Alcohol elicits a neuroimmune response in the brain contributing to the development and maintenance of alcohol use disorder (AUD). While pro-inflammatory mediators initiate and drive the neuroimmune response, anti-inflammatory mediators provide an important homeostatic mechanism to limit inflammation and prevent pathological damage. However, our understanding of the role of anti-inflammatory signaling on neuronal physiology in critical addiction-related brain regions and pathological alcohol-dependence induced behaviors is limited, precluding our ability to identify promising therapeutic targets.

Planning for and responding to disasters involves more than traditional emergency management; members of vulnerable populations should be included in the disaster response cycle. Nurses are key to employing culturally competent strategies with vulnerable populations during disasters, enhancing the access of these populations to care and reducing their health disparities.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine if the short-axis approach and long-axis approach to ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous access (USGPIV) differ in success rate, catheter insertion time, and number of needle sticks.
Methods: A convenience sample of emergency department patients aged 18 to 65 years with difficult IV access (2 or more failed landmark attempts) was prospectively randomized to short-axis or long-axis USGPIV. Time from skin puncture to catheter insertion (insertion time) and number of needle sticks were recorded.

Microvasculopathies of nephrosclerosis progress with age in contrasting patterns. Arterial intimal fibroplasia (R(r) and R(c), respectively, in small and large interlobular arteries) previously showed close linkages to hypertension and to "nephrosclerosis," defined by fibrous replacement of atrophied nephrons, whereas hyalinization of arterioles (Hy) failed to show consistent linkages. In this study, renal samples from seven populations, three newly assembled and four reassessed from archived data, were evaluated for R(r), R(c), and Hy in forensic autopsies of basal subjects (ie, those lacking conditions known to correlate with hypertension or nephrosclerosis, mostly deaths by violence).

Purpose: We evaluated the effects of the over expression of p27Kip1, a cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor and tumor suppressor protein, on the 786-0 human renal carcinoma cell line.
Materials And Methods: The recombinant adenovirus Adp27Kip1 was evaluated for the induction of p27 protein expression in 786-0 renal carcinoma cells. Expression time and optimal vector concentration were determined.
