Herein, the first example of a homoleptic Ag complex stabilized by a monodentate N-donor ligand is presented. Na[SO] oxidizes the linear Ag complex, Na[Ag(succ)] (1), to form a square planar argentate(iii) ion, [Ag(succ)], which crystallizes with a polymeric chain-structure, M[Ag(succ)] (2), when treated with alkali metal sulfate MSO (M = K, Rb, Cs). A mixed-valent Robin-Day class I system, [(HO)Ag][Ag(succ)] (2), forms in the absence of K/Rb/Cs ion.

Gaining control on optical force by the stimulated-emission resonance effect.

Laboratory for Photochemistry and Spectroscopy, Division for Molecular Imaging and Photonics, Department of Chemistry, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Belgium

The resonance between an electronic transition of a micro/nanoscale object and an incident photon flux can modify the radiation force exerted on that object, especially at an interface. It has been theoretically proposed that a non-linear stimulated emission process can also induce an optical force, however its direction will be opposite to conventional photon scattering/absorption processes. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate that a stimulated emission process can induce a repulsive pulling optical force on a single trapped dye-doped particle.

Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen, Universitetsparken 5, 2100, Copenhagen, Denmark.

DNA-stabilized silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) are easily tunable emitters with intriguing photophysical properties. Here, a DNA-AgNC with dual emission in the red and near-infrared (NIR) regions is presented. Mass spectrometry data showed that two DNA strands stabilize 18 silver atoms with a nanocluster charge of 12+.

The linear and nonlinear optical parameters and morphologic dependence of CsPbBr nanocrystals (NCs) are crucial for device engineering. In particular, such information in asymmetric nanocrystals is still insufficient. We characterized the OPLA (σ) and TPA cross sections (σ) of a series CsPbBr nanocrystals with various aspect ratios (AR) using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS).

Five novel xylosides tagged with the fluorescent probe Pacific Blue™ were synthesized and found to act as substrates for β4GalT7, a bottleneck enzyme in the biosynthetic pathways leading to glycosaminoglycans. By confocal microscopy of A549 cells, we showed that the xylosides were taken up by the cells, but did not enter the Golgi apparatus where most of the glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis occurs. Instead, after a possible double galactosylation by β4GalT7 and β3GalT6, the biosynthesis was terminated.

A direct one-step nucleophilic substitution of the 4-OAc of acetyl protected Neu5Ac is presented. Previously published methods for direct substitution of the 4-OAc are limited to cyclic secondary amines. Here we present conditions that allow for a much wider range of nitrogen nucleophiles as well as thiols and cyanide, to be used.

This work aims to unravel the impact of disubstitution patterns on the physical properties and processing characteristics of indole-based aromatic polyesters. A series of hydroxyl-carboxylate (AB-type) monomers with 1,5-disubstituted indole and 3-6 methylene units was conveniently synthesized and used in bulk polycondensation to yield the corresponding polyesters with decent molecular weight. These new monomers and polyesters showed enhanced thermal stability compared to the previously reported monomers and polyesters with a 1,3-disubstituted indole structure.

Most waste textiles are currently incinerated or landfilled, which is becoming an increasing environmental problem due to the ever-increasing consumption of textiles in the world. New recycling processes are required to address this problem and, although textile-to-textile recycling would be preferable, many researchers have suggested implementing processes based on the depolymerization of the textile fibers. We suggest integrating textile recycling with pulp mills, which would reduce the cost of depolymerizing the textile fibers and, at the same time, would diversify the product portfolio of the pulp mill, transforming the facility into a true biorefinery.

Pepsin-like aspartic proteases (PAPs) are a class of aspartic proteases which shares tremendous structural similarity with human pepsin. One of the key structural features of PAPs is the presence of a β-hairpin motif otherwise known as flap. The biological function of the PAPs is highly dependent on the conformational dynamics of the flap region.

Previous time-resolved spectroscopic experiments and static quantum-chemical calculations attributed nitronaphthalene derivatives one of the fastest time scales for intersystem crossing within organic molecules, reaching the 100 fs mark. Nonadiabatic dynamics simulations on three nitronaphthalene derivatives challenge this view, showing that the experimentally observed ∼100 fs process corresponds to internal conversion in the singlet manifolds. Intersystem crossing, instead, takes place on a longer time scale of ∼1 ps.

Local Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Confined Fluids.

J Chem Theory Comput

School of Science , University of New South Wales, Canberra , Canberra ACT 2600 , Australia.

We describe a new grand canonical Monte Carlo method to treat fluids in pores in chemical equilibrium with a reference bulk. The method is applied to Lennard-Jones particles in pores of different geometry and is shown to be much more accurate and efficient than other techniques such as traditional grand canonical simulations or Widom's particle insertion method. It utilizes a penalty potential to create a gas phase, which is in equilibrium with a more dense liquid component in the pore.

Colloidal all-inorganic perovskite nanocrystals have gained significant attention as a promising material for both fundamental and applied research due to their excellent emission properties. However, reported photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QYs) of blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystals are rather low, mostly due to the fact that the high energy excitons for such wide bandgap materials are easily captured by interband traps, and then decay nonradiatively. In this work, it is demonstrated how to tackle this issue, performing self-assembly of 2D perovskite nanoplatelets into larger size (≈50 nm × 50 nm × 20 nm) cuboid crystals.

Application of enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) in wearable or implantable biomedical devices requires flexible and biocompatible electrode materials. To this end, freestanding and low-cost graphene paper is emerging among the most promising support materials. In this work, we have exploited the potential of using graphene paper with a two-dimensional active surface (2D-GP) as a carrier for enzyme immobilization to fabricate EBFCs, representing the first case of flexible graphene papers directly used in EBFCs.

Nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently drawn considerable research interests; however, their excitonic dynamics seems quite different than that of fullerene acceptors-based devices and remains to be largely explored. A random terpolymer of to pair with a paradigm NFA of 3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (ITIC) such that both complementary optical absorption and very small offsets of both highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels are acquired is designed and synthesized. Despite the small energy offsets, efficient electron/hole transfer between and ITIC is both clearly observed from steady-state photoluminescence and transient absorption spectra and also supported by the measured low exciton binding energy in ITIC.

The galactomannan utilization locus (ManPUL) of the human gut bacterium encodes Man26B, a cell-surface-exposed endomannanase whose functional and structural features have been unclear. Our study now places Man26B in context with related enzymes and reveals the structural basis for its specificity. Man26B prefers longer substrates and is less restricted by galactose side-groups than the mannanase Man26A of the same locus.

During the last two decades, the synthesis of silica with an ordered mesoporous structure has been thoroughly explored. The basis of the synthesis is to let silica monomers polymerize in the presence of an amphiphilic template component. In the first studies, cationic surfactants were used as structure inducer.

The objective of this study was to evaluate total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total phenolic content (TPH), and the identification of anthocyanidin and polyphenolic compounds in 13 colored potatoes collected from the Andean region of Bolivia, and understand how the chemical composition correlated with the botanical classification and molecular characterization of genes, ans (anthocyanidin synthase) and stan1 (Solanum tuberosum anthocyanidin synthase), associated with the synthesis of anthocyanidins. The results show the existence of a limited correlation between botanical classification, based on morphological identification and polyphenol composition. No association between genetic grouping of the ans and stan genes and botanical classification was found.
