Reported tick-borne-encephalitis (TBE) cases have been increasing in Western Austria, but no data are available on vaccination- and infection-specific seroprevalence. This study aimed to estimate current TBEV-seroprevalence in the region and inform prevention programs by comparing anti-NS1-based-incidence rates with reported case numbers and vaccination coverage. Between December 2023 and February 2024, serum samples from 4619 blood donors in Western Austria were collected and analyzed using TBEV- and WNV-IgG-ELISA assays.

Technologies to study mRNA in post-mortem human brain samples have greatly advanced our understanding of brain pathologies. With ongoing improvements, particularly in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, these technologies will continue to enhance our knowledge in the future. Despite various considerations for tissue and mRNA quality, such as pre-mortem health status and RNA integrity, the impact of the tissue fixation time has not been addressed in a systemic fashion yet.

Background: The healthcare sector, while dedicated to improving health, paradoxically contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, accounting for approximately 4.9% of global emissions. Despite growing public concern about climate change, few studies have explored patients' awareness and attitudes toward the environmental impact of healthcare.

Background: Integrated knowledge translation (IKT) aims to enhance evidence-informed decision-making in public health and healthcare by establishing continuous relationships between researchers and knowledge users, in particular decision-makers. The Collaboration for Evidence-Based Healthcare and Public Health in Africa (CEBHA+) undertook research on noncommunicable diseases in Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda. Alongside the research activities, we implemented an IKT approach, which entailed training and the development and implementation of site-specific IKT strategies.

In patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), intratumoural and intertumoural heterogeneity increases chemoresistance and mortality rates. However, such morphological and phenotypic diversities are not typically captured by organoid models of PDAC. Here we show that branched organoids embedded in collagen gels can recapitulate the phenotypic landscape seen in murine and human PDAC, that the pronounced molecular and morphological intratumoural and intertumoural heterogeneity of organoids is governed by defined transcriptional programmes (notably, epithelial-to-mesenchymal plasticity), and that different organoid phenotypes represent distinct tumour-cell states with unique biological features in vivo.

Aims: In the treatment of basal thumb osteoarthritis (OA), intra-articular autologous fat transplantation has become of great interest within recent years as a minimally invasive and effective alternative to surgical intervention with regard to pain reduction. This study aims to assess its long-term effectiveness.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with stage one to three OA received a single intra-articular autologous fat transplantation.

There is growing interest in lifestyle interventions as stand-alone and add-on therapies in mental health care due to their potential benefits for both physical and mental health outcomes. We evaluated lifestyle interventions focusing on physical activity, diet, and sleep in adults with severe mental illness (SMI) and the evidence for their effectiveness. To this end, we conducted a meta-review and searched major electronic databases for articles published prior to 09/2022 and updated our search in 03/2024.

Background: Energetic aspects of neuronal activity have become a major focus of interest given the fact that the brain among all organs dominates the oxygen consumption. At variance with the importance of neuroenergetics, the knowledge about how electrical activity and metabolism is correlated in defined neuronal populations is still rather scarce.
Results: We have estimated the ATP consumption in the two physiologically well characterized populations of frog central vestibular neurons, with tonic and phasic firing patterns, respectively.

Knowledge about potential risk factors for animal health is crucial to achieve animal welfare. The aim of this study was to provide practical guidance for farmers to improve the health status of their youngstock by identifying and eliminating risk factors for omphalitis in neonatal calves. A cross-sectional study including 3,445 dairy calves from 567 farms located in three structurally different regions of Germany was performed from December 2016 to July 2019.

Objectives: In most countries the majority of patients are in outpatient care. In difference to hospitalized patients, their blood samples often take hours after collection to centrifugation. The study investigates the release of potassium and the development of pseudohyperkalemia in lithium heparin (Li-Hep) and serum blood collection tubes over time.

We discuss the challenges that the standard (Humean and non-Humean) accounts of laws face within the framework of quantum gravity where space and time may not be fundamental. This paper identifies core (meta)physical features that cut across a number of quantum gravity approaches and formalisms and that provide seeds for articulating updated conceptions that could account for QG laws not involving any spatio-temporal notions. To this aim, we will in particular highlight the constitutive roles of quantum entanglement, quantum transition amplitudes and quantum causal histories.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are established structural imaging markers of cerebral small vessel disease. The pathophysiologic condition of brain tissue varies over the core, the vicinity, and the subtypes of WMH and cannot be interpreted from conventional magnetic resonance imaging. We aim to improve our pathophysiologic understanding of WMHs and the adjacently injured normal-appearing white matter in terms of microstructural and microvascular alterations using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging in patients with sporadic and genetic cerebral small vessel disease.

The use of the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) serum concentration as a fertility marker has been shown in cows, sheep and mares and has been indicated in one study in female dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the connection between the AMH serum concentration, taken at two defined time points during the bitch`s heat, and the litter size to investigate whether AMH can be used as a practical measurement for the individual breeding bitch to predict litter size. The study was carried out on 27 healthy female dogs presented for pre-breeding examination, considering all previously known influencing factors on AMH in the bitch such as age, body weight and estrous cycle phase at the time the sample was taken.

CLL1 Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, as a promising immunotherapeutic approach, has demonstrated its potential to enhance the prognosis of patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, due to the overexpression of CLL1 on neutrophils, CAR-T cells not only eliminated tumor cells but also eradicated neutrophils simultaneously, resulting in severe granulocytopenia and subsequent infections. Considering the distinct expression levels of CD15/CD16 on neutrophils and AML blasts, we have devised novel modified CD15 /CD16-CLL1 iCAR structures incorporating diverse inhibitory elements.

Iron homoeostasis is tightly regulated, with hepcidin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) playing significant roles. However, the genetic determinants of these traits and the biomedical consequences of iron homoeostasis variation are unclear. In a meta-analysis of 12 cohorts involving 91,675 participants, we found 43 genomic loci associated with either hepcidin or sTfR concentration, of which 15 previously unreported.

Background: Cancer immunotherapy has revolutionized melanoma treatment, but the high number of non-responders still emphasizes the need for improvement of therapy. One potential avenue for enhancing anti-tumor treatment is through the modulation of coagulation and platelet activity. Both have been found to play an important role in the tumor microenvironment, tumor growth and metastasis.

DNA methylation in peripheral tissues may be a relevant biomarker of risk for developing mental disorders after exposure to early life adversity. Genes involved in HPA axis regulation, such as , might play a key role. In this study, we aimed to identify the main drivers of salivary methylation in a cohort of 162 maltreated and non-maltreated children aged 3-5 years at two measurement timepoints.

-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) is crucial for methylation and tightly controlled in cells. We examined SAM-III riboswitch response to 17 SAM analogues and used a Spinach/SAM aptasensor to monitor their enzymatic formation . Most SAM analogues were recognized, unless they featured an -substituted benzyl ring, indicating potential regulatory effects SAM riboswitches.
