This clinical report describes damage to a 1-piece zirconia abutment where both biological and mechanical complications developed, resulting in premature loss of the implant. Scanning electron microscopy showed significant damage to the internal connection of the implant. When using 1-piece zirconia abutments with a titanium internal connection, periodic recall and identification of wear is necessary, especially in patients with repeated screw loosening.

Expansion of the maxilla using a segmental Le Fort I osteotomy is a routine and commonly used procedure in the treatment of dentofacial deformities. Although orthognathic surgery has seen tremendous advancement in technology, including virtual surgical planning and customized hardware, some room for advancement exists in the maintenance of surgical maxillary expansion. Traditionally, this has been accomplished with retention of a maxillary occlusal splint 4 to 8 weeks postoperatively.

Background: Pedicle ossification is thought to arise from the residual perieosteum left along the pedicle during the fibula free flap (FFF) harvesting. Pedicle ossification in head and neck reconstruction can cause trismus, pain on mastication/turning the neck, or neck swelling.
Methods: Two patients reported in this article developed severe trismus within 6 months after mandibular reconstruction with FFF.

Functional reconstruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a controversial topic among oral and maxillofacial surgeons; this controversy becomes more complicated when one dives into the dilemma of the ideal reconstructive modality. TMJ defects might result from various etiologies, such as blunt or penetrating traumatic injuries, advanced degenerative joint disease, or various pathologic conditions, including benign and malignant conditions, that might arise from the TMJ or adjacent tissues. Reconstruction of the TMJ is vital because of its essential function in mastication, articulation, speech, and facial esthetics and symmetry.

Approaching patient care from a holistic perspective, incorporating not only the patient's medical and dental history but also psychosocial history, improves patient outcomes. Practitioners should be trained to provide this style of care through inclusive education, including training working on interprofessional teams. A component of this education must incorporate social determinants of health into the treatment plan.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB; OMIM #226600) is one of the most devastating subtypes of epidermolysis bullosa, a group of skin and mucous membrane blistering disorders often associated with extracutaneous manifestations. RDEB is caused by mutations in COL7A1, the gene encoding type VII collagen (C7), and to date over 700 different mutations in the 8835 nucleotides constituting the open reading frame or adjacent exon-intron boundaries of COL7A1 have been described. We used targeted next-generation sequencing to identify seven previously unreported mutations in a cohort of 17 Mexican patients who were diagnosed with RDEB based on clinical presentation and immunoepitope mapping.

Statement Of Problem: The development of polymer-based computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) milling bocks and the limited availability of independent studies on these materials make it pertinent to evaluate changes in their mechanical properties after simulated aging to identify strengths and limitations.
Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to measure the effect of thermocycling on the flexural properties of ceramic, resin, and resin-ceramic CAD-CAM materials.
Material And Methods: Studied materials included Lava Ultimate Restorative (LVU; 3M ESPE), Enamic (ENA; VITA Zahnfabrik), Vitablocs Mark II (VM2; VITA Zahnfabrik), and Paradigm MZ100 (MZ1; 3M ESPE).

Purpose: This manuscript presents evidence-based guidance on the use of vital pulp therapies for treatment of deep caries lesions in children. A guideline panel convened by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry formulated evidence-based recommendations on three vital pulp therapies: indirect pulp treatment (IPT; also known as indirect pulp cap), direct pulp cap (DPC), and pulpotomy.
Methods: The basis of the guideline's recommendations was evidence from "Primary Tooth Vital Pulp Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This case report aims to describe in detail a complication associated with resorption of regenerated bone following implant placement and ridge augmentation using recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in combination with allograft and xenograft. Bilateral maxillary sinus and ridge augmentation procedures were completed using rhBMP-2 combined with allograft and xenograft. Five months later, significant bone augmentation was achieved, which allowed for the placement of 4 implants.

Hereditary epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is associated with skin blistering and the development of chronic nonhealing wounds. Although clinical studies have shown that cell-based therapies improve wound healing, the recruitment of therapeutic cells to blistering skin and to more advanced skin lesions remains a challenge. Here, we analyzed cytokines and chemokines in blister fluids of patients affected by dystrophic, junctional, and simplex EB.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of a methacrylate resin dentin bonding agent to adhere to the dentin surfaces of prepared and conditioned root canals with either 32% phosphoric acid (PA) or 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA).
Methods: Prior to the application of the methacrylate resin, the root canals of 54 intact, caries-free, single- rooted, de-crowned, extracted human maxillary incisor and canine teeth were endodontically prepared and conditioned with either 32% PA or 17% EDTA or with distilled water as the unconditioned control. The resin-treated roots were cross-sectioned at three levels and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaged for circumferential views of the root canals at 60-90× magnification and site-specific views at 250× magnification, and then randomly coded for independent and blind evaluation by four calibrated examiners.

Zirconia has become one of the most popular materials in dentistry. New high-translucent zirconia ceramics have favorable optical properties and can be applied as monolithic full-contour restorations in various clinical indications for posterior and anterior teeth. However, having reliable cementation protocols is fundamental for clinical success of indirect ceramic dental restorations, including those made from zirconia materials.

The purpose of this report is to discuss the treatment of a patient with cyclic neutropenia. This patient presented with flared teeth, thin alveolar bone, and mobile teeth. A staged approach was used to remove her teeth, augment the bone, use immediate fixed provisional to determine the type of final prostheses, and ultimately to use cone-shaped overdenture attachments to retain her final prostheses.

Purpose: After implants are placed into mandibular molar sites, it is assumed that crestal bone width will not change considerably over time. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine crestal bone changes for implants placed into mandibular molar locations. The hypotheses for all groups (immediate, delayed, and grafted) were that no major changes in bone width of the posterior mandible would occur in the long term.

A Workshop of attendees was convened following the completion of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) symposium, "Beyond the Guidelines: Factors Affecting Behavior Guidance." The title of Workshop A was Guidelines/Revisions and charges were to review whether the current AAPD Behavior Management Guidelines were adequate to guide delivery of dental care for children with specific attention to their effectiveness and safety, the protection of the pediatric patient and dentist, and the newly revised Protective Stabilization guideline, considering the presentations during the symposium. Major themes emerged as areas for consideration in future revisions of the guidelines: 1) toxic stress and the culture of poverty; 2) behavior risk assessment; 3) contemporary knowledge of pain theory; 4) deferred treatment; 5) parental presence in the operatory and 6) current use of protective stabilization.
