Direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) are increasingly common, with bleeding events associated with elevated plasma concentrations. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), a point-of-care tool for assessing secondary hemostasis, has demonstrated a correlation with increasing concentrations of DOAC. However, previous studies have only partially explored this relationship.

Protein aggregation is a key process in the development of many neurodegenerative disorders, including dementias such as Alzheimer's disease. Significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular mechanisms of aggregate formation in pure buffer systems, much of which was enabled by the development of integrated rate laws that allowed for mechanistic analysis of aggregation kinetics. However, in order to translate these findings into disease-relevant conclusions and to make predictions about the effect of potential alterations to the aggregation reactions by the addition of putative inhibitors, the current models need to be extended to account for the altered situation encountered in living systems.

Pediatric palliative care in Sweden.

Curr Probl Pediatr Adolesc Health Care

January 2024

Marie Cederschiöld University, Sweden; University College, London, UK.

In Sweden, the governance of healthcare is decentralized, so PC is provided with regional or local differences in organization, level of competence, and recourses. Ongoing regional and national initiative to increase quality of pediatric palliative care in Sweden aligns with the international standard of pediatric palliative care as a care directed towards all children with life-threatening or life-limiting illness or conditions from the time of diagnosis. Examples of such initiatives and of different care-services providing pediatric palliative care will be presented.

Background High and low birth weight are independently associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk in adulthood. Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), the age-related clonal expansion of hematopoietic cells with preleukemic somatic mutations, predicts incident cardiovascular disease independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Whether birth weight predicts development of CHIP later in life is unknown.

Background: The use of viscoelastic tests is becoming increasingly popular. There is a paucity of validation of the reproducibility of varying coagulation states. Therefore, we aimed to study the coefficient of variation (CV) for the ROTEM EXTEM parameters clotting time (CT), clot formation time (CFT), alpha-angle and maximum clot firmness (MCF) in blood with varying degrees of coagulation strength.

Selective oxidation reactions represent a challenging task for conventional organic chemistry. Whole-cell biocatalysis provides a very convenient, easy to apply method to carry out different selective oxidation reactions including chemo-, regio-, and enantio-selective reactions. species are important biocatalysts as they can catalyze these selective reactions very efficiently owing to the wide diversity of enzymes and enzymatic cascades in their cell niche.

Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden; Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry, Institute of Physiology and Neuroscience, University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden; Dementia Research Centre, Institute of Neurology, University College London, London, UK; Department of Clinical Physiology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. Electronic address:

Automatic methods for feature extraction, volumetry, and morphometric analysis in clinical neuroscience typically operate on images obtained with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging equipment. Although CT scans are less expensive to acquire and more widely available than MR scans, their application is currently limited to the visual assessment of brain integrity and the exclusion of co-pathologies. CT has rarely been used for tissue classification because the contrast between grey matter and white matter was considered insufficient.

Universal Design (UD) is usually stated to be "for all ages and abilities". Given that stroke is a major source of disability, it is important that UD recommendations take stroke-specific problems into account. Within the framework of EU project STARR, we have investigated user requirements of stroke survivors.

During the last decade, policymakers, learned societies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and some national alliances of all three of these groups have advocated, developed and implemented systematic approaches to fragility fracture care and prevention in a growing number of countries. This chapter reviews the impact of Orthogeriatric Services (OGS) and Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) on delivery of best practice in secondary fracture prevention. An overview of national and international strategies intended to promote widespread implementation of these service models is also provided.

Veto player theory generates predictions about governments' capacity for policy change. Due to the difficulty of identifying significant laws needed to change the policy status quo, evidence about governments' ability to change policy has been mostly provided for a limited number of reforms and single-country studies. To evaluate the predictive power of veto player theory for policy making across time, policy areas and countries, a dataset was gathered that incorporates about 5,600 important government reform measures in the areas of social, labour, economic and taxation policy undertaken in 13 Western European countries from the mid-1980s until the mid-2000s.

For radionuclide therapy, individual patient pharmacokinetics can be measured in three dimensions by sequential SPECT imaging. Accurate registration of the time series of images is central for voxel-based calculations of the residence time and absorbed dose. In this work, rigid and non-rigid methods are evaluated for registration of 6-7 SPECT/CT images acquired over a week, in anatomical regions from the head-and-neck region down to the pelvis.

Motivation: The above-ground tissues of higher plants are generated from a small region of cells situated at the plant apex called the shoot apical meristem. An important genetic control circuit modulating the size of the Arabidopsis thaliana meristem is a feed-back network between the CLAVATA3 and WUSCHEL genes. Although the expression patterns for these genes do not overlap, WUSCHEL activity is both necessary and sufficient (when expressed ectopically) for the induction of CLAVATA3 expression.

Separated Zn cluster entities unexpectedly occur in the solid-state structure of Mn Ga Zn (the central building block is shown). They correspond to centered cuboctahedra, that is, small volumes of face-centered cubic metal. The intriguing segregation of Ga and Zn atoms in Mn Ga Zn was verfied by Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data.

The natural history of idiopathic scoliosis. A study of the incidence of treatment.

Spine (Phila Pa 1976)

April 1988

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Malmö General Hospital, Lund University Sweden.

The natural history of idiopathic scoliosis has been studied between 1969 and 1985 in a well-controlled population of school children, 66,200 cases, between 7 and 16 years of age. The incidence of scoliosis needing treatment (25 degrees or more in progress in growing children) was studied with a cross-sectional as well as a longitudinal survey. When using a cross-sectional technique, a decrease of cases being treated was seen after the introduction of a conventional screening program--thus indicating a change in the natural history of moderate scoliosis.
