Gut microbiome and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: Pathogenic role and potential for therapeutics.

Gut microbiota plays key functions in the human body, and its alteration is associated with several human disorders. Moreover, its manipulation is being investigated as a potential therapeutic strategy. In this narrative review we will dissect the involvement of the gut microbiota and of the gut-liver axis on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Background: We analyzed the long-term influence of fixation systems on proximal aortic neck (PAN) evolution by comparing 2 late-generation endoprostheses, Endurant (Medtronic Vascular, Minneapolis, Minn) with suprarenal fixation (SRF) and Excluder (W.L Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, Ariz) with infrarenal fixation (IRF).

Methods: Our retrospective observational study included consecutive patients undergoing endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for aorto-iliac aneurysms (2011-2020).

Cancer resistance to treatments is a challenge that researchers constantly seek to overcome. For instance, TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a potential good prospect as an anti-cancer therapy, as it attacks tumor cells but not normal cells. However, treatments based in soluble TRAIL provided incomplete clinical results and diverse formulations have been developed to improve its bioactivity.

Safeness and efficacy of 2-µm handheld thulium laser during microsurgical resection of supratentorial and infratentorial meningiomas: Experience of a single center.

Aims: We performed a retrospective nonrandomized study to analyze the results of a microsurgery of intracranial meningiomas using 2-μm thulium flexible handheld laser fiber (Revolix jr).

Methods: From February 2014 to December 2021, 75 nonconsecutive patients suffering from intracranial meningiomas, admitted in our department, have been operated on with microsurgical technique assisted by 2-μm thulium flexible handheld laser. We have reviewed demographic and clinical data to evaluate safety and efficacy of the technique.

Beyond the Glycaemic Control of Dapagliflozin: Microangiopathy and Non-classical Complications.

Dapagliflozin is a selective sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (EF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). In monotherapy or as an additive therapy, dapagliflozin aids glycaemic control, is associated with reductions in blood pressure and weight, and promotes a favourable lipid profile. In this review, we address the impact of dapagliflozin on cardiovascular risk factors and common microangiopathic complications such as kidney disease and retinopathy in patients with T2DM.

The relationship between tumor cell ability to assemble mitochondrial supercomplexes, tumorigenesis and metastasis has not been studied thoroughly. The mitochondrial and metabolic differences between L929dt cells, which lost matrix attachment and MHC-I expression, and their parental cell line L929, were analyzed.

Role of Exosomes in the Regulation of T-cell Mediated Immune Responses and in Autoimmune Disease.

T-cell mediated immune responses should be regulated to avoid the development of autoimmune or chronic inflammatory diseases. Several mechanisms have been described to regulate this process, namely death of overactivated T cells by cytokine deprivation, suppression by T regulatory cells (Treg), induction of expression of immune checkpoint molecules such as CTLA-4 and PD-1, or activation-induced cell death (AICD). In addition, activated T cells release membrane microvesicles called exosomes during these regulatory processes.

Trochanteric hip fracture during cardioversion therapy. A case report.

Introduction: Trochanteric hip fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis are commonly caused by low energy trauma. The cardioversion therapy is an extremely rare cause of this type of fracture.

Pharmacist-led medication reconciliation to reduce discrepancies in transitions of care in Spain.

Background: Medication errors are one of the main causes of morbidity amongst hospital inpatients. More than half of medication errors occur at 'interfaces of care', when patients are discharged or transferred to the care of another physician. Medication reconciliation is the process of reviewing patients' complete previous medication regimen, comparing it with current prescriptions, and analysing and resolving any discrepancies that the pharmacist does not believe to be intentional (unjustified discrepancies).
