October 2024

Environment Assessment and Management Research Centre, University of Liverpool, 74 Bedford Street South, Liverpool, L697ZQ, UK.

Background: This article reports on research commissioned by (what was at the time) Public Health England (PHE). The objective is to reflect on the normative effectiveness of Health Impact Assessment (HIA) applied to two planning projects; (a) the new town at Cranbrook, Devon (HIA prepared in 2007), and (b) the regeneration of the Marsh farm area in Luton (HIA prepared in 2009). In this context, the focus is on the contribution of HIA to actions that are intended to lead to good or improved health and wellbeing.

Ther Adv Vaccines Immunother

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Complutense University of Madrid, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Madrid, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common blood cancer in adults, but immunotherapy for MM has not been effective until recently.
  • Recent studies on immune checkpoint inhibitors have shown that they often cause severe side effects or have low effectiveness, particularly in patients with advanced MM.
  • The review discusses five inhibitory molecules involved in the immune response to MM and explores their roles in the tumor microenvironment and recent clinical trials involving these potential therapeutic targets.

Article Synopsis
  • Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is typically treated with either metformin or insulin, but their effects on children's heart and metabolic health are not well understood.
  • The study aimed to compare the cardiometabolic outcomes in children of mothers treated with these two medications through a systematic review of randomized control trials published between 1974 and 2024.
  • Results showed that children whose mothers used metformin had better body composition and lower fasting glucose and triglyceride levels, but overall, most cardiometabolic outcomes did not differ significantly, indicating a need for further research with longer follow-ups and diverse populations.*

Biomarkers of type 2 and non-type 2 inflammation in asthma exacerbations.

Cent Eur J Immunol

July 2024

Department of Medicine, Microbiology/Immunology, College of Medicine, University of Sulaimani, Iraq.

Introduction: In adult-onset asthma, two major endotypes have been proposed: T2 with eosinophilia and non-T2 characterised by neutrophils and interleukin (IL)-17. The objective of the study was to examine the endotype marker profile in patients with severe asthma who were hospitalized for exacerbations, with a focus on differentiating between viral and non-viral triggers.

Material And Methods: Forty-nine patients with asthma, admitted for exacerbations, and 51 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited.

Revealing the Interlayer Interaction Forces in 2D Graphene Materials by Graphene-Wrapped Nanoprobe.

Langmuir

October 2024

International Research Centre for Nano Handling and Manufacturing of China, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun 130022, China.

Understanding the interlayer interaction between 2D layered structures is critical for the construction of various micro- and nanoscale functional devices. However, both the normal and the tangential interlayer interactions between 2D layered materials have rarely been studied simultaneously. In this work, an immersion and lift-up method is proposed to wrap a layer of graphene flakes onto a plasma-pretreated atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoprobe for the measurements of interaction forces by AFM.

Maternal social deprivation and preterm birth: The PreCARE cohort study.

Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol

September 2024

Obstetrical Perinatal and Pediatric Epidemiology Research Team (EPOPé), Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Statistics (CRESS), Inserm, INRAE, Université Paris Cité, Paris, France.

Background: Maternal exposure to unfavourable social conditions is associated with a higher rate of perinatal complications, such as placental vascular pathologies. A higher risk of preterm birth (PTB) has also been reported, and variations across studies and settings suggest that different patterns may be involved in this association.

Objective: To assess the association between maternal social deprivation and PTB (overall and by phenotype).

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 138 patients with contact lens-related bacterial keratitis (CLBK) over a 7-year period to understand their demographics, CL wear behavior, and treatment outcomes.
  • The majority of cases were linked to soft contact lenses, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus spp. being the most common bacteria found; poor hygiene was a significant factor in over half the cases.
  • Most patients responded well to topical antibiotics, achieving good visual acuity, although older age, female gender, and larger infection size were associated with poorer healing outcomes.

Liver cells are the basic functional unit of the liver. However, repeated or sustained injury leads to structural disorders of liver lobules, proliferation of fibrous tissue and changes in structure, thus increasing scar tissue. Cellular fibrosis affects tissue stiffness, shear force, and other cellular mechanical forces.
