In recent years, marijuana and vaping have acquired widespread popularity, with millions of people using them for a variety of reasons, including recreational purposes. However, these practices have often overlooked the implications on surgery and the preoperative anesthesia considerations. Marijuana can influence a patient's response to anesthesia, alter postoperative pain management, and increase the risk of complications, whereas vaping can have negative effects on the respiratory system and hinder the body's ability to recover after surgery.

Background: Neutrophil-mediated persistent inflammation and neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis) promote deep vein thrombosis (DVT). CD14, a co-receptor for toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), is actively synthesized by neutrophils, and the CD14/TLR4 signaling pathway has been implicated in proinflammatory cytokine overproduction and several aspects of thromboinflammation. The role of CD14 in the pathogenesis of DVT remains unclear.

As a human tumor virus, EBV is present as a latent infection in its associated malignancies where genetic and epigenetic changes have been shown to impede cellular differentiation and viral reactivation. We reported previously that levels of the Wnt signaling effector, lymphoid enhancer binding factor 1 (LEF1) increased following EBV epithelial infection and an epigenetic reprogramming event was maintained even after loss of the viral genome. Elevated LEF1 levels are also observed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Burkitt lymphoma.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) infect keratinocytes of stratified squamous epithelia, and persistent infection with high-risk HPV types, such as HPV16, may lead to the development of malignancies. HPV evades host immunity in part by linking its gene expression to the host differentiation program, and therefore relies on differentiation to complete its life cycle. Based on previous reports indicating that the HPV16 protein E5 is important in the late stages of the differentiation-dependent life cycle, we found that organotypic cultures harboring HPV16 genomes lacking E5 showed reduced markers of terminal differentiation compared to wild type HPV16-containing cultures.
