Skin has heterogenous identities on different body sites despite similar cellular compositions. There are two types of skin, volar (palmoplantar) and non-volar (dorsal), which are characterized by epidermal thickness, pigmentation, and presence of hair follicles. However, the mechanisms underlying the development of these different skin types remain unclear.

Plants often face incompatible growing environments like drought, salinity, cold, frost, and elevated temperatures that affect plant growth and development leading to low yield and, in worse circumstances, plant death. The arsenal of versatile compounds for plant consumption and structure is called metabolites, which allows them to develop strategies to stop enemies, fight pathogens, replace their competitors and go beyond environmental restraints. These elements are formed under particular abiotic stresses like flooding, heat, drought, cold, etc.

Development of high-performance ionic organic network (ION) adsorbents is of great importance for water remediation. However, the research on IONs is still nascent, especially, the design philosophy regarding contaminant adsorption has rarely been explored. In this contribution, we optimized the adsorption efficiency of IONs by increasing the density of charged sites and improving their accessibility.

Winter () is an important oilseed crop in northern China, but the mechanism of its cold resistance remains unclear. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) plays important roles in the response of this plant to abiotic stress and in scavenging free radicals. In this study, the roles of APX proteins in the cold response and superoxide metabolism pathways in rapeseed species were investigated, and a comprehensive analysis of phylogeny, chromosome distribution, motif identification, sequence structure, gene duplication, and RNA-seq expression profiles in the gene family was conducted.

Planarians are widely used as water quality indicator species to provide early warning of harmful pollution in aquatic ecosystems. However, the impact of microplastics on freshwater planarians remains poorly investigated. Here we simulated waterborne microplastic exposure in the natural environments to examine the effect on the antioxidant defense system and microbiota in Dugesia japonica.

A unique near-spherical ZnO nanostructure was synthesized by using mixed solvents composed of polyethylene glycol-400 (PEG-400) and water at the volume ratio of 12:1 via the solvo-thermal method, and it possessed an ideal morphology with higher uniformity, better dispersion and small particle size. Such ZnO was employed to modify glass carbon electrode (GCE) for the construction of electrochemical sensor, i.e.

Saline-alkali stress is one of the common abiotic stresses for plants. Hydrogen sulfide (HS), as a gas signal, plays an important role in driving the responses of plants to saline-alkali stress. To explore the regulating effects of HS on the ascorbate (AsA)-glutathione (GSH) cycle in naked oat (Avena nude) under saline-alkali stress, we used sodium hydrogen sulfide (NaHS) as donor of exogenous HS and hydroxylamine (HA) as HS synthesis inhibitor to examine the effects of HS on plant growth, leaf reactive oxygen species, membrane lipid peroxidation, and antioxidants and key enzymes in the AsA-GSH cycle in "Dingyou 9" variety of naked oat under saline-alkali mixed stress.

Stomatal immunity is mediated by ABA, an osmotic stress-responsive phytohormone that closes stomata via calcium-dependent and -independent signaling pathways. However, the functional involvement of ABA signal transducers in stomatal immunity remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that stomatal immunity was compromised in mutants of the ABA signaling core.

Efficient electrocatalytic reduction of CO to value-added chemicals and fuels is a promising technology for mitigating energy shortage and pollution issues yet highly relay on the development of high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, we develop an effective strategy to fabricate carbonized wood membrane (CW) decorated with AuPd alloy nanoparticles with tunable composition (termed as AuPd@CW) as self-supported electrodes for efficient electrocatalytic CO reduction. The uniformly distributed AuPd nanoparticles on wood matrix are first achieved through the in-situ reduction of metal cations by the lignin content in wood.

An efficient method for simultaneous extraction, purification and determination of six lignans in Schisandra chinensis Baill was developed by employing matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction followed by HPLC-UV determination analysis. Several sorbent and desorption solvent that affected the extraction yield of lignans were investigated; neutral alumina and absolute ethanol were selected as the best dispersing material and desorption agent, respectively. Other extraction conditions for MSPD were optimized as follows: 1:2 of S.

Developing and designing bifunctional electrocatalysts are very important for the production of hydrogen from water electrolysis. The reasonable interface modulation can effectively lead to the optimization of electronic configuration through the interface electron transfer in the heterostructures and thus resulting in the enhanced efficiency. In this work, self-supported and heterogeneous interface-rich NiS@FeNiS@NF electrocatalyst for overall water splitting was designed and prepared through a controllable step-wise hydrothermal process.

Different cathode materials have different surface chemical components and machining capacities, which may finally result in different machining quality and machining efficiency of workpieces. In this paper, in order to investigate the influence of cathode materials on the electrochemical machining of thin-walled workpiece made of 304 stainless steel, five cylindrical electrodes are used as the target working cathodes of electrochemical machining to conduct experiments and research, including 45# steel, 304 stainless steel, aluminum alloy 6061, brass H62, and tungsten steel YK15. The stray current corrosion, taper, and material removal rate were used as the criteria to evaluate the drilling quality of efficiency of a thin-walled workpiece made of 304 stainless steel.

The ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters of total water-soluble polysaccharides (TABPs) from Acanthopanaxbrachypus fruit were optimized by Box-Behnken design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM). Physicochemical, structural, and functional properties of TABPs were investigated by chemical analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), water-holding capacity (WHC), oil-holding capacity (OHC), emulsion capacity (EC), emulsion stability (ES), as well as DPPH and ABTS scavenging assays. The results showed that the maximal UAE-yield of TABPs was 3.

High-intensity land use has led to water resource imbalance and land degradation in oasis regions, which pose a great threat to ecological security. Optimization of land use patterns is crucial to ensuring the rational distribution of water and land resources and improving the stability of oasis ecosystems. The purpose of this study is to spatially allocate land use activities to more suitable regions.

First-principles calculations have been performed to investigate the interaction between solute impurity O and H/He/vacancy irradiation defects in Ti3AlC2. The formation energy and occupation of O atoms within different defects as well as the trapping progress of O/H clusters are discussed. It is found that the O atom preferentially occupies the hexahedral interstitial site (Ihex-1) in bulk Ti3AlC2, whereas it prefers to occupy the neighbouring tetrahedral interstitial site (Itetr-2) within pre-exisiting Al monovacancy (VAl), Al divacancy (2VAl-Al) and the 2VAl-C divacancy composed of Al and C vacancies.
