Background: The performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the effect of patient factors, and resulting surgical management in underserved and ethnically diverse breast cancer (BC) patient populations have been understudied.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 1116 consecutive patients who were newly diagnosed with in situ or invasive BC with preoperative staging MRI. Non-index lesions (NILs) were defined as abnormal MRI findings with BI-RADS score of 4 or 5 in breast or axillary nodes not previously detected by conventional imaging.

Escalation of oncologic services at the end of life among patients with gynecologic cancer at an urban, public hospital.

Purpose: Use of oncology-related services is increasingly scrutinized, yet precisely which services are actually rendered to patients, particularly at the end of life, is unknown. This study characterizes the end-of-life use of medical services by patients with gynecologic cancer at a safety-net hospital.

Methods: Oncologic history and metrics of medical use (eg, hospitalizations, chemotherapy infusions, procedures) for patients with gynecologic oncology who died between December 2006 and February 2012 were evaluated.

Background: The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations requires that hospitals have a planned approach to systematically collect data on processes related to the use, ordering, and administering of blood components. This study describes how a comprehensive blood-administering assessment program and the FOCUS-PDCA approach improved overall blood-administering practices.

Study Design And Methods: Nurses were trained to observe blood issuance, blood administering, and patient monitoring steps, and to audit patient's charts to measure compliance with blood-ordering procedures.

The role of cell cycle protein expression in gestational trophoblastic disease is poorly understood. In this study we investigated the immunostaining patterns of G(1) restriction point and G(1)-S regulatory proteins E2F-1, Cdk2, cyclin E, p27(kip1), and the proliferation marker Ki-67 on routinely processed sections of 29 hydatidiform moles (10 partial moles and 19 complete moles, including 9 persistent moles), 7 choriocarcinomas, and 7 normal placentas. Ki-67 trophoblast staining decreased with increasing gestational age of the placenta, and showed maximal expression in gestational trophoblastic disease.

Background: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid is of limited value in discriminating between nonneoplastic and neoplastic lesions in approximately 5-29% of patients. Indeterminate lesions are due primarily to the overlapping cytologic features found in follicular lesions. In this report, the authors describe their experience with FNA biopsy of the thyroid, concentrating on the analysis of those aspirates placed in the follicular lesion category.

Problem: Elevated serum inhibin levels have been found in ovarian cancer patients; however, the source of the elevated inhibin is uncertain. Previous studies of activin in human ovarian cancer suggest that activin may promote the growth of the tumor. The aims of this study were to examine the source of elevated inhibin from ovarian epithelial tumors (OETs) and to preliminarily investigate the role of the gonadotropin-inhibin/activin relationship in the development of OET.

Fine-needle aspiration of a metaplastic breast carcinoma with extensive melanocytic differentiation: a case report.

Metaplastic carcinomas of the breast are uncommon breast tumors with aberrant cellular differentiation, most commonly showing ductal, squamous, and mesenchymal components. A breast carcinoma composed of both epithelial and melanocytic differentiation is rare, with only four previously reported cases in the literature. We present the fifth reported case, where the diagnosis was suggested by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and later confirmed after the surgical specimen was excised.
