Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) have revolutionized cancer therapy, but their use is limited by the development of autoimmunity in healthy tissues as a side effect of treatment. Such immune-related adverse events (IrAE) contribute to hospitalizations, cancer treatment interruption and even premature death. ICI-induced autoimmune diabetes mellitus (ICI-T1DM) is a life-threatening IrAE that presents with rapid pancreatic beta-islet cell destruction leading to hyperglycemia and life-long insulin dependence.

Demand for scaling and sustaining clinical services to improve health outcomes while minimizing costs is rising, particularly for patients dealing with major cardiovascular disease and stroke risk factors such as hypertension. Consequently, there is growing national and local interest in engaging pharmacists as part of the solution through the implementation of comprehensive medication management. To capitalize on this momentum, a team from the University of Southern California led the establishment of the California Right Meds Collaborative (CRMC) in 2019.

The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is defined by impaired lipid handling by macrophages which increases intracellular lipid accumulation. This dysregulation of macrophages triggers the accumulation of apoptotic cells and chronic inflammation which contributes to disease progression. We previously reported that mice with increased macrophage-specific angiotensin-converting enzyme, termed ACE10/10 mice, resist atherosclerosis in an adeno-associated virus-proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (AAV-PCSK9)-induced model.

Management of immunosuppression in patients with a failing or failed kidney transplant requires a complete assessment of their clinical condition. One of the major considerations in determining immunosuppression is whether or not such an individual is considered a candidate for re-transplantation. Withdrawal of immunosuppression in a re-transplant candidate can result in allosensitization and markedly reduce the chances of a repeat transplant.

Objective: We aimed to assess SSc mortality by age in the general population over the past five decades.
Methods: This is a population-based study using a national mortality database and the census data for all US residents. We calculated the proportions of deaths for SSc and for all other causes (non-SSc) by age, and calculated age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) for SSc and non-SSc, and the ratio of SSc-ASMR to non-SSc-ASMR by age groups for each year from 1968 through 2015.

Background: Many adrenal incidentalomas do not undergo appropriate biochemical testing and complete imaging characterization to assess for hormone hypersecretion and malignancy. With the growing availability of clinical narratives in the electronic medical record, automated surveillance using advanced data analytic techniques may represent a promising method to improve management.
Methods: A data provisioning process using a series of structured query language scripts was used to abstract all chest and abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging reports from an academic health care system in 2018.

According to data from the American Cancer Society, cancer is one of the deadliest health problems globally. Annually, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) causes more than 100,000 deaths worldwide [1-4], posing an urgent need to develop effective treatments to increase patient survival outcomes. New therapies are expected to address a major factor contributing to cancer's resistance to standard therapies: oncogenic heterogeneity.

Background: With health care practice consolidation, the increasing geographic scope of health care systems, and the advancement of mobile telecommunications, there is increasing interest in telemedicine-based health care consultations. Anesthesiology has had experience with telemedicine consultation for preoperative evaluation since 2004, but the majority of studies have been conducted in rural settings. There is a paucity of literature of use in metropolitan areas.

Artificial intelligence-driven anesthesiology and perioperative care may just be around the corner. However, its promises of improved safety and patient outcomes can only become a reality if we take the time to examine its technical, ethical, and moral implications. The aim of perioperative medicine is to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease.

Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been increasing over the past 2 decades in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. With the widespread use of early human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment, which virtually eliminates transmission risk, and the availability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, there have been attitudinal changes regarding HIV infection with resultant increases in sexual contact and declines in condom use. Doxycycline is used for primary prophylaxis in a number of infectious diseases.

Aiming to increase care access, the national Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) initiative of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) embedded specialists, care managers, or both in primary care clinics to collaboratively care for veterans with psychiatric illness. The initiative's effects on health care use and cost patterns were examined among 5.4 million primary care patients in 396 VHA clinics in 2013-16.

The historical narrative on diversity, race, and health would predict that California's population change from 22 percent racial/ethnic minority in 1970 to 62 percent in 2016 would lead to a massive health crisis with high mortality rates, low life expectancy, and high infant mortality rates-particularly given the state's high rates of negative social determinants of health: poverty, high school incompletion, and uninsurance. We present data that suggest an alternative narrative: In spite of these negative factors, California has very low rates of mortality and infant mortality and long life expectancy. This alternative implies that racial diversity may offer opportunities for good health outcomes and that community agency may be a positive determinant.

Objective: Aiming to foster timely, high-quality mental health care for Veterans, VA's Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) embeds mental health specialists in primary care and promotes care management for depression. PC-MHI and patient-centered medical home providers work together to provide the bulk of mental health care for primary care patients with low-to-moderate-complexity mental health conditions. This study examines whether increasing primary care clinic engagement in PC-MHI services is associated with changes in patient health care utilization and costs.
