Using a case control study design in patients with and without AF and a mouse model of CSE knockout (CSE-KO), we evaluated the role of HS in the etiology of AF.

Primary facial nerve paraganglioma: report and review of the literature.

Background: The objective of this study was to determine the advising and emergency medicine (EM) residency selection practices for special population applicant groups for whom traditional advice may not apply.

Methods: A survey was distributed on the Council of Residency Directors in EM and Clerkship Directors in EM Academy listservs. Multiple choice, Likert-type scale, and fill-in-the-blank questions addressed the average EM applicant and special population groups (osteopathic; international medical graduate (IMG); couples; at-risk; re-applicant; dual-accreditation applicant; and military).

Background The mutated α-B-Crystallin (CryAB) mouse model of desmin-related myopathy (DRM) shows an age-dependent onset of pathologic cardiac remodeling and progression of heart failure. CryAB expression in cardiomyocytes affects the mitochondrial spatial organization within the myofibrils, but the molecular perturbation within the mitochondria in the relation of the overall course of the proteotoxic disease remains unclear. Methamphetamine induces cardiomyopathy by Sigmar1 inhibition-dependent impairment of mitochondrial dynamics and function.

Methamphetamine-associated cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of death linked with illicit drug use. Here we show that Sigmar1 is a therapeutic target for methamphetamine-associated cardiomyopathy and defined the molecular mechanisms using autopsy samples of human hearts, and a mouse model of "binge and crash" methamphetamine administration. Sigmar1 expression is significantly decreased in the hearts of human methamphetamine users and those of "binge and crash" methamphetamine-treated mice.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally and is associated with a number of co-morbidities including sepsis and sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite thrombo-inflammation underlying these co-morbidities, its pathogenesis remains complicated and drug discovery programs aimed at reducing and resolving the detrimental effects remain a major therapeutic challenge. The objective of this study was to assess whether the anti-inflammatory pro-resolving protein Annexin A1 (AnxA1) was able to reduce inflammation-induced thrombosis and suppress platelet activation and thrombus formation in the cerebral microvasculature.

Chemical Architecture of Block Copolymers Differentially Abrogate Cardiotoxicity and Maintain the Anticancer Efficacy of Doxorubicin.

The molecular architecture of pH-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers, their self-assembly behavior to form nanoparticles (NPs), and doxorubicin (DOX)-loading technique govern the extent of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. We observed that the choice of pH-sensitive tertiary amines, surface charge, and DOX-loading techniques within the self-assembled NPs strongly influence the release and stimulation of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in primary cardiomyocytes. However, covalent conjugation of DOX to a pH-sensitive nanocarrier through a "conditionally unstable amide" linkage (PCPY-cDOX; PC = polycarbonate and PY = 2-pyrrolidine-1-yl-ethyl-amine) significantly reduced the cardiotoxicity of DOX in cardiomyocytes as compared to noncovalently encapsulated DOX NPs (PCPY-eDOX).

Association of sexually-transmitted infection and African-American race with Streptococcus agalactiae colonization in pregnancy.

Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a significant cause of neonatal infection, but the maternal risk factors for GBS colonization remain poorly defined. We hypothesized that there may be an association between antibiotic exposure during pregnancy and GBS colonization and/or the presence of inducible clindamycin resistance (iCLI-R) in GBS isolates from GBS-colonized pregnant women.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport including demographic and clinical data from 1513 pregnant women who were screened for GBS between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

Positive impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion on Louisiana women with breast cancer.

Background: Louisiana is one of the few Southern states that enacted the Medicaid expansion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). To the authors' knowledge, the issue of how this has affected the breast cancer landscape in Louisiana is unknown. The authors have postulated that ACA expansion had a positive impact for Louisiana women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Hexachlorobenzene, a pollutant in hypothyroidism and reproductive aberrations: a perceptive transgenerational study.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a widespread environmental pollutant, contributes to endocrine disruption resulting in hypothyroidism. We investigated the effect of chronic exposure of HCB to explore the functional interconnection between hypothyroidism and infertility. All observations were made through the F1 and F2 generations.
