Flares of this disease are often treated with topical corticosteroids; however, the use of these drugs can cause unwanted side effects, such as cutaneous atrophy and impaired wound healing. To minimize these common side effects, severe forms of this disease have been treated with topical calcineurin inhibitors, which previously had no known long-term side effects.
