Summary: Elemental imaging provides detailed profiling of metal bioaccumulation, offering more precision than bulk analysis by targeting specific tissue areas. However, accurately identifying comparable tissue regions from elemental maps is challenging, requiring the integration of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides for effective comparison. Facilitating the streamlined co-registration of whole slide images (WSI) and elemental maps, TRACE enhances the analysis of tissue regions and elemental abundance in various pathological conditions.

Scalable Spray-On Fabrication Approach for Voltage-Tunable Thermal Emissivity Surfaces.

We report a new approach for fabricating gate-tunable thermal emissivity surfaces by spraying them on graphene ink. The devices consist of a multilayer graphene (MLG)/porous alumina membrane/gold stack, in which the MLG is deposited by spraying the graphene ink onto the porous membrane using an airbrush. The graphene ink consists of μm-sized flakes of MLG suspended in a solution of polyvinylpyrrolidone and ethylene glycol.

This article describes how Caenorhabditis elegans can fill this gap, serving as a useful model for the discovery of molecular epigenetic mechanisms that are conserved in humans.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients are 90% women and over three times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than women in the general population. Chest pain with no obstructive cardiac disease is associated with coronary microvascular disease (CMD), where narrowing of the small blood vessels can lead to ischemia, and frequently reported by SLE patients. Using whole blood RNA samples, we asked whether gene signatures discriminate SLE patients with coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) on cardiac MRI (n = 4) from those without (n = 7) and whether any signaling pathway is linked to the underlying pathobiology of SLE CMD.

Objective: Postpartum hypertension accounts for 15 to 20% of postpartum Emergency Department (ED) visits and readmissions in the United States. Postpartum readmission is a quality metric and target of quality improvement as it indicates poor control of hypertension and can portend increased morbidity. We aim to evaluate risk factors for postpartum ED visits and readmissions for hypertension.

The ACTION VAD Registry: A Collective Five-Year Experience.

Background: The Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION) began in 2018 as a collaborative learning health system committed to improving outcomes in pediatric heart failure, including children and adults with congenital heart disease, supported with ventricular assist devices (VADs). Methods: The ACTION VAD registry report was created from data submitted to the ACTION learning network from April 2018-June 2023.

Background: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have found antibiotics to be a feasible and safe alternative to appendicectomy in adults with imaging-confirmed acute appendicitis. However, patient inclusion criteria and outcome definitions vary greatly between RCTs. We aimed to compare antibiotics with appendicectomy for the treatment of acute appendicitis using individual patient data and uniform outcome definitions.

Introduction: There are consistent data demonstrating socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with cancer survivorship among older adults, but research on the relationship between area-level SES and risk of premature mortality from cancer remains not well understood. This study investigated the association between county-level SES and premature mortality from cancer.

Methods: Demographic characteristics and causes of death were ascertained from the national death certificate data for years 2016-2020.

Comparison of Postoperative Antibiotic Protocols for Pediatric Complicated Appendicitis: A Western Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium Study.

Background: There is no consensus on the appropriate duration of postoperative antibiotics for complicated appendicitis in children. Commonly used antibiotic endpoints include normalization of white blood cell count (WBC) or completion of a minimum number of prespecified treatment days. We compared clinical outcomes resulting from varying postoperative antibiotic protocols for complicated appendicitis in children.

Sometimes Small Is Beautiful: Discovery of the Janus Kinases (JAK) and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (STAT) Pathways and the Initial Development of JAK Inhibitors for IBD Treatment.

The Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transfection (JAK/STAT) system is comprised of multiple cell surface receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, and signal transducers that are key components of numerous systems involved in malignancy, inflammation, immune surveillance and development, cellular proliferation, metabolism, differentiation, apoptosis, and hematologic disorders, all of which when disrupted can produce severe disease. Nevertheless, small molecule inhibitors of the four known JAKs, termed JAKinibs, have found therapeutic indications for a broad category of diseases. In this perspective, I will summarize the development of JAK inhibitors, whose origins were in antiquity, with particular attention to their use in treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

A data-driven latent variable approach to validating the research domain criteria framework.

Despite the widespread use of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework in psychiatry and neuroscience, recent studies suggest that the RDoC is insufficiently specific or excessively broad relative to the underlying brain circuitry it seeks to elucidate. To address these concerns, we employ a latent variable approach using bifactor analysis. We examine 84 whole-brain task-based fMRI (tfMRI) activation maps from 19 studies with 6192 participants.
