Putting global health high on the agenda of medical schools.

In this opinion paper, we reflect on global health and global health education as well as challenges that the coming generation are likely to face. As the field is rapidly changing, it is vital to critically reflect categories of "global south" and "global north" as geographical boundaries, and rather think in terms of inequalities that are present in all countries. Global perspectives on health are useful to analyze structural challenges faced in all health care systems and help understand the diversity of cultures and patients' concepts of disease.

Unlabelled: Growth and metastasis of colorectal cancer is closely connected to the biosynthetic capacity of tumor cells, and colorectal cancer stem cells that reside at the top of the intratumoral hierarchy are especially dependent on this feature. By performing disease modeling on patient-derived tumor organoids, we found that elevated expression of the ribosome biogenesis factor NLE1 occurs upon SMAD4 loss in TGFβ1-exposed colorectal cancer organoids. TGFβ signaling-mediated downregulation of NLE1 was prevented by ectopic expression of c-MYC, which occupied an E-box-containing region within the NLE1 promoter.

Exosome-derived long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are extensively engaged in recovery and repair of the injured spinal cord, through different mechanisms. Targeting CD19 represents a promising strategy for the therapy of B-cell malignancies. Although non-engineered CD19 antibodies are poorly effective in mediating complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) or antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP), these effector functions can be enhanced by Fc-engineering. Here, we engineered a CD19 antibody with the aim to improve effector cell-mediated killing and CDC activity by exchanging selected amino acid residues in the Fc domain.

Adducin (Add) is an actin binding protein participating in the stabilization of actin/spectrin networks, epithelial junctional turnover and cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension. Recent results emphasize the supportive effects of adipose-derived multipotent stem/progenitor cells (ADSPCs) in peripheral nerve recovery. Cultivation under hypoxia is considered to enhance the release of the regenerative potential of ADSPCs. Background: Neoadjuvant radiotherapy (naRT) in addition to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (naCT) has been used for locally advanced, inoperable breast cancer or to allow breast conserving surgery (BCS). Retrospective analyses suggest that naRT + naCT might result in an improvement in pathological complete response (pCR rate and disease-free survival). pCR is a surrogate parameter for improved event-free and overall survival (OS) and allows for the adaption of the post-neoadjuvant therapy regimens.

In the equine clinic of the LMU in Munich, therapeutic vitrectomies have been routinely performed in horses for three decades. The vitreous samples obtained during vitrectomies were usually tested for anti- antibodies and for more than 20 years also by PCR for leptospiral DNA. If the indication for surgery was ophthalmologically inconclusive, an aqueous humor was collected preoperatively and examined for evidence of leptospiral infection.

Recently, we have developed novel highly promising gene expression (GE) classifiers discriminating localized nodal (LFL) from systemic follicular lymphoma (SFL) with prognostic impact. However, few data are available in LFL especially concerning hotspot genetic alterations that are associated with the pathogenesis and prognosis of SFL. A total of 144 LFL and 527 SFL, enrolled in prospective clinical trials of the German Low Grade Lymphoma Study Group, were analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization to detect deletions in chromosomes 1p, 6q, and 17p as well as translocations to determine their impact on clinical outcome of LFL patients.

Achieving superlubricity, a state of lubrication where friction nearly vanishes, has become one of the most promising approaches to combat friction-induced energy dissipation and medical device failure. Phospholipids are amphiphilic molecules comprising highly hydrophilic phosphatidylcholine head groups as well as hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains, When solubilized, phospholipids can readily self-assemble to form different structures such as bilayers and vesicles (liposomes). Background: Concurrent platinum-based chemoradiotherapy (CRT) followed by durvalumab maintenance treatment represents the new standard of care in unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this prospective hypothesis-generating single-center study, we aim to identify a framework of prognostic and predictive biomarkers by longitudinal characterization of tumor- and patient (host)-related parameters over all phases of multimodal treatment.

Methods: This study will enroll 40 patients (≥18 years, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) 0-2, with a diagnosis of PD-L1 positive (≥1%), inoperable stage III NSCLC) with an indication for CRT followed by maintenance treatment with durvalumab according to European Medicines Agency (EMA) approval.

A unified surveillance mechanism for hand hygiene and hospital-acquired infections for pediatric wards is lacking in Europe. We managed to setup such a mechanism in 9 pediatric intensive care units in 7 European countries, using World Health Organization's definitions and common methodology which allows for benchmarking among units and countries. Median hand hygiene compliance was found high 82.
