Hyperaccumulators within the genus possess many promising genetic and metabolic adaptations that could be potentially exploited to support phytoremediation efforts and/or crop improvement and biofortification. Although hyperaccumulation is very common in this genus, individual species display specific traits as they can accumulate different elements (e.g.

Friction and wear characteristics play a critical role in the functionality and durability of prosthetic sockets, which are essential components in lower-limb prostheses. Traditionally, these sockets are manufactured from bulk polymers or composite materials reinforced with advanced carbon, glass, and Kevlar fibres. However, issues of accessibility, affordability, and sustainability remain, particularly in less-resourced regions.

Background: The I/D polymorphism has been suggested to be associated with multiple chronic diseases and sports modalities, which has public health implications for global populations and sport performance. This updated review aims to strengthen the association and identify sporting disciplines that are most influenced by the gene polymorphism using a meta-analysis approach.
Methods: Published studies on the association between the I/D polymorphism and elite endurance and power were collected until 15 June 2024.

: Reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability secondary to excess-superoxide-driven oxidative stress is central to endothelial dysfunction. Previous studies suggest that phenolic metabolites may improve NO bioavailability, yet limited research is available in response to an inflammatory mediator. Therefore, we assessed the effects of cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and its phenolic metabolites protocatechuic acid (PCA) and vanillic acid (VA) on NO bioavailability in a TNF-α induced inflammatory environment.

This study explores the enhancement of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix using calcium hydroxyapatite (cHAP) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) for developing composite scaffolds aimed at bone regeneration applications. The PLA composites were fabricated through solvent evaporation and melt extrusion and characterized by various techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical testing. The incorporation of cHAP and rGO significantly improved the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the PLA matrix.

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is an emerging tool for dietary counseling in athletes. This study aimed to explore blood glucose profiles in Para cyclists and evaluate CGM accuracy at rest and during exercise. Thirteen Para cyclists, comprising eight hand bikers and five cyclists, wore a CGM sensor (Abbott) for 2 weeks.

Machine-learned potentials (MLPs) have exhibited remarkable accuracy, yet the lack of general-purpose MLPs for a broad spectrum of elements and their alloys limits their applicability. Here, we present a promising approach for constructing a unified general-purpose MLP for numerous elements, demonstrated through a model (UNEP-v1) for 16 elemental metals and their alloys. To achieve a complete representation of the chemical space, we show, via principal component analysis and diverse test datasets, that employing one-component and two-component systems suffices.

Objective: Interpersonal violence (IV) in sport is challenging to define, prevent and remedy due to its subjectivity and complexity. The 2024 International Olympic Committee Consensus on Interpersonal Violence and Safeguarding aimed to synthesise evidence on IV and safeguarding in sport, introduce a new conceptual model of IV in sport and offer more accessible safeguarding guidance to all within the sports ecosystem by merging evidence with insights from Olympic athletes.
Methods: A 15-member expert panel performed a scoping review following Joanna Briggs Institute methodologies.

Many active systems are capable of forming intriguing patterns at scales significantly larger than the size of their individual constituents. Cyanobacteria are one of the most ancient and important phyla of organisms that has allowed the evolution of more complex life forms. Despite its importance, the role of motility on the pattern formation of their colonies is not understood.

Sleepiness is a significant workplace safety hazard and prevalent in shift workers including bus drivers. Several aspects of professional driving can result in shortened sleep and increased sleepiness, which has the potential to result in workplace injuries, incidents and crashes. Caffeine is an effective sleepiness countermeasure; however, private and professional drivers also report using potentially ineffective countermeasures such as sugar.

Background: We investigated associations of childhood socioeconomic position and health with trajectories of grip strength from middle to older ages in two distinct populations.
Methods: We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, n = 16,701) and English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA, n = 12,695). Hand grip strength was measured at three timepoints in CHARLS (2011-2015) and four in ELSA (2001-2020).

Conventional wisdom suggests that social media, especially when used by authoritarian powers with nefarious aims, leaves citizens of democratic countries vulnerable to psychological influence campaigns. But such concerns overlook predispositions among recipients of false claims to reject (or to endorse) conspiratorial narratives. Analyzing responses from a survey fielded in 19 countries, we find that it is a preexisting conspiracy outlook at the individual level, more so than media diets, which consistently predicts rating Russia's pretenses for the invasion as more accurate.

Developmental exposure to environmental chemicals (ECs) perturbs establishment and maintenance of the ovarian reserve across the reproductive lifetime, leading to premature follicle depletion and ovarian aging. Considering humans are exposed to a complex mixture of ECs, real-life models assessing their cumulative impact on the ovarian reserve are needed. Biosolids is a source of real-life mixture of ECs.

Unlabelled: Biodiversity loss is increasing worldwide, necessitating effective approaches to counteract negative trends. Here, we assessed aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity in two river catchments in Switzerland; one significantly degraded and associated with urbanisation and instream barriers, and one in a near-natural condition. Contrary to our expectations, environmental heterogeneity was lower in the near-natural stream, with enhanced productivity in the degraded system resulting in a greater range of environmental conditions.

Collaborative robots (cobots) are increasingly integrated into Industry 4.0 dynamic manufacturing environments that require frequent system reconfiguration due to changes in cobot paths and payloads. This necessitates fast methods for identifying payload inertial parameters to compensate the cobot controller and ensure precise and safe operation.

Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) solution polymerisation of the bio-based lactone monomer γ-methyl-α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone (γMeMBL) has been demonstrated in DMSO and Cyrene. RAFT control was evidenced by control over molecular weights, low disperisites, and kinetic evaluation. Purified P(γMeMBL) homopolymers exhibited high glass transition temperatures (206-221 °C) and excellent thermal stabilities.

Background: Many adults do not meet physical activity recommendations for optimal health, and this is often because people find it difficult to maintain physical activity in the long term. This study focuses on identifying and synthesising factors that may influence the maintenance of physical activity in adults with and without known health conditions.
Method: A systematic review and qualitative synthesis using thematic analysis was conducted.

Two-dimensional (2D) superconductors that reside on substrates must be influenced by Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The intriguing effect of Rashba-type SOCs on iron-based superconductors (IBSs) has remained largely a mystery. In this work, we unveil modified Landau-level spectroscopy and the intricate band splitting of FeSe monolayers through the precision of scanning tunneling spectroscopy, which unequivocally demonstrates the presence of Rashba SOC.
