Traditionally, larger lesions of laryngeal verrucous carcinoma are treated with surgical excision, with definitive radiotherapy generally reserved for smaller lesions. However, data utilizing modern databases is limited.  The authors sought to assess, utilizing the National Cancer Database, whether overall survival for patients with laryngeal verrucous carcinoma was equivalent when treated with definitive radiotherapy versus definitive surgery.

Background: The evaluation of teens with self-harming thoughts (SHT) is a high-stakes task for physicians in community and emergency department (ED) settings. The lived experience of adolescents with stress and SHT provides an important source of insight for mental health professionals who evaluate and treat teens A snapshot of the lived experience of teens in northwest Louisiana was captured by the Step Forward Teen Advisory Council (TAC) in 2019. The TAC surveyed peers with the goal of identifying common stressors experienced by local teens in order to inform policy and practices in the local school system.

With technologies that have democratized the production and reproduction of information, a significant portion of daily interacted posts in social media has been infected by rumors. Despite the extensive research on rumor detection and verification, so far, the problem of calculating the spread power of rumors has not been considered. To address this research gap, the present study seeks a model to calculate the Spread Power of Rumor (SPR) as the function of content-based features in two categories: False Rumor (FR) and True Rumor (TR).

A migraine is a clinical diagnosis with a presentation of one or more severe unilateral or bilateral headache(s) often preceded by an aura and typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and/or phonophobia. This neurological disease is often debilitating and greatly affects the quality of life of those it inflicts. In fact, a recent study conducted by the Global Burden of Disease and published in The Lancet Neurology revealed that migraines ranked second to only back pain as the most disabling disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Migraine headaches are common and complex, causing severe unilateral pain often linked with sensitivity to light and sound, significantly affecting daily life and leading to high emergency room visits and economic costs.
  • Risk factors for migraines include genetics, gender, socioeconomics, and specific triggers such as stress, certain foods, and changes in sleep patterns.
  • Treatment options involve abortive medications like triptans and new alternatives like Zavegepant, focusing on blocking key pain-related pathways in the brain.

Doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiomyopathy constitutes dose-dependent cardiac toxicity, culminating in fatal heart failure progression. Cardiac toxicity limits effective and subsequent use of DOX in chemotherapy regimens in pediatric, adult, and recurrent cancer patients. DOX-induced profound alterations in mitochondrial morphology, dynamics, and defects in mitochondrial energy metabolism in the heart comprise key stressors in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity.

The role of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) in mitigating the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unknown. We interrogated the Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to study the association between AF-related adverse events and the use of GLP-1 RA and DPP-4i. A signal of disproportionate reporting of AF was detected with the DPP-4i group compared with all the other drugs in the FAERS database [ROR, 2.

Introduction: The endothelial glycocalyx regulates vascular permeability, inflammation, and coagulation, and acts as a mechanosensor. The loss of glycocalyx can cause endothelial injury and contribute to several microvascular complications and, therefore, may promote diabetic retinopathy. Studies have shown a partial loss of retinal glycocalyx in diabetes, but with few molecular details of the changes in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composition.

The role of previous life stress and trauma in addiction has been understudied and underappreciated. To date, much previous research has emphasized other aspects of the disease of addiction, including the reward-based neural circuitry. While previous research has offered tremendous value and shaped human understanding of addiction, an increased emphasis on the role of stress and trauma in addiction may provide new targets for therapeutic development.

Background: Several anti-cancer drugs have been linked to new onset atrial fibrillation (AF) but the true association of these drugs with AF is unknown. The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), a publicly available pharmacovigilance mechanism provided by the FDA, collects adverse event reports from the United States and other countries, thus providing real-world data.

Objectives: To identify anti-cancer drugs associated with AF using the FAERS database.

Lower circulating levels of glycine are consistently reported in association with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the causative role and therapeutic potential of glycine in atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of most CVDs, remain to be established. Here, following the identification of reduced circulating glycine in patients with significant coronary artery disease (sCAD), we investigated a causative role of glycine in atherosclerosis by modulating glycine availability in atheroprone mice. We further evaluated the atheroprotective potential of DT-109, a recently identified glycine-based compound with dual lipid/glucose-lowering properties.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is among the most aggressive of human cancers, and currently there are few effective treatments for most patients. YM155, first identified as a survivin inhibitor, was highlighted in a high-throughput screen performed by the National Cancer Institute, killing ATC cells in vitro and in vivo. However, there was no association between survivin expression and response to YM155 in clinical trials, and YM155 has been mostly abandoned for development despite favorable pharmacokinetic and toxicity profiles.

Increased neutrophil-endothelial binding and inflammatory responses are significant pathophysiological events in the maternal vascular system in preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder in human pregnancy. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and its soluble receptors (soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) and soluble gp130 (sgp130)) are critical inflammatory mediators. During pregnancy, maternal IL-6 and sgp130 levels were increased, but sIL-6R levels were decreased, in women with preeclampsia compared to normotensive pregnant women.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic, inflammatory, recurrent cutaneous disorder of the hair follicles, is debilitating and has substantial morbidity. Hidradenitis suppurativa-related pain has a profound effect on patient quality of life, yet at present, there are no established pain management algorithms. This comprehensive review provides an update on current treatment of HS-associated pain, including a summary of existing literature surrounding pharmacologic treatments of acute, perioperative, and chronic pain.
