Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses three cases of high-grade gliomas with O-Methylguanine-DNA Methyl-transferase (MGMT) methylation, highlighting distant recurrences despite initial successful treatment using the Stupp protocol.* -
  • All patients showed stable conditions at the original tumor site when distant recurrences occurred, suggesting effective local control, but ultimately faced poor outcomes after the metastasis.* -
  • One case involved Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), which revealed a high tumor mutational burden in the recurrent tumor, emphasizing the need to identify risk factors and correlations for more effective treatment strategies to reduce distant recurrences.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the increasing demand for vascular surgeons in the U.S. and emphasizes the essential role of international medical graduates (IMGs) in fulfilling healthcare needs and enhancing academic research in the field.
  • It compares academic profiles and funding support between IMG and U.S. medical graduate (USMG) vascular surgeons, revealing that while research productivity is similar, IMGs tend to have a higher percentage of first or senior-authored publications.
  • The findings show some disparities, such as a lower representation of IMGs in departments chaired by USMGs, and highlight the importance of both groups in the academic vascular surgery landscape.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting is widely used in refractory idiopathic intracranial hypotension (IIH). Although multiple reviews have assessed its efficacy compared with other surgical treatments, there is no detailed analysis that evaluates the clinical outcomes after CSF shunting.

Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis of the clinical impact of CSF shunting for refractory IIH and use this in conjunction with existing information on other treatment modalities to develop a modern management protocol.

Purpose: At present, perineural invasion is used as a histologic indicator of aggressive salivary gland disease. In other head and neck malignancies, perineural invasion impacts staging of cancer lesions and therefore affects treatment options.

Objective: To compare survival outcomes in primary parotid malignancies with and without perineural invasion.

One Dose Versus Two Doses of Intravenous Tranexamic Acid in Total Joint Arthroplasty.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

June 2021

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Loyola University Medical Center Stritch School of Medicine (Dr. Golz, Ms. Yee, Dr. Davis, and Dr. Brown), and the Department of Public Health Sciences, Loyola University Medical Center, Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health (Dr. Adams), Maywood, IL.

Introduction: Despite its widespread use, a single formulation or dosing regimen of tranexamic acid (TXA) has not been universally agreed on for total joint arthroplasty. The purpose of this study is to compare previously uninvestigated single-dose and two-dose regimens in postoperative hemoglobin level and secondary outcomes within 30 days of surgery.

Methods: A retrospective search of our institution's database of patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty and primary total hip arthroplasty between January 1, 2017, and July 1, 2019, was performed.

Improving Nutritional Support of Burn Service Patients by Increasing the Number of Days When 100% of Prescribed Formula Is Given.

J Burn Care Res

July 2018

From the *Loyola University Health System Burn Center and Burn & Shock Trauma Research Institute, Maywood, IL; and † Department of Surgery, Loyola University Medical Center Stritch School of Medicine.

The tumor microenvironment.

Surg Oncol

September 2012

Department of Surgery, Oncology Institute, Loyola University Medical Center Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, IL 60153, USA.

The concept of the tumor microenvironment, developed from Paget's "seed and soil" theory is made up of the cancer cells, the stromal tissue, and the extracellular matrix. In this mini-review, each of the components of this dynamic network will be examined.
