August 2022

Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science, Mount Sinai Health System, Icahn School of Medicine, New York, New York, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the financial impact of anticipated in-person fellowship interviews in obstetrics and gynecology (ObGyn) during the 2020 interview season, which shifted to virtual platforms due to COVID-19.
  • A survey completed by 158 applicants revealed that women and Black applicants faced greater financial barriers and were more likely to seek additional funding for interviews.
  • The findings suggest that virtual interviews may alleviate financial burdens that disproportionately affect underrepresented groups, potentially enhancing diversity in ObGyn subspecialties.

Background: Studies have shown that data collection by medical record abstraction (MRA) is a significant source of error in clinical research studies relying on secondary use data. Yet, the quality of data collected using MRA is seldom assessed. We employed a novel, theory-based framework for data quality assurance and quality control of MRA.

multiple epidermal growth factor-like domains 8 (dMegf8) is a homolog of human encodes a multidomain transmembrane protein which is highly conserved across species. In humans, mutations cause a rare genetic disorder called Carpenter syndrome, which is frequently associated with abnormal left-right patterning, cardiac defects, and learning disabilities. is also associated with psychiatric disorders.

Soft tissue filler injections have become the second most common noninvasive cosmetic procedure performed in the United States, accounting for roughly 26% of all noninvasive procedures. As experience with filler injections has increased, so too have the applications and uses throughout the face. The popularity of "liquid," or nonsurgical, rhinoplasty has grown considerably with both patients and surgeons over the last decade.

Establishment of the DNA methylation landscape of mammalian oocytes, mediated by the DNMT3A-DNMT3L complex, is crucial for reproduction and development. In mouse oocytes, high levels of DNA methylation occur exclusively in the transcriptionally active regions, with moderate to low levels of methylation in other regions. Histone H3K36me3 mediates the high levels of methylation in the transcribed regions; however, it is unknown which histone mark guides the methylation in the other regions.

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, UT Health San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, USA.

South Texas has higher TB disease incidence than much of the United States. We evaluated a multi-site South Texas interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA)-based testing and latent TB infection (LTBI) treatment program targeting high-risk populations. Number of IGRA tests, test results, LTBI confirmation, and treatment outcomes were collected over 2.

Background: Hispanic children face disproportionately higher risks for early life obesity and resultant comorbidities such as Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. Sleep habits are modifiable behaviors that impact early childhood obesity; Hispanic infants have been shown to have less nighttime sleep compared to their white counterparts. Pediatricians often coach families on parents' nighttime responsive feeding and longer child sleep duration as protective factors against early life obesity, but must understand the family context and potential barriers.

In this 2019 cross-sectional study, we analyzed hospital records for Medicaid beneficiaries who acquired nonventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia. The results suggest that preventive dental treatment in the 12 months prior or periodontal therapy in the 6 months prior to a hospitalization is associated with a reduced risk of NVHAP.

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection of Abdominal Wall after Lipoabdominoplasty: Complication following Medical Tourism.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

July 2022

Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Joe R and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, University of Texas Health San Antonio, San Antonio, Tex.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is an acute life-threatening complication of cosmetic surgery. We present a case study of a 48-year-old woman diagnosed with NSTI of the abdominal wall following liposuction, abdominoplasty, and ventral hernia repair performed in Latin America. In the operating room, bowel perforation at the hepatic flexure was observed requiring emergent fascial debridement, bowel resection, and broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Introduction: Biomarkers of acute kidney injury (AKI) are often indexed to urine creatinine (UCr) or urine osmolarity (UOsm) to control for urine concentration. We evaluated how these approaches affect the biomarker-outcome association in patients with AKI.

Methods: The Assessment, Serial Evaluation, and Subsequent Sequelae in Acute Kidney Injury Study was a cohort of hospitalized patients with and without AKI between 2009 and 2015.

July 2022

Division of General & Hospital Medicine, Joe R. and Terry Lozano Long School of Medicine, University of Texas Health San Antonio, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, MC 7885, San Antonio, TX, 78229, USA.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is rapidly becoming ubiquitous across healthcare specialties. This is due to several factors including its portability, immediacy of results to guide clinical decision-making, and lack of radiation exposure to patients. The recent growth of handheld ultrasound devices has improved access to ultrasound for many clinicians.

TDP-43 drives synaptic and cognitive deterioration following traumatic brain injury.

Acta Neuropathol

August 2022

Department of Cellular and Integrative Physiology, Center for Biomedical Neuroscience, Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas, 78229, USA.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been recognized as an important risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the molecular mechanisms by which TBI contributes to developing AD remain unclear. Here, we provide evidence that aberrant production of TDP-43 is a key factor in promoting AD neuropathology and synaptic and cognitive deterioration in mouse models of mild closed head injury (CHI).

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor clinical outcome, due to a lack of actionable therapeutic targets. Herein we define lysosomal acid lipase A (LIPA) as a viable molecular target in TNBC and identify a stereospecific small molecule (ERX-41) that binds LIPA. ERX-41 induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress resulting in cell death, and this effect is on target as evidenced by specific LIPA mutations providing resistance.
