Clinical considerations in case selection for all-ceramic fixed partial dentures.

Department of Prosthodontics, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, Box 222, 1100 Florida Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70119, USA.

All-ceramic systems have been utilized for fixed partial dentures (FPDs) to replace a missing tooth since the early 1990s. Clinical studies that assess the long-term outcome of both anterior and posterior three-unit all-ceramic FPDs are required to determine whether they can serve as a viable treatment option for functional and aesthetic tooth replacement. This article discusses the evolution and development of all-ceramic systems for FPDs as well as the clinical and laboratory considerations for treating patients using these restorations.

Delivering a fixed restoration: a clinical rationale for creating a routine sequence.

Pract Proced Aesthet Dent

November 2002

Department of Prosthodontics, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The proper sequence of seating a restoration starts with the evaluation of the shade match. Clinical procedures then follow this sequence: adjustment of proximal contact points, assessment of fit, and occlusal adjustment. Attempts to alter this sequence may cause unnecessary occlusal adjustments and an end result of a hypooccluded restoration.

Effect of over- and underexposure on the sharpness of the image of a marker in computer-assisted dental implant tomography.

Dentomaxillofac Radiol

July 2002

Department of Oral Diagnosis, Medicine and Radiology, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, New Orleans, Louisiana 70119-2799, USA.

In dental implant tomography, a clinician typically makes several tomograms of cross-sectional and sagittal slices at and near the intended implantation site. The slice with the sharpest image of the metal marker is deemed to be the correct implantation site; the other slices with blurred images of the marker are those made either mesially or distally to the marker. However, if the images were over- or underexposed, the marker will be blurred on all the slices and a dentist may be wrongly accused of having placed a dental implant at an improper site with possible medico-legal ramifications.

Purpose: In this study, we determined the tissue thickness of healed subepithelial connective tissue grafts, the type of tissue present after healing, and the percentage of shrinkage of subepithelial connective tissue grafts over time in the facial aspect of the canine maxilla.

Materials And Methods: Four dogs each received 2 single-thickness subepithelial connective tissue grafts, 2 double-thickness grafts, and 2 sham-operated sites in the facial aspect of the maxilla bilaterally. The subepithelial connective tissue graft was harvested from the palate and included the periosteum.

The clinicopathologic features of 44 cases of cementoblastoma were analyzed and compared with those of 74 cases from the literature with special emphasis on the clinical behavior, treatment, and recurrence rate of these relatively rare benign odontogenic neoplasms. The cases in the current series were accessioned at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. Patient ages at diagnosis ranged from 8 years to 44 years, with a mean age of 20.

The semilunar flap technique for root coverage.

Atlas Oral Maxillofac Surg Clin North Am

September 1999

Department of Periodontics, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

The semilunar flap technique may be considered as a simple, minimally invasive option for coronally repositioning the receded free gingival margin on the facial aspects of natural teeth and implants. Judicious case selection and careful application of the described procedure may enhance the final esthetic outcome using this approach. Work is currently in progress by the authors to provide long-term evidence-based results using this technique, with future considerations including the application of recent advances in microsurgical instrumentation to facilitate surgical tissue management.

Background: Long-term evaluation of periodontal therapy is important for clinical decision making.

Methods: A synthetic cell-binding peptide (P-15) combined with anorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite bone matrix (ABM) was evaluated as a bone replacement graft in human periodontal osseous defects. Following initial preparation and reevaluation, flap surgery was performed.

Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, New Orleans, LA 70119-2799, USA.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the healing response with 3 different bone substitute materials in extraction sites in the dog.

Materials And Methods: Four dogs had their mandibular and maxillary premolars extracted atraumatically. The sites were immediately grafted with anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss, Osteohealth, Shirley, NY), Bone Source (Leibinger, Inc, Kalamazoo, MI), or Embarc (Lorenz Surgical, Jacksonville, FL), or left untreated as a control.

Background: Periodontal root coverage procedures to treat recession areas are indicated for unesthetic, exposed, and/or painful root surfaces. Many methods, most using autogenous soft tissue grafts, have been utilized, but with associated morbidity at the donor sites. An alternative donor material would reduce the morbidity and provide for sufficient available donor tissue.

Oral health is a significant issue for women because of its association with overall health and quality of life. July 2001

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, LSU Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA 70119, USA.

The term ductal papilloma is used to identify a group of 3 rare benign papillary salivary gland tumors known as inverted ductal papilloma, sialadenoma papilliferum, and intraductal papilloma. They represent adenomas with unique papillary features and arise from the salivary gland duct system. We describe the clinical and microscopic features of 19 new cases of ductal papillomas and combine them with 116 cases previously published in the English-language medical literature.
