We determined whether estimation of intake of specific carotenoids with a standard food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) could be improved by collection of additional data on the intake of carotenoid-rich food items. The foods included on an addendum to the standard FFQ were potentially important dietary contributors of alpha- and beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, or lycopene. Participants (n = 215), ages 50-74 years, provided fasting blood samples and completed the FFQ and the addendum.

African American women ages 50 and older have been a difficult group to reach through conventional breast cancer intervention programs. Cultural and health beliefs that differ from mainstream society are reported to be factors contributing to the low rates of breast screening among this group.

The Microtox EC50 values for the following ketones are reported in the following homologous series: straight chain methyl ketones (acetone, 2-butanone, 2-pentanone, 2-hepatonone, 2-octanone, 2-decanone, and 2-tridecanone); methyl ketones substituted at one alpha carbon (3-methyl-2-butanone; 3,3-dimethyl-2-butanone); methyl substituted at two alpha carbons (2,4-dimethyl-3-pentanone; 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-3-pentanone); phenyl groups replacing methyl in acetone (acetophenone; benzophenone); methyl groups substituted at the alpha carbons of cyclohexanone; and 2,3- 2,4-, and 2,5-hexanediones, most for the first time. While there were linear relationships between log EC50 and MW for the straight chain methyl ketones, and for methyl substitution at the alpha carbon for methyl ketones, there were no other linear relationships. As molecular weight increased, the EC50 values of soluble ketones decreased; as distance between two carbonyl groups decreased so too did EC50 values.

Meta-analysis is essential for obtaining reproducible summaries of study results and valuable for discovering patterns among study results. A good meta-analysis will highlight and delineate the subjective components of these processes and vigorously search for sources of heterogeneity. Unfortunately, these objective are not always met by common techniques.

The concentration of selenium in toenail clippings and blood reflects dietary intake better than does intake calculated from dietary data because of the highly variable selenium concentration in different samples of the same food. However, the time course of selenium intake in relation to subsequent concentrations in toenail clippings is unclear. Therefore, 12 males were fed high-dose (4.

Three groups of rats were reared: mother-reared controls; artificially reared controls (AR-c), which were fed a milk substitute with the same composition of macro-nutrients as natural rat's milk; and an artificially reared test group (AR-h), which was fed a milk substitute identical to that fed AR-c pups except that the component of fat containing medium chain length fatty acids was omitted (medium chain triglyceride deficient) and replaced on an isocaloric basis with carbohydrate. The AR rats were fed the milk substitute from postnatal Day 5 until Day 17 by fitting them with gastric cannulas through which the milk could be infused automatically. The nutritional impact of the milk substitutes on growth and the integrity of the brain was assessed by a comparison of morphologic and biochemical markers.

From 1981-1988, 3433 women were fitted with a cavity-rim cervical cap in a Food and Drug Administration-approved study. The estimated first-year pregnancy risk was 11.3% (95% confidence limits 10.

Monthly breast self-examination (BSE) to aid in the early diagnosis of breast cancer is advocated for all adult women, but regular and competent practice is unusual. Our purpose was to explore the associations between young women's reported cancer history, BSE training, demographic variables (predictors), self-reported frequency of BSE, BSE skill level, breast lump detection ability, confidence, and anxiety (outcome variables). A general health history questionnaire was administered to 73 female university students, faculty, and staff.

There have been a number of studies linking psychological distress with the demand for medical care. The importance of these studies lies in the finding that the distressed use of services more frequently than the non-distressed. To the extent that many of the visits of the distressed are for medically trivial reasons, which is the most frequent interpretation of this finding, there may be an argument in favor of cost containment strategies aimed at diverting the distressed away from seeking 'unneeded' medical attention.
