Severe head injury with and without peripheral trauma is the most frequent cause of death and of severe disability up to 45 years. Outcome is determined by two major factors, the extent and nature of the irreversible primary brain damage, and the evolving secondary sequelae, which contrary to the former are responsive in principle to therapeutic intervention. An improvement of outcome from severe head injury can be expected only from an increased efficiency of the measures to prevent secondary brain damage.

In this study, commercial media and kits for identification and tests for antibiotic susceptibility of genital mycoplasmas were evaluated in comparison to standardized methods. A total of 298 specimens was routinely enrolled. To study the role of Kupffer cells (KC) as a cellular source of proinflammatory cytokines in hepatic ischemia/reperfusion, Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to 20 min global hepatic ischemia. Sham-operated animals served as controls. Blood levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) were determined after 10, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min of reperfusion and compared with spontaneous cytokine release by KC isolated after 60 min of reperfusion.

Epitope detection in the envelope of intracellular naked orthopox viruses and identification of encoding genes.

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were generated against vaccinia virus, cowpox virus KR2 Brighton, monkeypox virus Copenhagen, or ectromelia virus. Pairwise epitope specificity studies by competition ELISAs identified 23 distinct antigenic sites in 19 different orthopox virus strains. Six epitopes were completely independent of each other, and 17 closely related antigenic sites formed three separate epitope complexes.
