September 2024

Department of the Psychosomatic Medicine Unit, UCL NAMUR Godinne University Hospital, Louvain Catholic University, Rue Dr Gaston Therasse 1, 5530 Yvoir, Belgium,

Background: In liaison psychiatry, issues related to multiple substance use disorders are encountered, but systematic assessment and treatment protocols are lacking. The implementation of psychoeducation groups with earlier access could be one solution, but it raises the question of how to systematically approach psychoeducation for multiple substance use disorders.

Subject And Method: Based on a narrative review of multiple substance use disorders in liaison psychiatry and the proposed treatments, we aimed to identify the possible systematisation of standardised psychoeducation.

October 2023

Louvain Catholic University, Psychosomatic Medicine Unit, CHU UCL NAMUR Godinne University Hospital, Rue Dr Gaston Therasse 1, 5530 Yvoir, Belgium.

Background: Alcohol use disorder is insufficiently treated because it is poorly detected. Improved screening in general hospitals is a major issue in treatment organisation.

Subject And Method: Through a retrospective exploratory study based on a review of medical records over four years (2016-19) before the COVID pandemic, we recorded the number of liaison psychiatric referrals for alcohol use disorder and identified two indicators: follow-up care implemented and survival at three years.

Backround: Literature suggests that most people believe in free will and that this belief is associated with more prosocial behavior. However, with the advent of neuroscience, free will seems to have been progressively excluded from psychiatry. This paper is a narrative literature review of the ways in which mental health professionals' premises and beliefs in free will influence their clinical practice.

Studies have reported persistent symptoms in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 up to 6 months post-discharge; however, sequalae beyond 6 months are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the clinical status of COVID-19 patients one year after hospital discharge and describe the factors related to poor outcomes. We conducted a single-center, prospective, cohort study of patients in Le Havre hospital (France) between 1 March 2020 and 11 May 2020.

Objective: To simultaneously investigate the psychometric properties of three recently developed health literacy measurement scales throughout adolescence in the general population.

Methods: French versions of the Health Literacy for School-Aged Children (HLSAC, unidimensional) scale, the Health Literacy Assessment Scale for Adolescents (HAS-A, multidimensional) and the 16-item European Health Literacy Survey questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16, unidimensional) were completed by 1 444 adolescents in 8th, 9th, 11th grade in general school and 11-12th grade in vocational school. Psychometric properties were studied using confirmatory factor analysis, McDonald's omega coefficient and hypothesis testing.

The current gold-standard treatment for COVID-19-related hypoxemic respiratory failure is invasive mechanical ventilation. However, do not intubate orders (DNI), prevent the use of this treatment in some cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate if non-invasive ventilatory supports can provide a good therapeutic alternative to invasive ventilation in patients with severe COVID-19 infection and a DNI.

Background: Functional exercise capacity assessment is recommended in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a valid evaluation of exercise capacity but can be technically complex. Inversely, the sit-to-stand test (STST) is a simple method to evaluate exercise capacity, and is validated in healthy children and adults with CF.

Background: Little interest has been paid to expiratory muscle strength, and the impact of expiratory muscle weakness on critical outcomes is not known. Very few studies assessed the relationship between maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) and critical outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between MEP and critical outcomes.

November 2020

Research and Clinical Experimentation Institute (IREC), Pulmonology, ORL and Dermatology, Louvain Catholic University, Brussels1200, Belgium; Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Saint-Luc University Clinics, Brussels1200, Belgium.

Accurate testing of muscle function is essential in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, PEDro, ScienceDirect and Web of Science according to PRISMA and COSMIN guidelines from inception to September 2019 to investigate the clinimetric properties of muscle tests in individuals with CF. The search identified 37 studies (1310 individuals) and 34 different muscle tests.

Background: The relationship between muscle function in critically ill patients assessed using bedside techniques and clinical outcomes has not been systematically described. We aimed to evaluate the association between muscle weakness assessed by bedside evaluation and mortality or weaning from mechanical ventilation, and the capacity of each evaluation tool to predict outcomes.

Methods: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Science Direct) were searched from January 2000 to December 2018.

Objective: Health care workers (HCWs) in contact with patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD) are exposed to a risk of viral contamination. Fomites contaminated with the patient's blood or body fluids represents this risk. Our study aims to detect Ebola virus (EBOV) RNA within the high- and low-risk areas of an Ebola treatment unit (ETU) located in inland Guinea during the 2014-2015 West African Ebola epidemics.
