The amount of unfolded proteins is increased in cancer cells, leading to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Therefore, cancer cells are sensitive to drugs capable of further enhancing ER stress. Examples of such drugs include the clinically approved proteosome inhibitors bortezomib and carfilzomib.

Rheumatol Int

December 2023

Department of Biology and Biochemistry, South Kazakhstan Medical Academy, Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

New pathophysiological insights are now available on comorbidities in rheumatic diseases (RDs). Several nationwide studies point to the fact that comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of adverse outcomes in patients with various RDs. Genetic factors, intensity of systemic inflammation, anti-inflammatory potential of therapeutic agents, and duration of RDs have been insufficiently explored in the context of comorbidities.

European consensus statement on expert colposcopy.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

November 2023

Aberdeen Centre for Women's Health Research (ACWHR), University of Aberdeen, UK.

Background: Following the publication of the European consensus statement on standards for essential colposcopy in 2020, the need for standards relating to more complex and challenging colposcopy practice was recognised. These standards relate to colposcopy undertaken in patients identified through cervical screening and tertiary referrals from colposcopists who undertake standard colposcopy only. This set of recommendations provides a review of the current literature and agreement on care for recognised complex cases.

Introduction Somatoform disorders (SFDs) are a spectrum of diseases mainly manifesting with physical symptoms of no recognizable etiology. These disorders are believed to be primarily influenced and exacerbated by psychological factors. Given the connection between parental sociodemographics and psychological factors and SFDs, there is a pressing need to investigate this area further, particularly concerning parents and their children affected by somatoform disorders.

Background: Around 60%-80% of the population suffers from back pain, making it one of the most common health complaints. Transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic discectomy (TPED) is an effective treatment for low back pain that can be performed using different anaesthesia techniques. Our primary objective was to test the hypothesis that bilateral Erector spinae plane block (ESP) plus sedation is equally effective as traditional local infiltration anaesthesia plus sedation in TPED.

The hybrid heterocyclic molecules are perspective materials in the development of anticancer drugs. Here, the pyrrolidinedione-thiazolidinone hybrid molecules were designed as potent anticancer agents. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic effect of three derivatives 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-, 1-(4-chlorophenyl)- and 1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-[5-[2-chloro-3-(4-nitrophenyl)prop-2-enylidene]-4-oxo-2-thioxothiazolidine-3-yl]pyrrolidine-2,5-diones (Les-6287, Les-6294, and Les-6328, respectively), their effect on the production of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), apoptosis induction, and expression of genes - PPARγ, AHR, and NRFL2 - whose products are important in metabolism in human tongue squamous cell carcinoma cells of SCC-15 line.

Triceps tendon avulsion is a rare but debilitating condition and the least frequent of all tendon injuries, but it is receiving increasing attention in the literature. The most common mechanism of injury is resisted extension, which is typically seen in a fall onto an extended hand. Such injuries are easily overlooked and should be considered a differential diagnosis in all patients who describe pain and swelling at the posterior aspect of the elbow following a traumatic event.

Medicinal Plant-derived Phytochemicals in Detoxification.

Curr Pharm Des

June 2024

Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement Sciences, University of Verona, Verona, Italy.

The average worldwide human life expectancy is 70 years, with a significantly higher value in Western societies. Many modern diseases are not associated with premature mortality but with a decreased quality of life in aged patients and an excessive accumulation of various toxic compounds in the human body during life. Today, scientists are especially interested in finding compounds that can help increase a healthy lifespan by detoxifying the body.

The paper aimed to prepare quaternary chitosan-based nanofibers as bioabsorbable wound dressings. To this aim, fully biodegradable chitosan/N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC) nanofibers were designed and prepared via electrospinning, using poly(ethylene glycol) as sacrificial additive. The new biomaterials were structurally and morphologically characterized by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, and their properties required for wound dressings application were investigated and discussed in detail.

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Drive Dacryolithiasis.

Cells

July 2023

Department of Internal Medicine 3-Rheumatology and Immunology, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), 91054 Erlangen, Germany.

Mucopeptide concretions, previously called dacryoliths, are macroscopic stones that commonly obstruct the lacrimal sac. The mechanism behind dacryolithiasis remains unclear; however, the involvement of various immune cells, including neutrophils, has been confirmed. These findings remain limited, and no information on neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), essentially involved in the pathogenesis of other lithiases, is available yet.

Background: Actinomycetes Streptomyces davaonensis and Streptomyces cinnabarinus synthesize a promising broad-spectrum antibiotic roseoflavin, with its synthesis starting from flavin mononucleotide and proceeding through an immediate precursor, aminoriboflavin, that also has antibiotic properties. Roseoflavin accumulation by the natural producers is rather low, whereas aminoriboflavin accumulation is negligible. Yeasts have many advantages as biotechnological producers relative to bacteria, however, no recombinant producers of bacterial antibiotics in yeasts are known.
