Article Synopsis
  • This study presents a new technique for placing Crawford bicanalicular stents in children to treat congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, which simplifies in-office removal.
  • It evaluated the outcomes of 54 patients aged 5 and under who underwent this procedure between 2004 and 2020, focusing on various metrics like extrusion and recurrence rates.
  • Results indicated a 30.3% extrusion rate and low recurrence (5.4%) and operative room removal rates (3.6%), showing the method's effectiveness compared to other existing techniques.

Purpose: Computed tomography (CT) coronary angiography performed on a detector-based spectral scanner helps more closely approximate severity of stenosis with nuclear medicine and cardiac catheterization tests compared with single-energy CT (SECT) in patients with an original CAD-RADS score of 3 and higher.

Methods: This retrospective trial was conducted between January 2017 and December 2019 and included 52 patients with a CAD-RADS score of 3 and higher. Two reading sessions were performed 6 weeks apart.

Study Objective: Indications for computed tomography (CT) in children with minor head injury remain controversial. The objective of this preliminary study is to determine whether a clinical decision rule developed for adults could be used in children aged 5 years and older.

Methods: A prospective questionnaire was completed on all patients who were aged 5 to 17 years with major mechanisms of injury resulting in minor head injury (defined as normal Glasgow Coma Scale or modified coma scale in infants, plus normal brief neurologic examination) and loss of consciousness.

The surgical treatment for cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) fistulas provides closure of the bone and dural defects and prevents the recurrence of brain herniation and CSF fistula. The two main approaches used are the transmastoid and middle fossa ones. The authors review the results of performing a modified middle fossa approach with a vascularized temporalis muscle flap to create a barrier between the repaired dural and bone defects.

Occupation-related burn injuries.

J Burn Care Rehabil

December 2000

Department of Surgery, Louisiana State University at New Orleans, 70112, USA.

Unlike household burn injuries, the characteristics of burn injuries in the workplace have not been well described. In an effort to understand the causes and effects of occupation-related burn injuries and to aid in prevention, we sought to describe work-related burn injuries by frequency, burn type, age of the patients, body parts burned, and occupation of the patients. This was a statewide, cross-sectional study of all burns that occurred in the workplace during 1994.

Tumors of the scapula are an unusual clinical challenge. Partial or complete resection of the scapula, with its attached musculoaponeurotic tissue, is a seldom used technique for the treatment of primary bone and soft tissue tumors, as well as selected metastatic involvement of the scapula. Scapulectomy may allow wide margins of resection without amputation.

Congenital duplication of a gallbladder is a rare anatomic malformation. This malformation is rarely diagnosed preoperatively and usually is discovered during the course of cholecystectomy. Whether discovered preoperatively or intraoperatively, biliary anatomy should be assessed, then cholecystectomy should be performed on both gallbladders.
