Many motor and neurodegenerative diseases affect the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The myelinated axons in the sciatic nerves offer valuable insights into the pathology of these diseases. Here, we present a protocol for isolating and processing mouse sciatic nerves for confocal immunohistochemistry.

Background: We analyzed long-term control and patterns of failure in patients with World Health Organization Grade 1 meningiomas treated with definitive or postoperative stereotactic radiosurgery at the authors' affiliated institution.
Methods: 96 patients were treated between 2004 and 2019 with definitive (n = 57) or postoperative (n = 39) stereotactic radiosurgery. Of the postoperative patients, 17 were treated adjuvantly following subtotal resection and 22 were treated as salvage at time of progression.

Unlabelled: Appendiceal adenocarcinoma (AA) is unique from other gastrointestinal malignancies in that it almost exclusively metastasizes to the peritoneal cavity. However, few studies have investigated the molecular interaction of the peritoneal microenvironment and AA. Here, we use a multi-omics approach with orthotopic and flank-implanted patient-derived xenografts (PDX) to study the effect of the peritoneal microenvironment on AA.

An increasing number of practicing physician assistants (PAs) are using ultrasound (US) in clinical settings. However, a lack of US learning objectives for PA students limits the optimal integration of this imaging modality in PA curricula. This study surveyed PA program directors across the United States to create a list of US learning objectives for PA students and to gauge their attitudes toward integrating US into anatomy curricula.

Background: In clinical research, prevention of systematic and random errors of data collected is paramount to ensuring reproducibility of trial results and the safety and efficacy of the resulting interventions. Over the last 40 years, empirical assessments of data accuracy in clinical research have been reported in the literature. Although there have been reports of data error and discrepancy rates in clinical studies, there has been little systematic synthesis of these results.

A 31-year-old woman reported dizziness in the early postpartum period after receiving dexmedetomidine. The ECG was misinterpreted as complete heart block; however, more careful analysis revealed an atypical Wenckebach pattern with dual AV nodal conduction and termination of nonconducted P waves with junctional escape beats. The patient's rhythm returned to sinus after stopping dexmedetomidine.

Few studies have examined heterogeneous associations of risk factors with Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) symptoms by type. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of and risk factors associated with COVID-19 symptoms and to investigate whether the associations differ by the type of symptoms. This study obtained longitudinal data over 6 months from laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in a citywide sample in San Antonio.

Live biotherapeutic products (LBPs) represent a new class of therapeutics indicated to prevent the recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in adults. However, microbiota-based therapies have been used in CDI management before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designated this new drug class. The regulation of these microbiome-based therapies has varied, and several safety concerns have arisen over time.

Aerobic exercise, specifically high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), and its effects on renal health and filtration (RHF) are not well understood. Several studies support incorporating contemporary biomarkers serum cystatin C (CyC) and urine epidermal growth factor (uEGF) to combat the volatility of serum creatinine (sCr). Using these biomarkers, we examined the acute influences HIIE has on RHF to determine if there is a ceiling effect in healthy populations.

Introduction: The Valsalva maneuver and its modifications have been utilized across several conditions in medicine; however, there have been difficulties in its application. Thus, at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, we designed and patented an affordable and accessible device that mimics Valsalva called " (FISST).
Areas Covered: In this review, we discuss the premise for the design of FISST, based on applications of the law of conservation energy, the continuity equation, and Bernoulli's principle.

Ruxolitinib is a cornerstone of management for some subsets of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs); however, a considerable number of patients respond suboptimally. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of micheliolide (MCL), a natural guaianolide sesquiterpene lactone, alone or in combination with ruxolitinib in samples from patients with MPNs, V617F-mutated MPN cell lines, and a V617F knock-in mouse model. MCL effectively suppressed colony formation of hematopoietic progenitors in samples from patients with MPNs and inhibited cell growth and survival of MPN cell lines in vitro.

Objectives: Clinical interprofessional education (IPE) is defined as learning that occurs within clinical learning environments such as hospitals, primary care clinics, and long-term care facilities where learners collaborate to deliver care to real patients. The objective of this secondary analysis of a scoping review is to identify, characterize, and summarize evidence from the published literature regarding clinical IPE for pharmacy learners in the inpatient setting.
Findings: PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were searched for clinical IPE articles that met the following inclusion criteria: ≥ 2 health professions, ≥ 2 learner groups, and involvement of real patients/patient care.

Methotrexate is a major component of pediatric leukemia treatment. While toxicities are common after high-dose methotrexate, escalating dose methotrexate (Capizzi methotrexate) is typically well-tolerated. We report an adolescent Hispanic female with pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia, preexisting obesity and hepatic steatosis who developed severe multiorgan failure following an escalating dose of methotrexate with delayed methotrexate excretion of 11 days.

The Contactin-associated protein 1 (Cntnap1) mouse mutants fail to establish proper axonal domains in myelinated axons. Human CNTNAP1 mutations are linked to hypomyelinating neuropathy-3, which causes severe neurological deficits. To understand the human neuropathology and to model human CNTNAP1 and CNTNAP1 mutations, we generated Cntnap1 and Cntnap1 mouse mutants, respectively.

Background: Dentists bend needles prior to certain injections; however, there are concerns regarding needle fracture, lumen occlusion, and sharps handling. A previous study found that a 30-gauge needle fractures after four to nine 90° bends. This fatigue life study evaluated how many 90° bends a 30-gauge dental needle will sustain before fracture when bent using a needle guide.
