lesions of internal organs and systems. Research with respect to the role of various infectious agents in the development and course of SLE, and primarily the role of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is ongoing. It is important to find out whether patients with SLE are infected with CMV and EBV, since the clinical manifestations of SLE and active viral infection are similar.

Рatients with diabetes have more complications and higher mortality from COVID-19. This is due to the fact that diabetes impairs the immune response. Hyperglycemia causes a violation of the immune response, which in turn cannot control the spread of pathogenic microorganisms and therefore patients with diabetes are more susceptible to infections.

Cardiovascular issues in rheumatic diseases.

Clin Rheumatol

October 2023

Departments of Rheumatology and Research and Development, Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust (Teaching Trust of the University of Birmingham, UK), Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, UK.

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in rheumatic diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Timely detection and monitoring of cardiovascular affections by advanced visualization techniques may improve outcomes across most rheumatic diseases. Although high-grade inflammation and (auto)immune pathways are well known for their negative effects on the heart and vasculature, cardiovascular risk estimation remains one of the unresolved critical issues in rheumatic diseases.

Biomarkers of nitrosative stress in exhaled breath condensate and serum among patients with cystic fibrosis.

Adv Med Sci

September 2023

Institute of Medical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences, University of Rzeszów, Rzeszów, Poland; Department of Allergology and Cystic Fibrosis, State Hospital 2 in Rzeszow, Rzeszów, Poland.

Purpose: The measurement of biomarkers in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) offers a non-invasive way to assess airway disease and can be easily done in a clinical setting among patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The role of oxidative and nitrosative stress in the complex pathophysiology of CF is widely accepted and biomarkers of oxidative and nitrosative stress can be measured in the serum and EBC. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess markers of nitrosative stress in EBC and serum, collected simultaneously from the CF patients.

Three new 5-dimethylaminomethylidene-4-phenylamino-1,3-thiazol-2(5H)-ones with an hydroxyl group in the ortho, meta and para positions on the phenyl ring were synthesized in order to deduce the structural changes occurring on prototropic tautomerism of the amidine system. The existence of all the title compounds solely in the amino tautomeric form has been established in the solid and liquid (dimethyl sulfoxide solution) phases. The title compounds are analyzed from the point of view of the electronic effects and conformational freedom of their molecules.

Article Synopsis
  • High rates of recurrent acute obstructive bronchitis in children highlight the need for better treatment and prevention strategies, as identifying those at risk for asthma is currently limited.
  • A study involving 59 children with recurrent bronchitis and a comparison group of 30 showed that treatment with recombinant interferon alpha-2β improved cytokine levels, indicating a better immune response.
  • The findings suggest that cytokine imbalances in these children can be corrected with this therapy, which may provide a more effective approach to managing recurrent bronchial issues.
