Intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the most fatal forms of brain injury that is a common complication of premature infants. However, the therapy of this type of hemorrhage is limited, and new strategies are needed to reduce hematoma expansion. Here we show that the meningeal lymphatics is a pathway to remove red blood cells from the brain's ventricular system of male human, adult and newborn rodents and is a target for non-invasive transcranial near infrared photobiomodulation.

Over sixty years, laser technologies have undergone a technological revolution and become one of the main tools in biomedicine, particularly in neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. Glioblastoma is the most lethal form of brain cancer, with very limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. In this study on rats, we demonstrate that glioblastoma (GBM) growth can be suppressed by photosensitizer-free laser treatment (PS-free-LT) using a quantum-dot-based 1267 nm laser diode.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are emerging as a near-room-temperature alternative to superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for magnetoencephalography (MEG). In contrast to SQUIDs, OPMs can be placed in a close proximity to subject's scalp potentially increasing the signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution of MEG. However, experimental demonstrations of these suggested benefits are still scarce.

Impact of low-level prenatal alcohol exposure and maternal stress on autonomic regulation.

Pediatr Res

January 2024

Substance Use Research and Education (SURE) Center, College of Pharmacy, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, Mexico.

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) impacts the neurodevelopment of the fetus, including the infant's ability to self-regulate. Heart rate variability (HRV), that is, the beat-to-beat variability in heart rate, is a non-invasive measurement that can indicate autonomic nervous system (ANS) function/dysfunction.

Methods: The study consisted of a subset of our ENRICH-2 cohort: 80 participants (32 PAE and 48 Controls) who had completed three visits during pregnancy.

Introduction: The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been examined in animal models and humans. The current study extends the prior literature by quantifying differences in brain structure for individuals with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) compared to typically developing controls, as well as examining FASD subtypes. We hypothesized the FASD group would reveal smaller brain volume, reduced cortical thickness, and reduced surface area compared to controls, with the partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)/fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) subtypes showing the largest effects and the PAE/alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) subtype revealing intermediate effects.

Maternal exposure to metal components of PM and low birth weight in New Mexico, USA.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

September 2023

Department of Geography & Environmental Studies, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, 87131, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Infants with low birth weight (LBW) face higher health risks compared to normal weight infants, and existing studies often overlook the specific impacts of various components of particulate matter (PM) on LBW.
  • This research in New Mexico analyzed the link between maternal exposure to 10 metal components of PM and LBW, employing advanced statistical methods to assess data from 2012 to 2016.
  • The results indicated that increased maternal exposure to mercury and chromium significantly raised LBW rates, underscoring the need for further research on air pollution's effects on pregnancy outcomes, particularly in areas with elevated LBW rates like New Mexico.

Objective: Since the start of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, it has become clear that the brain is one of the main targets for acute and chronic damage. Although neurodegenerative changes have yet to be investigated, there is already a large body of data on damage to its fiber tracts. A mobile eye tracker is possibly one of the best tools to study such damage in a COVID hospital setting.

Article Synopsis
  • Adenovirus F41 is known for causing gastroenteritis but can also lead to severe infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
  • An adult patient with several underlying health issues, including cancer and liver disease, developed a severe disseminated adenovirus infection and showed detectable viral loads in stool, plasma, and urine.
  • Unfortunately, despite starting antiviral treatment, the patient's condition worsened rapidly, leading to his death just two days after treatment began.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and severe blood loss resulting in hemorrhagic shock (HS) are each leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and present additional treatment considerations when they are comorbid (TBI+HS) as a result of competing pathophysiological responses. The current study rigorously quantified injury biomechanics with high precision sensors and examined whether blood-based surrogate markers were altered in general trauma as well as post-neurotrauma. Eighty-nine sexually mature male and female Yucatan swine were subjected to a closed-head TBI+HS (40% of circulating blood volume;  = 68), HS only ( = 9), or sham trauma ( = 12).

A 5-year-old female Beagle Dog was euthanized following ten days of inappetence, lethargy, and pain in the left cervical region that was not responsive to steroids or antibiotics. At necropsy, there were multiple soft dark red to tan nodules throughout all lung lobes, abundant purulent subdural exudate over the right temporal lobe of the brain, and minimally enlarged submandibular and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. Impression smear of the subdural pus and histologic section of the lung and meninges demonstrated small aggregates of rod-shaped to filamentous bacteria often surrounded by Splendori-Hoeppli material.

Objectives: E-cigarettes are the most commonly used nicotine containing products among youth. In vitro studies support the potential for e-cigarettes to cause cellular stress in vivo; however, there have been no studies to address whether exposure to e-liquid aerosols can induce cell transformation, a process strongly associated with pre-malignancy. We examined whether weekly exposure of human bronchial epithelial cell (HBEC) lines to e-cigarette aerosols would induce transformation and concomitant changes in gene expression and promoter hypermethylation.

The progress in brain diseases treatment is limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which prevents delivery of the vast majority of drugs from the blood into the brain. In this study, we discover unknown phenomenon of opening of the BBBB (BBBO) by low-level laser treatment (LLLT, 1268 nm) in the mouse cortex. LLLT-BBBO is accompanied by activation of the brain drainage system contributing effective delivery of liposomes into glioblastoma (GBM).
