Background: The impact of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) use on worsening renal function is controversial and lacks a solid pathophysiological explanation.
Objective: To assess the risk of worsening renal function and acute kidney injury (AKI) in PPI initiators as compared with H2-blockers initiators.
Design: Retrospective cohort study using longitudinal records from BIGAN, a population-based health database of Aragón (Spain).

Purpose: To investigate best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), subretinal fluid (SRF) absorption time or ellipsoid zone (EZ) restoration time and various variables in patients with persistent SRF after successful primary repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Methods: This retrospective multicenter study allowed independent analysis of the healing pattern by two observers based on composite of serial cross-sectional macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. Univariate and multivariate analyses were implemented.

This article presents three cases of Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) occurring during 'ab externo' phacocanaloplasty procedures in three patients with uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and discusses the management of this condition by reviewing the available literature. Following a successful 360° cannulation of Schlemm's canal (SC), the microcatheter was withdrawn while an ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) was injected into the canal. During passage through the inferonasal quadrant, a spontaneous separation of the posterior layer of the cornea was observed.

() is a key agent in several upper gastrointestinal diseases. Treatment of infection is the main strategy for resolving the associated gastroduodenal damage in infected patients and for the prevention of gastric cancer development. Infection management is becoming complex due to the increase in antibiotic resistance, which already represents a global healthcare problem.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the central nervous system's most common autosomal dominant conditions. The diagnosis is based on the clinical diagnostic criteria and/or a molecularly confirmed mutation in the NF1 gene. This study investigated the possibility of substantiating choroidal nodules as a diagnostic criterion for the disease, including patients affected with and without high myopia.

Background And Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with a decrease in the colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence, due to the disruption of screening programmes and a downscaling of endoscopic activity. The endpoint of this study is to evaluate if the pandemic has led to a change in CRC diagnostic rate and presentation in our population.
Methods: Multicenter retrospective study of all public hospitals of the Aragon region, attending a population of 1,329,391 inhabitants.

This review summarizes the main pancreatic diseases from a nutritional approach. Nutrition is a cornerstone of pancreatic disease and is sometimes undervalued. An early identification of malnutrition is the first step in maintaining an adequate nutritional status in acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

Aim: Aerosols released from the oral cavity help spread the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The use of a mouthwash formulated with an antiviral agent could reduce the viral load in saliva, helping to lower the spread of the virus. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a mouthwash with 0.

Purpose: To analyze the recovery course of foveal microstructures in eyes with nonsurgical healing of full-thickness macular hole (FTMH).
Methods: By serial OCT scans, the temporal healing sequences were analyzed in ocular trauma, vitreomacular traction (VMT), cystoid macular edema (CME), and the remaining group. We evaluated correlations between the final best-corrected spectacle visual acuity and reconstruction time of external limiting membrane (ELM), and inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS).

Retinal findings may change in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The present study aims to evaluate several retinal findings, such as macula layer thickness, the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, and the optic nerve head in patients with OSAS, using optical coherence tomography (OCT); it also aims to monitor the result of several types of treatment of OSAS with OCT. A prospective comparative study was designed.

Circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) is a rare congenital ocular tumor type that is usually benign and asymptomatic. CCH has only been reported once previously in the literature in association with a visceral neoplasm. Here, we present a newly described association between CCH and hepatic hemangioma (HH).

Introduction: The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) has proven to be an important tool for the management of autonomous nerve system in both surgical and critically ill patients. We conducted this study to show the different spectral frequency and time domain parameters of HRV as a prospective predictor for critically ill patients, and in particular for COVID-19 patients who are on mechanical ventilation. The hypothesis is that most severely ill COVID-19 patients have a depletion of the sympathetic nervous system and a predominance of parasympathetic activity reflecting the remaining compensatory anti-inflammatory response.

Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) in acute pancreatitis (AP) as an endpoint centred on the patient.
Design: A PROM instrument (PAtieNt-rePoRted OutcoMe scale in acute pancreatItis, an international proSpEctive cohort study, PAN-PROMISE scale) was designed based on the opinion of patients, professionals and an expert panel. The scale was validated in an international multicentre prospective cohort study, describing the severity of AP and quality of life at 15 days after discharge as the main variables for validation.

Since the first description of uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (U-VATS) (or single-port) lobectomy, several centers in Asia and Europe rapidly adopted this technique as a standard approach for treatment of early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Despite the controversies regarding feasibility and completeness of resection, thoracic surgeons in high volume centers keep pushing the limits to perform very complex procedures also known as "extended resections" through minimally invasive surgery. Published series and case reports confirm the viability of U-VATS in highly complex surgical cases such as pneumonectomy, chest wall resection and bronchoplasty, which require experience and technical ability to be performed through a 3-6 cm single incision.

The aim of this study was to develop an in-vitro topical treatment for Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) effective against cysts and trophozoites. Qualitative assays were performed with voriconazole, chlorhexidine, propamidine, cellulase, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin and paromomycin as monotherapy and various combinations. Riboflavin with ultraviolet-A (R + UV-A) as monotherapy or combined with voriconazole and moxifloxacin was also tested.

Purpose: To develop a rabbit model of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) as the best method to reproduce the natural course of this disease.
Methods: To induce AK, infected contact lenses (1000 amoebae/mm2, 90% trophozoites) were placed over the previously debrided corneal surface, in combination with a temporary tarsorrhaphy. Environmental and clinical strains of Acanthamoeba spp.

Background: This study was done to evaluate the visual and anatomical outcomes of topical regenerating agents as a novel therapy for neutrophic corneal ulcer (NCU) secondary to acanthamoeba infection.
Findings: A 20-year-old woman with a history of contact lens wear was referred to our hospital for keratitis after responding poorly to conventional treatment. In vivo confocal microscopy images suggested acanthamoeba keratitis with double-walled cysts in the anterior corneal stroma.

Advances in ophthalmic surgery, together with achieving greater patient safety, have changed the requirements of regional anaesthesia of the eye, orbit, and periocular skin. Patient comfort, safety, and low complication rates are essentials of regional anesthesia, which includes invasive procedures that generate intraoperative and postoperative analgesia, as well as akinesia. We present the currently used local anesthesia (topical and subcutaneous infiltration of local anesthetics) and regional anesthetic techniques in ophthalmic procedures, describing the techniques, advantages, disadvantages, and complications in ophthalmic regional blocks, as well as some educational measures to implement them to reduce the risk of ocular complications.
