During the binding and infection of monocytes, HCMV binds to at least two major cell surface receptors/receptor families: the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to initiate downstream signaling through the EGFR-PI3K pathway, and to β- and β-integrins to initiate downstream signaling through the integrin-c-Src pathway (Nogalski et al. PLoS Pathog 9:e1003463, 2013; Chan et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 106:22369-22374, 2009; Kim et al.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) can cause severe disease in the immunocompromised. One of the hallmarks of HCMV infection of a human host is the targeted infection of peripheral blood monocytes (but not other leukocyte populations) that in turn serve as the key cell type for hematogenous dissemination and the establishment of persistence following primary infection. Monocytes are also a key cell type associated with viral reactivation and spread following viral reactivation.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a betaherpesvirus with a global seroprevalence of 60-90%. HCMV is the leading cause of congenital infections and poses a great health risk to immunocompromised individuals. Although HCMV infection is typically asymptomatic in the immunocompetent population, infection can result in mononucleosis and has also been associated with the development of certain cancers, as well as chronic inflammatory diseases such as various cardiovascular diseases.

MiR-126-3p is a prototype of an endothelial miRNA and has protective effects on endothelial cells. However, little is known about the effects of miR-126-3p on placental trophoblasts. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that aberrant miR-126-3p expression is present in preeclamptic placenta which contributes to increased inflammatory response in trophoblasts.

Neutrophils play a crucial role in the intertwined processes of thrombosis and inflammation. An altered neutrophil phenotype may contribute to inadequate resolution, which is known to be a major pathophysiological contributor of thromboinflammatory conditions such as sickle cell disease (SCD). The endogenous protein annexin A1 (AnxA1) facilitates inflammation resolution via formyl peptide receptors (FPRs).

Oxidative stress drives the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia. In the cardiovascular system, cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) serves as the primary enzyme producing hydrogen sulfide (HS), a mammalian gasotransmitter that reduces oxidative stress. Using a case control study design in patients with and without AF and a mouse model of CSE knockout (CSE-KO), we evaluated the role of HS in the etiology of AF.

Xylenes are aromatic hydrocarbons used for industrial applications such as the production of petrochemicals and plastics. Acute xylene exposures can negatively impact health through neurotoxicity and irritation of respiratory and dermal tissues. We quantified urinary biomarkers of xylene exposure [2-methylhippuric acid (2MHA) and a mixture of 3- and 4-methylhippuric acids (34MH)] in a representative sample of the U.

Methamphetamine-associated cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of death linked with illicit drug use. Here we show that Sigmar1 is a therapeutic target for methamphetamine-associated cardiomyopathy and defined the molecular mechanisms using autopsy samples of human hearts, and a mouse model of "binge and crash" methamphetamine administration. Sigmar1 expression is significantly decreased in the hearts of human methamphetamine users and those of "binge and crash" methamphetamine-treated mice.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally and is associated with a number of co-morbidities including sepsis and sickle cell disease (SCD). Despite thrombo-inflammation underlying these co-morbidities, its pathogenesis remains complicated and drug discovery programs aimed at reducing and resolving the detrimental effects remain a major therapeutic challenge. The objective of this study was to assess whether the anti-inflammatory pro-resolving protein Annexin A1 (AnxA1) was able to reduce inflammation-induced thrombosis and suppress platelet activation and thrombus formation in the cerebral microvasculature.

The molecular architecture of pH-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers, their self-assembly behavior to form nanoparticles (NPs), and doxorubicin (DOX)-loading technique govern the extent of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. We observed that the choice of pH-sensitive tertiary amines, surface charge, and DOX-loading techniques within the self-assembled NPs strongly influence the release and stimulation of DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in primary cardiomyocytes. However, covalent conjugation of DOX to a pH-sensitive nanocarrier through a "conditionally unstable amide" linkage (PCPY-cDOX; PC = polycarbonate and PY = 2-pyrrolidine-1-yl-ethyl-amine) significantly reduced the cardiotoxicity of DOX in cardiomyocytes as compared to noncovalently encapsulated DOX NPs (PCPY-eDOX).

Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a significant cause of neonatal infection, but the maternal risk factors for GBS colonization remain poorly defined. We hypothesized that there may be an association between antibiotic exposure during pregnancy and GBS colonization and/or the presence of inducible clindamycin resistance (iCLI-R) in GBS isolates from GBS-colonized pregnant women.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Shreveport including demographic and clinical data from 1513 pregnant women who were screened for GBS between July 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
