The present study examines the taxonomy of sponge specimens with unique chemistry collectively known as Fascaplysinopsis reticulata (Hentschel, 1912). Examination of Hentschels original species upon which the genus Fascaplysinopsis Bergquist, 1980 was based in conjunction with a comparison with recent Indo-west Pacific collections, using morphological and molecular analyses (ITS and 28S rDNA), revealed extensive variation. Fascaplysinopsis reticulata was found to be a species complex comprising the genus Fascaplysinopsis, as well as two new genera: Skolosachlys gen.

This study reports on some deep water sponges in the family Polymastiidae collected during the 2017 Abyss Cruise off the East Coast of Australia and the 2003 NORFANZ Expedition to the Lord Howe and Norfolk Ridges in the Tasman Sea, Southwest Pacific Ocean. Species of Radiella, Spinularia, Ridleia, Tentorium and Polymastia were collected from abyssal and bathyal depths. From these collections, seven new species were discovered: Radiella nidula sp.

In Situ Metabolomics of Cortisol-Producing Adenomas.

February 2023

Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik IV, Klinikum der Universitt, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitt Mnchen, Munich, Germany.

Background: Recent advances in omics techniques have allowed detailed genetic characterization of cortisol-producing adrenal adenoma (CPA). In contrast, the pathophysiology of CPAs has not been elucidated in detail on the level of tumor metabolic alterations.

Methods: The current study conducted a comprehensive mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) map of CPAs in relation to clinical phenotypes and immunohistochemical profiles of steroidogenic enzymes.

In freshwater systems, cyanobacteria are strong competitors under enhanced temperature and eutrophic conditions. Understanding their adaptive and evolutionary potential to multiple environmental states allows us to accurately predict their response to future conditions. To better understand if the combined impacts of temperature and nutrient limitation could suppress the cyanobacterial blooms, a single strain of Microcystis aeruginosa was inoculated into natural phytoplankton communities with different nutrient conditions: oligotrophic, eutrophic and eutrophic with the addition of bentophos.

The 230-kb human cytomegalovirus genome is among the largest of the known viruses. Experiments to determine the genetic determinants of attenuation, pathogenesis, and tissue tropism are underway; however, a lack of complete sequence data for multiple strains and substantial problems with genetic instability during in vitro propagation create serious complications for such studies. For example, recent findings suggest that common laboratory strains Towne and AD169 passaged in cultured human fibroblasts are missing up to 15 kb of genetic information relative to clinical isolates.

Towards gene therapy of cystic fibrosis.

Eur J Med Res

March 1998

Kinderpoliklinik der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit¿t, Abt. Molekulare Pneumologie, Pettenkoferstr. 8a, Munich, D-80336, Germany.

Numerous gene mutations associated with hereditary disorders have been identified. In cystic fibrosis the hereditary defect is attributed to mutations in one single gene, the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Conventional therapies of CF have dramatically increased the life expectancy of afflicted individuals.

Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1) is an autocrine growth factor for thyrocytes and is supposed to be the mediator of iodine-induced growth inhibition of thyroid epithelial cells, but this is still controversial. We further investigated this hypothesis using intact porcine thyroid follicles ex vivo in a three-dimensional culture system. In this culture system it has been shown previously that both iodide as well as delta-iodolactone, the putative iodocompound mediating thyroid cell proliferation, inhibit growth of these follicles.

The purpose of this uncontrolled, prospective study was to evaluate the influence of long-term augmentation therapy with plasma-derived alpha 1-antitrypsin (AAT) on lung function parameters in patients with severe emphysema caused by AAT deficiency. Twenty patients (mean age 48 years) received AAT infusions once weekly for up to 36 months. No adverse effects were observed.

We compared the effect of the specific type IV phosphodiesterase inhibitor rolipram on intracellular cAMP concentration, nitric oxide (NO) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) formation in the murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7. We found a dose-dependent increase of nitrite accumulation in LPS-stimulated macrophages from 17.

We present 2 cases of subcutaneous fat necrosis associated with pancreatic disease. In 1 of these cases the correct diagnosis led to the detection of a clinically asymptomatic chronic pancreatitis. The pathogenesis of this disease, not yet fully explained, and the differential diagnosis of other forms of panniculitis are reviewed.

Both Shy-Drager syndrome and pheochromocytoma are characterized by an abnormal catecholamine secretion, e.g. a reduced secretion in Shy-Drager syndrome, and an excessive stimulation in pheochromocytoma resulting in adrenergic dysfunction and in adrenergic hyperactivity, respectively.
