Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the foremost cause of mortality globally. Taurine, an amino acid, holds promise for cardiovascular health through mechanisms such as calcium regulation, blood pressure reduction, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Despite these potential benefits, previous studies have yielded inconsistent results.

Introduction: This study compared the efficacy of hydroxypropyl guar (HPG)/hyaluronic acid (HA) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)/HA lubricant eye drops for post-cataract surgery dry eye disease (DED).
Methods: This was a prospective, open-label, assessor-masked, parallel, randomized controlled study. Seventy patients with DED who underwent cataract surgery were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive 1-2 drops of HPG/HA or CMC/HA lubricant four times daily for 3 weeks.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different pre-transplant local treatments on the survival of liver transplantation (LTx) recipients with BCLC Stage A Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). We analyzed data from the Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Health Insurance Research Databases spanning 2012 to 2018. Employing propensity score matching, patients were categorized into three groups: those receiving local treatments (180 patients), hepatectomy (179 patients), and combined treatments (180 patients).

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a leading risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), contributing to cancer development through direct genomic integration and chronic inflammation. N-acetylcysteine (NAC), known for its antioxidant properties, is widely utilized in cancer prevention. However, clinical evidence regarding its protective effect against HCC in HBV carriers remains sparse.

The purpose of this study was to explore the initial benefits of introducing the ICOPE (Integrated care for older people) information assessment system for the management of hospitalized elderly patients in a teaching hospital in Eastern Taiwan. The ICOPE information assessment system was set up for case screening and abnormal referral through clinical ICOPE, followed by follow-up and case management. The results showed a total of 3424 screened cases, an average of 311 ICOPE screenings per month, an average of 48 abnormal screenings per month (15%), a referral rate of 79%, a rescreening rate of 91%, and a case management completion rate of 71%.

Background/purpose: Accumulating evidence has suggested that treatment failure of cancer therapy can be attributed to cancer stem cells (CSCs). Among numerous regulators of cancer stemness, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have gained significant attention recently. In this study, we examined the role of gastric adenocarcinoma predictive long intergenic noncoding RNA (GAPLINC) in oral CSCs (OCSCs).

To evaluate the impact of statin use on overall survival and lung cancer-specific survival in patients with unresectable stage III lung squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) undergoing standard concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Using data from the Taiwan Cancer Registry Database and National Health Insurance Research Database, this propensity score matching cohort study analyzed the influence of statin use during CCRT on overall survival and lung cancer-specific survival. Statin use during CCRT was independently associated with significant improvements in overall survival and lung cancer-specific survival.

Aim: Choosing the initial treatment for type 2 diabetes (T2D) is pivotal, requiring consideration of solid clinical evidence and patient characteristics. Despite metformin's historical preference, its efficacy in preventing cerebrovascular events lacked empirical validation. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between first-line monotherapy (metformin or non-metformin antidiabetic medications) and cerebrovascular complications in patients with T2D without diabetic complications.

Purpose: No study has compared 30-day and 90-day adverse postoperative outcomes between old-age patients with and those without sarcopenia.
Patients And Methods: We categorize elderly patients receiving major surgery into two groups according to the presence or absence of preoperative sarcopenia that were matched at a 1:4 ratio through propensity score matching (PSM). We analyzed 30-day or 90-day adverse postoperative outcomes and mortality in patients with and without sarcopenia receiving major surgery.

Biotin receptors are overexpressed in various cancer cell types, essential in tumor development, metabolism, and metastasis. Chemotherapeutic agents may be more effective and have fewer adverse effects if they specifically target the biotin receptors on cancer cells. Polymeric micelles (PMs) with nanoscale size via the EPR effect to accumulate near tumor tissue.

To assess the efficacy of maintenance chemotherapy in the management of unresectable locally advanced pancreatic head adenocarcinoma (PHA) cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT). This study, a large-scale head-to-head propensity score matching (PSM) cohort study, employed real-world data. PSM was used to evaluate the impact of maintenance chemotherapy on overall survival and cancer-specific survival in patients with unresectable locally advanced PHA who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy and CCRT.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common and aggressive cancer, and its standard treatment is concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). Maintenance chemotherapy is often used to help prevent cancer recurrence, but its efficacy for patients with ESCC receiving CCRT remains unclear. We conducted a large head-to-head propensity score matching cohort study to estimate the effects of maintenance chemotherapy on overall survival and cancer-specific survival in patients with ESCC receiving standard CCRT.
