The effect of paclitaxel plus carboplatin chemotherapy on subclinical cardiotoxicity in patients with non-small cell lung cancer: A speckle tracking echocardiography-based study.

Background: Although chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity is an emerging problem, limited information is available on the effects of chemotherapy on left ventricular (LV) mechanical functions in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Objective: We aimed to explore chemotherapy-induced alterations in cardiac mechanical functions in patients with NSCLC using speckle tracking echocardiography (STE).

Methods: Seventy-one patients with NSCLC and 34 age and sex matched control subjects were consecutively included.

Quality of life, disease activity and preferences for administration routes in rheumatoid arthritis: a multicentre, prospective, observational study.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate quality of life (QoL), disease activity, compliance to treatment, patient and physician preferences for route of administration (RoA), status of health and pain in RA patients starting advanced treatments or needing a switch, and the factors associated with patient preferences.

Methods: A multicentre, prospective, observational and 1-year follow-up study was conducted, between 2015 and 2020, in adult RA patients using advanced treatments for the first time or needing a switch in their current treatments. All the data collected were entered into electronic case report forms.

Evaluation of ganglion cell complex and retinal nerve fiber layer in children with spina bifida using optical coherence tomography.

Purpose: Spina bifida (SB) is a congenital disorder caused by the incomplete fusion of the embryonic neural tube during spinal cord development. In this study, we used Spectral Domain Optic Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) for retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) analyses and compared the results of healthy children and SB patients in a similar age group.

Methods: Our study was planned prospectively and conducted between June 2017 and July 2019.

Triple D score was developed using skin-to-stone distance (SSD), stone density (SD), and stone volume (SV) for prediction of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) outcomes in adults. SWL is the first-line treatment method for kidney stones <2 cm in children, however, it was not validated in the pediatric population. This article aims to validate Triple D score in pediatric patients.

Sirolimus treatment of a PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome presenting with melena.

Background: PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is an umbrella term including Cowden syndrome (CS), Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome (BRRS), PTEN-related Proteus syndrome (PS), and PTEN-related Proteus-like syndrome. One of the disorders in PHTS spectrum, CS is characterized by macrocephaly, mucocutaneous findings, gastrointestinal system (GIS) polyposis and an increased lifetime risk of GIS, breast, thyroid and other cancers.

Case: In this study, we report an adolescent patient presenting with recurrent life-threatening upper GIS bleeding as a result of hamartomatous polyposis.

Post-COVID-19 outcomes of non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease patients: a national, multicenter, controlled study.

Purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a higher mortality in the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there has not been much research in the literature concerning the outcomes of CKD patients in the post-COVID-19 period. We aimed to investigate the outcomes of CKD patients not receiving renal replacement therapy.

Impact of autologous stem cell transplantation on survival outcomes in patients with peripheral T cell lymphoma.

Data about the timing of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) are conflicting. We aimed to investigate the impact of the sequence of ASCT on the survival outcomes in patients with PTCL. The role of vascular endothelial growth factor in the development of papillary thyroid carcinoma in patients with lymphocytic thyroiditis.

Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune chronic inflammatory conditions and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We hypothesized that, as VEGF expression is increased both in PTC and in lymphocytic thyroiditis (LT), it may stimulate the development of PTC in patients with LT. To evaluate this, we examined both tumor and adjacent non-tumoral tissues of PTC patients with and without LT.

Radiographical and clinical results of a new conservative treatment algorithm in Legg-Calvè-Perthes disease: A retrospective study.

Objective: This study aimed to establish a feasible conservative treatment algorithm for Legg-Calvè-Perthes Disease (LCPD), clarify its limitations, and evaluate the correlations between radiographical and clinical results.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with LCPD and treated conservatively were evaluated retrospectively; 39 hips from 35 patients were included. The treatment protocol consisted of intermittent manual traction, range of motion exercises, activity limitation, bed rest, NSAID (ibuprofen 100mg/5mL), and ASA (100mg/day) during attack periods.

Introduction: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) has been widely used to treat the hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). Although it has been shown that IVIG treatment reduces the duration of phototherapy and hospitalization, the use of IVIG in hemolytic disease due to ABO incompatibility has been controversial in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the role of IVIG in the prevention of exchange transfusion in infants with ABO HDN who presented with bilirubin levels at or above the level of exchange transfusion.

Effects of systemic anti-androgen drugs on the ocular surface.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of systemic anti-androgen drugs on tear function tests and the ocular surface.

Methods: Sixty-four male subjects were included in this study. Subjects who were on anti-androgen treatment for prostate cancer (Group A, n: 31) and those who had received only surgical treatment for prostate cancer (Group B, n: 17) were recruited from the department of urology.

The purpose of this study was to determine possible cut-off levels of basal DHEA-S percentile rank in the differential diagnosis of patients with Cushing's syndrome (CS) with ACTH levels in the gray zone and normal DHEA-S levels. In this retrospective study including 623 pathologically confirmed CS, the DHEA-S percentile rank was calculated in 389 patients with DHEA-S levels within reference interval. The patients were classified as group 1 (n=265 Cushing's disease; CD), group 2 (n=104 adrenal CS) and group 3 (n=20 ectopic ACTH syndrome).
