The anatomy of the avian lower respiratory system includes a complex interaction between air-filled pulmonary tissues, pulmonary air sacs, and much of the postcranial skeleton. Hypotheses related to the function and phylogenetic provenance of these respiratory structures have been posed based on extensive interspecific descriptions for an array of taxa. By contrast, intraspecific descriptions of anatomical variation for these features are much more limited, particularly for skeletal pneumatization, and are essential to establish a baseline for evaluating interspecific variation.

During weight loss, reductions in body mass are commonly described using molecular body components (eg, fat mass and fat-free mass [FFM]) or tissues and organs (eg, adipose tissue and skeletal muscle). While often conflated, distinctions between body components established by different levels of the 5-level model of body composition-which partitions body mass according to the atomic, molecular, cellular, tissue/organ, or whole-body level-are essential to recall when interpreting the composition of weight loss. A contemporary area of clinical and research interest that demonstrates the importance of these concepts is the discussion surrounding body composition changes with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA), particularly in regard to changes in FFM and skeletal muscle mass.

Fungus-farming ants cultivate multiple lineages of fungi for food, but, because fungal cultivar relationships are largely unresolved, the history of fungus-ant coevolution remains poorly known. We designed probes targeting >2000 gene regions to generate a dated evolutionary tree for 475 fungi and combined it with a similarly generated tree for 276 ants. We found that fungus-ant agriculture originated ~66 million years ago when the end-of-Cretaceous asteroid impact temporarily interrupted photosynthesis, causing global mass extinctions but favoring the proliferation of fungi.

In the proximal tubules of the kidney, angiotensin II (ANG II) binds and activates ANG II type 1 (AT) receptors to stimulate proximal tubule Na reabsorption, whereas atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) binds and activates natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR) to inhibit ANG II-induced proximal tubule Na reabsorption. These two vasoactive systems play important counteracting roles to control Na reabsorption in the proximal tubules and help maintain blood pressure homeostasis. However, how AT and NPR receptors interact in the proximal tubules and whether natriuretic effects of NPR receptor activation by ANP may be potentiated by deletion of AT (AT) receptors selectively in the proximal tubules have not been studied previously.

The plant pathogenic bacterium Burkholderia glumae causes bacterial panicle blight (BPB) in rice-growing areas worldwide. It has been widely accepted that an acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-type quorum sensing (QS) system encoded by tofI and tofR genes (TofIR QS) is a key regulatory mechanism underlying the bacterial pathogenesis of B. glumae.

Large-scale simulations of light-matter interaction in natural photosynthetic antenna complexes containing more than one hundred thousands of chlorophyll molecules, comparable with natural size, have been performed. Photosynthetic antenna complexes present in Green sulfur bacteria and Purple bacteria have been analyzed using a radiative non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, well-known in the field of quantum optics, instead of the widely used dipole-dipole Frenkel Hamiltonian. This approach allows us to study ensembles of emitters beyond the small volume limit (system size much smaller than the absorbed wavelength), where the Frenkel Hamiltonian fails.

Interferon-stimulated gene-15 (ISG15) is an interferon-induced protein with two ubiquitin-like (Ubl) domains linked by a short peptide chain and is a conjugated protein of the ISGylation system. Similar to ubiquitin and other Ubls, ISG15 is ligated to its target proteins through a series of E1, E2, and E3 enzymes known as Uba7, Ube2L6/UbcH8, and HERC5, respectively. Ube2L6/UbcH8 plays a central role in ISGylation, underscoring it as an important drug target for boosting innate antiviral immunity.

In a genome-wide association study involving 269 cultivated and wild soybean accessions, potential salt tolerance donors were identified along with significant markers and candidate genes, such as GmKUP6 and GmWRKY33. Salt stress remains a significant challenge in agricultural systems, notably impacting soybean productivity worldwide. A comprehensive genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to elucidate the genetic underpinnings of salt tolerance and identify novel source of salt tolerance among soybean genotypes.

Quantum mechanics places noise limits and sensitivity restrictions on physical measurements. The balance between unwanted backaction and the precision of optical measurements imposes a standard quantum limit (SQL) on interferometric systems. In order to realize a sensitivity below the SQL, it is necessary to leverage a backaction evading measurement technique, reduce thermal noise to below the level of backaction, and exploit cancellations of any excess noise contributions at the detector.
