Background: Community health workers (CHWs) can support patient engagement in care for a variety of health conditions, including HIV. This paper reports on the experiences of HIV clinics and health departments that integrated CHWs into their health systems as part of a capacity-building initiative to address HIV-related disparities in the United States.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants (n = 14) in two Ryan White HIV/AIDS program jurisdictions: Mississippi (jurisdiction covers the entire state) and the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Premise: The use of hybrid breeding systems to increase crop yields has been the cornerstone of modern agriculture and is exemplified in the breeding and improvement of cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus). However, it is poorly understood what effect supporting separate breeding pools in such systems, combined with continued selection for yield, may have on leaf ecophysiology and specialized metabolite variation.
Methods: We analyzed 288 lines of cultivated H.

Lysine deacetylases (KDACs or HDACs) are metal-dependent enzymes that regulate lysine acetylation, a post-translational modification that is present on thousands of human proteins, essential for many cellular processes, and often misregulated in diseases. The selective inhibition of KDACs would allow for understanding of the biological roles of individual KDACs and therapeutic targeting of individual enzymes. Recent studies have suggested that purportedly specific KDAC inhibitors have significant off-target binding, but the biological consequences of off-target binding were not evaluated.

Introduction: Accurate assessment of alcohol use informs prevention and management of liver disease. We examined whether phosphatidylethanol (PEth, an alcohol metabolite) blood concentrations are associated with liver fibrosis risk independently of self-reported alcohol use, among persons with and without HIV.
Methods: We pooled individual-level data from 12 studies from the United States, Russia, Uganda, and South Africa with PEth, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C), and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) measurements.

Objectives: This study investigated whether honor ideology, or a belief that one's reputation must be defended at all costs, is related to firearms ownership in soldiers.
Methods: N=301 active-duty soldiers completed online self-report measures in this cross-sectional study.
Results: Honor ideology was higher in soldiers who privately own a firearm compared with those who do not currently own and do not plan to after military separation.

Menopause is characterized by the cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. In this narrative review, we describe the transitional stages of menopause, clinical presentation, pharmacological management of symptoms, and effects on fluctuating hormone levels. To standardize the stages of menopause, the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop + 10 (STRAW+10) system was designed with five distinct categories corresponding to symptom presentation and numerical years.

Background: Extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) can inhibit TGFβ activation, but its antifibrotic action remains largely unknown. This study aims to investigate ECM1 function and its physical interaction with the profibrotic connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in fibrosis and ductular reaction (DR).
Methods: Ecm1 knockouts or animals that ectopically expressed this gene were subjected to induction of liver fibrosis and DR by feeding 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC) or α-naphthyl-isothiocyanate (ANIT).

The development of integrated biorefineries and the greater utilization of biomass resources to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-derived products require research emphasis not just on conversion strategies but also on improving separations associated with biorefining. A significant roadblock towards developing biorefineries is the lack of effective separation techniques evidenced by the relative deficiency of literature in this area. Additionally, high conversion yields may only be realized if effective separations generate feedstock of sufficient purity - this makes research into biomass conversion strategies all the more critical.

Background & Aims: Despite a high prevalence of risk factors associated with hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection among safety-net populations, data evaluating HDV testing and prevalence are limited. We aim to evaluate HDV testing practices and HDV prevalence among an ethnically diverse, multi-center cohort of safety-net patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB).
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 13,218 patients with CHB (54.

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) is a mosquito-borne arbovirus (genus , family ) that has re-emerged in South America in late 2023, causing severe disease in both horses and humans after a nearly 40-year intermission period. We here describe the virological, serological, pathological, and molecular features of WEEV infection in horses during the 2023-2024 outbreak in Argentina. WEEV-infected horses developed neurological signs with mild to severe encephalitis associated with minimal to abundant WEEV-infected cells, as demonstrated by WEEV-specific in situ hybridization.

Impairments in synaptic dynamics and stability are observed both in neurodegenerative disorders and in the healthy aging cortex, which exhibits elevated dendritic spine turnover and decreased long-term stability of excitatory connections at baseline, as well as an altered response to plasticity induction. In addition to the discrete gain and loss of synapses, spines also change in size and strength both during learning and in the absence of neural activity, and synaptic volume has been associated with stability and incorporation into memory traces. Furthermore, intrinsic dynamics, an apparently stochastic component of spine volume changes, may serve as a homeostatic mechanism to prevent stabilization of superfluous connections.

Objective: The profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap has gained popularity in head and neck reconstruction with a favorable donor site providing a relatively hidden scar and the ability to harvest a large amount of pliable tissue with consistent vascular anatomy. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this PAP flap in head and neck reconstruction.

Objectives: For prostate cancer (PCa), hundreds of risk variants have been identified. It remains unknown whether the polygenic risk score (PRS) that combines the effects of these variants is also a sufficiently informative metric with relevance to the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis in prostate. We aimed to understand the biological basis of PRS and racial disparities in the cancer.

Personalized healthcare is becoming increasingly popular given the vast heterogeneity in disease manifestation between individuals. Many commonly encountered diseases within cardiology are multifactorial in nature and disease progression and response is often variable due to environmental and genetic factors influencing disease states. This makes accurate early identification and primary prevention difficult in certain populations, especially young patients with limited Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) risk factors.

We share experiences in advocating to defend in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Virginia, Missouri, and Mississippi; provide historical context on the "Personhood" anti-IVF movement; and discuss why "embryo donation" is a more accurate term than "embryo adoption." Some individuals and communities have a deeply held belief that a fertilized oocyte is a very early human life, and we will likely never change their minds. In the fertility community, most providers consider embryos to be an important part of the continuum between gametes (sperm and eggs) to live birth.

Background: Low-to-zero fluoroscopic navigation systems lower radiation exposure which improves health outcomes. Conventional x-ray fluoroscopy (CF) has long been the standard to guide to catheter location for cardiac ablation. With advancements in technology, alternative safety navigation systems have been developed.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are a recently recognized component of particulate matter that cause respiratory and cardiovascular toxicity. The mechanism of EPFR toxicity appears to be related to their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative damage. EPFRs were shown to affect P450 function, inducing the expression of some forms through the Ah receptor.

Background: Whole food plant-based diet (WFPBD), minimally processed foods with limited consumption of animal products, is associated with improved health outcomes. The benefits of WFPBD are underexplored in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The primary objective of this analysis is to evaluate the association between WFPBD on glycemia in individuals with T1D.
