Overlapping Systemic Proteins in COVID-19 and Lung Fibrosis Associated with Tissue Remodeling and Inflammation.

A novel patient group with chronic pulmonary fibrosis is emerging post COVID-19. To identify patients at risk of developing post-COVID-19 lung fibrosis, we here aimed to identify systemic proteins that overlap with fibrotic markers identified in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and may predict COVID-19-induced lung fibrosis. Ninety-two proteins were measured in plasma samples from hospitalized patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 in Sweden, before the introduction of the vaccination program, as well as from healthy individuals.

Oat Kilning and Its Effects on Liquid Oat-Base Production.

The aim of this study was to give insights on the effects of an industrially relevant kilning method, with a focus on lipase inactivation and oat-base production. Storage of non-kilned, dehulled oat kernels in either room temperature or at 37 °C for up to 64 days led to increasing lipase activity with time, despite a decrease in moisture content and water activity, demonstrating the importance of kilning before storage. It was shown that the temperature and relative humidity used during the kilning had a major impact on both protein solubility and lipase inactivation.

A diastereospecific synthesis of vicinally substituted 2-oxazolidinones from α,β-unsaturated lactams using -chloroperoxybenzoic acid is reported. Several highly substituted 2-oxazolidinones were obtained in 19-46% yields in a one-pot reaction with complete control over the relative stereochemistry. Immunocompromised patients, especially those receiving B-cell depleting therapies, are at risk for developing atypical presentation with regard to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, with the potential for diagnostic delay and adverse outcomes if such delay occurs. A 66-year-old female with history of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) with previous pulmonary involvement, treated with rituximab and low-dose prednisolone, presented with prolonged fever and cough after having been treated at home for a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection in early July 2023. The patient had a prolonged course over several months with constitutional symptoms such as fever, cough and malaise.

Characterisation of heritable TP53-related cancer syndrome in Sweden-a nationwide study of genotype-phenotype correlations in 90 families.

We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics of families with heritable TP53-related cancer (hTP53rc) syndrome in Sweden with class 4 and 5 germline TP53 variants (gTP53), and to evaluate the genotype-phenotype correlation. These results were also used to evaluate our previously published phenotype prediction model based on TP53 missense variants and their impact on protein conformation. 90 families with hTP53rc were initially identified in Sweden.

Convolutional Neural Networks for the segmentation of hippocampal structures in postmortem MRI scans.

Background: The hippocampus plays a crucial role in memory and is one of the first structures affected by Alzheimer's disease. Postmortem MRI offers a way to quantify the alterations by measuring the atrophy of the inner structures of the hippocampus. Unfortunately, the manual segmentation of hippocampal subregions required to carry out these measures is very time-consuming.

Purpose: Assistance from artefacts and humans are traditionally viewed as separate, and it is often up to the individual to try to combine the different kinds of assistance to suit their needs and preferences. The purpose of this study was to gain new insights into the co-existence of and synergies between artefactual and human assistance in the everyday lives of persons with physical and cognitive impairments, through exploring and analysing narratives of individuals who have first-hand knowledge and experience.
