The knowledge of the lithological context is necessary to interpret trace elements concentrations in the soil. Soil magnetic signature (χ) and soil X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are promising approaches in the study of the spatial variability of trace elements and the environmental monitoring of soil quality. This research aimed to assess the efficiency of measurements of χ and XRF sensors for spatial characterization of zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu) contents in soils of a sandstone-basalt transitional environment, using machine learning modeling.

Biochar is widely used for water and soil remediation in part because of its local availability and low production cost. However, its effectiveness depends on physicochemical properties related to its feedstock and pyrolysis temperature, as well as the environmental conditions of its use site. Furthermore, biochar is susceptible to natural aging caused by changes in soil or sediment moisture, which can alter its redox properties and interactions with contaminants such as arsenic (As).

Dysphagia is a condition that affects the ability to chew and swallow food and beverages, having a major impact on people's health and wellbeing. This work developed gel systems with a customized texture suitable for intake by dysphagic people using 3D printing and milk. Gels were developed using skim powdered milk, cassava starch (native and modified by the Dry Heating Treatment (DHT)), and different concentrations of kappa-carrageenan (ĸC).

Environmental enrichment consists of a way to provide better living conditions for animals, but its influence on physical integrity, thermoregulatory responses, and quality of pork meat is not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the thermoregulatory responses, lesion score, lameness, carcass traits, and meat quality of pigs with and without access to environmental enrichment (EE) in the finishing phase. A total of 432 pigs of the Hampshire lineage, males and females, with average initial and final weights between 22-27 kg and 110-125 kg respectively were evaluated.

The present study evaluated the reproductive compatibility of Riley, 1879, through an integrative approach using biological data and morphometry of three isofemale lines (isolines) collected from two geographical areas. These isolines differed in sequences of mitochondrial DNA and reproductive performance in the laboratory. The wasps used to initiate the isolines were collected in different environments: two lines from a Mediterranean climate in Irvine, California, USA, and one line from a tropical climate in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil.

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic and carcinogenic pollutant that poses a threat to human and animal health by affecting several major organ systems. Urbanization and human activities have led to significant increases in Cd concentration in the environment, including in agroecosystems. To protect against the harmful effects of Cd, efforts are being made to promote safe crop production and to clean up Cd-contaminated agricultural lands and water, reducing Cd exposure through the consumption of contaminated agricultural products.

This study evaluated the influence of different implant diameters, insertion torques, and transmucosal heights on the loosening of abutments installed on short implants, after mechanical cycling. The Morse taper connection implants (n = 96) tested were 5 mm high, divided according to the platform diameter: 4 or 6 mm. A universal abutment was coupled to each implant (with different transmucosal heights: 1 or 5 mm).

Land use and management changes affect the composition and diversity of soil bacteria and fungi, which in turn may alter soil health and the provision of key ecological functions, such as pesticide degradation and soil detoxification. However, the extent to which these changes affect such services is still poorly understood in tropical agroecosystems. Our main goal was to evaluate how land-use (tilled versus no-tilled soil), soil management (N-fertilization), and microbial diversity depletion [tenfold (D1 = 10) and thousandfold (D3 = 10) dilutions] impacted soil enzyme activities (β-glycosidase and acid phosphatase) involved in nutrient cycles and glyphosate mineralization.

Epigenetic mechanisms are important modulators of neurodevelopmental outcomes in the offspring of animals challenged during pregnancy. Pregnant sows living in a confined environment are challenged with stress and lack of stimulation which may result in the expression of stereotypies (repetitive behaviours without an apparent function). Little attention has been devoted to the postnatal effects of maternal stereotypies in the offspring.

Worldwide food security is under threat in the actual scenery of global climate change because the major staple food crops are not adapted to hostile climatic and soil conditions. Significant efforts have been performed to maintain the actual yield of crops, using traditional breeding and innovative molecular techniques to assist them. However, additional strategies are necessary to achieve the future food demand.

This study aimed to determine the effect of circulating progesterone (P4) concentrations produced by a corpus luteum (CL) or released by an intravaginal P4 implant (IPI) on GnRH-induced LH release, ovulatory response, and subsequent CL development, after treatment with 100 μg of gonadorelin acetate (GnRH challenge). Nonlactating multiparous Holstein cows were synchronized and GnRH was used to induce ovulation (d -7). Over 4 replicates, cows that ovulated (n = 87) were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (presence or absence of CL and insertion or not of an IPI at GnRH challenge), creating 4 groups: CL_IPI, CL_NoIPI, NoCL_IPI, and NoCL_NoIPI.
