Urolithiasis is a common and recurrent condition in the urological spectrum. Despite various proposed mechanisms, the causal relationship between sleep traits and the risk of urolithiasis remains unclear. We used publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen to perform a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and genetic correlation analysis, evaluating the causal relationship and genetic correlation between sleep traits (chronotype, getting up in the morning, sleep duration, nap during the day, and insomnia) and urolithiasis (calculus of the kidney and ureter, and calculus of the lower urinary tract).

Lung cancer is considered the most ubiquitous malignant form of cancer, and the current treatment strategies do not offer effective outcomes to the patients. The present study examined the effectiveness of natural drugs delphinidin (DN) and oroxylin A (OA) in inhibiting the development of lung cancer cells (A549) through the blocking of the Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) intervene signaling pathways. These included cytotoxicity assessments, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, apoptotic morphological features, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), nuclear fragmentation, and cell cycle analysis.

Separation of high-purity plasma extracellular vesicles for investigating proteomic signatures in diabetic retinopathy.

National Engineering Research Center of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou, 325027, China. Electronic address:

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a multifaceted role in intercellular communication and hold significant promise as bio-functional indicators for clinical diagnosis. Although plasma samples represent one of the most critical sources of circulating EVs, the existing technical challenges associated with plasma-EV isolation have restricted their application in disease diagnosis and biomarker discovery. In this study, we introduce a two-step purification method utilizing ultracentrifugation (UC) to isolate crude extracellular vesicle (EV) samples, followed by a phospholipid affinity-based technique for the selective isolation of small EVs, ensuring a high level of purity for downstream proteomic analysis.

Background: The oxidative balance score (OBS), an encompassing scoring mechanism for assessing oxidative stress, is formulated based on nutritional and lifestyle components. The emergence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is intricately linked to oxidative stress. Nonetheless, the correlation between OBS and MetS displays variability within distinct cohorts.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and lipoproteins (LPPs) serve as important carriers of circulating miRNAs in peripheral blood, offering immense potential for disease diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. Due to their shared physicochemical attributes, EVs and LPPs are frequently coisolated, potentially leading to misunderstandings regarding their distinct functional roles in physiological and pathological processes. Here, we report a highly selective magnetic system based on the pH-mediated affinity displayed by cibacron blue (CB) toward EVs and LPPs, enabling successful separation and collection of these two nanoparticles without cross-contamination for subsequent circulating RNA analysis.

Department of Urology, Lu'an People's Hospital of Anhui Province, Lu'an Hospital of Anhui Medical University, No.21, Wanxi West Road, Lu'an, 237000, Anhui, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists wanted to see if a special type of RNA called lncRNA SNHG16 in urine could help detect bladder cancer in patients compared to healthy people.
  • They collected urine samples from 42 bladder cancer patients and 42 healthy volunteers and tested the RNA levels.
  • The results showed that lncRNA SNHG16 was much higher in bladder cancer patients, making it a promising tool for diagnosing bladder cancer better than the usual tests.

Background: Currently, the main treatment for lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) is revascularization, including endovascular revascularization (EVR) and open surgical revascularization (OSR), but the specific revascularization strategy for LEAD is controversial. This review provided the comprehensive and recent evidence for the treatment of LEAD.

Methods: Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant articles.

Background: AI-based clinical decision support system (CDSS) has important prospects in overcoming the current informational challenges that cancer diseases faced, promoting the homogeneous development of standardized treatment among different geographical regions, and reforming the medical model. However, there are still a lack of relevant indicators to comprehensively assess its decision-making quality and clinical impact, which greatly limits the development of its clinical research and clinical application. This study aims to develop and application an assessment system that can comprehensively assess the decision-making quality and clinical impacts of physicians and CDSS.

Melatonin possesses potent hepatoprotective properties, but it remains to be elucidated whether melatonin has a therapeutic effect on monocrotaline (MCT)-induced hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (HSOS). In this study, male Sprague Dawley rats were intraperitoneally injected with melatonin or the same volume of vehicle at 0 and 24 h after MCT intragastric administration. Next, hematoxylin-eosin staining and electron microscopy were performed to evaluate the hepatic sinusoidal injury of rats.

Background: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MP-MRI) has high sensitivity for diagnosing breast cancers but cannot always be used as a routine diagnostic tool. The present study aimed to evaluate whether the diagnostic performance of perfluorobutane (PFB) contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is similar to that of MP-MRI in breast cancer and whether combining the two methods would enhance diagnostic efficiency.

Protective effect of inhibiting necroptosis on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity.

FASEB J

September 2022

Inflammation and Immune Mediated Diseases Laboratory of Anhui Province, Anhui Institute of Innovative Drugs, School of Pharmacy, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, China.

Necroptosis is defined as a novel programmed cell necrosis that is mediated by receptor interacting serine-threonine protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) and other related signals. Necrosis, apoptosis and inflammation are commonly considered as the leading mechanism in acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by gentamicin (GEN), which is a useful antibiotic for treating the infection of Gram-negative bacterial. However, the necroptosis in the pathogenesis of GEN-induced AKI is unknown.
