September 1996

Fleischman Unit for the Study of Disability, Lowenstein Hospital-Rehabilitation Centre, Raanana, Israel.

A community-oriented programme for rehabilitation of persons with arthritis is described. It combines an 8-week ambulatory rehabilitation course (including patient education) at a rehabilitation institution, with long-term self-rehabilitation (at patients' homes), supervised by primary-care nurses. Sixty persons (mean age 54; 80% females) with a 13-year average duration of arthritis, were suffering pain, physical limitations, difficulties in social activities, tension and a tendency to depression.

Treatment with beta-blockers affects oxygen metabolism and lipolysis during physical exertion. Together with possible central nervous system effects, this may impair the work capacity of treated hypertensive subjects. In a study of 1619 male employees, aged 45-64 years, mean resting and ambulatory heart rate (HR) and complaints of fatigue were compared between hypertensive workers treated with beta-blockers and untreated hypertensives and normotensives under low and high workload conditions.

Evidence from survey-based studies suggests that monotonous work increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). In this study of 1944 male and 832 female blue-collar workers aged 20-64 yr, we examined the association of CHD risk factors with two distinct objective work conditions--repetitive work (3 levels) and work underload-compared to varied work. After controlling for shift work, high ambient noise exposure and four other possible confounders, repetitive work was positively associated with both blood pressure and serum lipid levels in women, and with blood pressure in men.

Applying a model of saccadic prediction to patients' saccadic eye movements.

Brain Behav Evol

September 1989

Occupational Health and Rehabilitation Institute, Lowenstein Hospital, Raanana, Israel.

A mathematical model of eye tracking of periodic square wave target motion has previously been proposed. In this work the model was further studied with regard to saccadic response time to symmetrical square wave target motion in 6 patients with unilateral parietal lesions following cerebrovascular accidents. Three types of saccadic response time were noted.
