To evaluate trends in botulinum toxin (BTX) industry payments to physicians. Cross-sectional analysis of nonroyalty, BTX-specific payments made by Allergan (Botox), Ipsen (Dysport), and Merz (Xeomin) to physicians using the 2016-2020 Open Payments Database. Between 2016 and 2020, >$27 million in payments was made for BTX-related activities to dermatologists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists, and plastic surgeons, with payments ranging from $3.

Although increased incidence and mortality rates of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions in AI populations are well documented, few studies address factors contributing to these differential outcomes. We conducted a cross-sectional study of US states with AI areas that either met the population threshold for the American Community Survey annual estimate or annual supplemental estimate.

The co-chaperone Bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) is a central node in protein quality control in the heart. In humans and animal models, decreased BAG3 expression is associated with cardiac dysfunction and dilated cardiomyopathy. Although previous studies focused on BAG3 in cardiomyocytes, cardiac fibroblasts are also critical drivers of pathologic remodeling.

Objective: Cerebral vasospasm and the resultant delayed cerebral infarction is a significant source of mortality following aneurysmal SAH. Vasospasm is currently detected using invasive or expensive imaging at regular intervals in patients following SAH, thus posing a risk of complications following the procedure and financial burden on these patients. Currently, there is no blood-based test to detect vasospasm.

Department of Urology, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL 60612, United States.
Background: The cavernous nerve (CN) is frequently damaged in prostatectomy and diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), initiating changes in penile morphology including an acute and intense phase of apoptosis in penile smooth muscle and increased collagen, which alter penile architecture and make corpora cavernosa smooth muscle less able to relax in response to neurotransmitters, resulting in ED.
Aim: Sonic hedgehog (SHH) is a critical regulator of penile smooth muscle, and SHH treatment suppresses penile remodeling after CN injury through an unknown mechanism; we examine if part of the mechanism of how SHH preserves smooth muscle after CN injury involves bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and gremlin1 (GREM1).
Methods: Primary cultures of smooth muscle cells were established from prostatectomy, diabetic, hypertension and Peyronie's (control) (N = 18) patients.

Background: Cavernous nerve (CN) injury, caused by prostatectomy and diabetes, initiates a remodeling process (smooth muscle apoptosis and increased collagen) in the corpora cavernosa of the penis of patients and animal models that is an underlying cause of erectile dysfunction (ED), and the Sonic hedgehog (SHH) pathway plays an essential role in the response of the penis to denervation, as collagen increases with SHH inhibition and decreases with SHH treatment.
Aim: We examined if part of the mechanism of how SHH prevents penile remodeling and increased collagen with CN injury involves bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and gremlin1 (GREM1) and examined the relationship between SHH, BMP4, GREM1, and collagen in penis of ED patients and rat models of CN injury, SHH inhibition, and SHH, BMP4, and GREM1 treatment.
Methods: Corpora cavernosa of Peyronie's disease (control), prostatectomy, and diabetic ED patients were obtained (N = 30).

Fracture-related infections are a challenging complication in orthopedic trauma that often necessitates multiple surgeries. Early administration of systemic antibiotics and surgical intervention remains the gold standard of care, but despite these measures, treatment failures can be as high as 35%. For these reasons, the introduction of local antibiotics at the site of at-risk fractures has increased over the past decade.

Background: The relationship between psoriasis and complications after primary TKA is not well defined. Current studies are limited to small, single-center studies evaluating fewer than 150 patients with psoriasis, with some studies reporting an increased risk of surgical site infection (SSI) and another reporting no associated risk. There is a need to reevaluate the risk of psoriasis and postoperative complications, including SSI, to better risk-stratify and guide practice in this patient population.

Purpose: Radial dysplasia, also termed radial club hand is an abnormality along the longitudinal axis of the hand characterized by hypoplasia or aplasia of radial structures. Surgery that centralize the wrist on the distal end of the ulna gives quite good results in terms of anatomical recovery but affecting range of motion of the wrist and fingers, limbs length. We conducted this study to evaluate the outcome of serial casting followed by centralization at our institution.

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is typically described as a peripheral nerve disorder in which exaggerated allodynia and hyperalgesia follow a minor injury. Some researchers propose a central mechanism, although current evidence is lacking.
Observations: A 14-year-old female presented with classic CRPS symptoms of left upper-extremity weakness and hyperalgesia after a bout of sharp pain in her thumb while shoveling snow.

Purpose: Right heart catheterization (RHC) is the gold standard for the assessment of pulmonary artery systolic pressures (PASP). Despite high utilization of echocardiography for the non-invasive assessment of PASP, the data comparing real-time non-invasive echocardiographic PASP with invasive PASP is limited. Furthermore, evidence regarding the utility and diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound enhancing agents (UEA) for non-invasive PASP assessment is lacking.

Background: There is a lack of consensus regarding the effectiveness of salivary bypass tubes during total pharyngectomy reconstruction to prevent pharyngocutaneous fistula or pharyngoesophageal stricture.
Methods: Our study examined tubed free flap reconstruction outcomes for total pharyngectomy defects over 11 years at a single tertiary referral center. We compared postoperative fistula and stricture rates between two groups: those with salivary bypass tubes inserted during reconstruction and those without.

Background: One of the most serious complications after primary or revision lower extremity total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is venous thromboembolism disease (VTE). Identifying patients at high risk for VTE allows tailoring of prophylactic anticoagulation regimens to those most vulnerable. This study aimed to identify risk factors for VTE in primary and revision lower extremity TJA.

For patients with locoregionally confined pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), margin-negative surgical resection is the only known curative treatment; however, the majority of patients are not operable candidates at initial diagnosis. Among patients with resectable disease who undergo surgery alone, the 5-year survival remains poor. Adjuvant therapies, including systemic therapy or chemoradiation, are utilized as they improve locoregional control and overall survival.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of oral health status and swallowing function with cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older adults from Changsha, Hunan Province, China.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed the data of 215 participants aged ≥ 50 years which were retrieved from the Xiangya and Panasonic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) Study, a community-based study conducted among the residents of the urban areas of Hunan province in China. Demographic information of all participants was collected.
The field of pathology is facing an inflection point where the demand for pathology services is not being met by a corresponding rise in recruitment into the field. Many of the myths about the field of pathology have been dispelled elsewhere, but there have not been many formal accounts of the experience medical students' face when finding their path to pathology. Because of challenges in the visibility of pathology as a specialty and not simply a subject required for United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, students tend to fall into one of two categories: early differentiators or late discoverers.

Background: Nurses and other first responders are at high risk of exposure to the SARS-CoV2 virus, and many have developed severe COVID-19 infection. A better understanding of the factors that increase the risk of infection after exposure to the virus could help to address this. Although several risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension have been associated with an increased risk of infection, many first responders develop severe COVID-19 without established risk factors.
