Background: Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of mortality in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment. The oxidative modification of low-density lipoprotein is a crucial step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is the protein responsible for most of the antioxidant activity of high-density lipoprotein, and its reduced levels are associated with more cardiovascular events in several populations.

Asthma is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence and incidence, manifested by allergic inflammatory reactions, and is life-threatening for patients with severe disease. Repetitive challenges with the allergens and limitation of treatment efficacy greatly dampens successful management of asthma. The adverse events related to several drugs currently used, such as corticosteroids and β-agonists, and the low rigorous adherence to preconized protocols likely compromises a more assertive therapy.

Arthroplasty is an orthopedic surgical procedure that replaces a dysfunctional joint by an orthopedic prosthesis, thereby restoring joint function. Upon the use of the joint prosthesis, a wearing process begins, which releases components such as titanium dioxide (TiO) that trigger an immune response in the periprosthetic tissue, leading to arthritis, arthroplasty failure, and the need for revision. Flavonoids belong to a class of natural polyphenolic compounds that possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

The food industry has been exploring the association of polymers with nanoparticles in packaging production, and active products are essential to increase the shelf life of food and avoid contamination. Our study developed starch-poly (adipate co-terephthalate butyl) films with silver nanoparticles produced with components (bio-AgNPs), intending to control foodborne pathogens. The bio-AgNPs showed activity against different serotypes, including multidrug-resistant Saint Paul and Enteritidis, with minimum bactericidal concentrations ranging from 4.

Background: Despite the high prevalence of sleep disturbances in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), the relationship between physical activity in daily life (PADL) and sleep in this population remains unclear.
Objectives: Investigate the impact of sleep on different domains of PADL in IPF and characterize their PADL profile.
Methods: Sixty-seven participants (thirty-three with IPF and thirty-four healthy subjects [control group]) were included.

In self-revolving gram-negative infection, Resolvin D5 (RvD5) was found to enhance bacteria phagocytosis and reduce the production of inflammatory mediators, contributing to the resolution of infection. LPS (lipopolysaccharide) is a gram-negative bacterial structure product which activates the immune system and, at high doses, leads to endotoxemia. To our knowledge, the effect of RvD5 against LPS endotoxemia has not been investigated to date.

In order to achieve aesthetic and harmonious smile results, the use of anterior upper teeth golden proportion concepts represents reliable and scientific based guidelines. However, measuring, recording and analysing teeth and smiles biometric values proves to be a clinical and laboratory routine chalenge, once it is time consuming and demands additional especific math calculus or formulas. The aim of this paper is present an invention, "anterior upper teeth golden proportion millimetric templates," a set of instruments fabricated in order to achieve precise and fast millimetric measures, once they present predefined geometrical drawings and diagrams.

The zebrafish is an animal model of increasing use in many biomedical fields of study, including toxicology, inflammation, and tissue regeneration. In this paper, we have investigated the inflammatory effects of s venom (LIV) on zebrafish, as well as the effects of Maresin 2 (Mar2) and Resolvin D5 (RvD5), two specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), in the context of tissue regeneration after fin fold amputation. Furthermore, increasing concentrations of LIV (250-2000 ng) were assayed for their haemolytic effects and, afterwards, the same concentrations were evaluated when injected intraperitoneally.

This research investigated the developmental process of five lateral preference dimensions (hand, foot, trunk, hearing, and visual preference). A total of 1236 volunteers participated in this study, divided into five age groups: 07-12 (n = 247); 13-17 (n = 234); 18-30 (n = 227); 31-60 (n = 225); and 61-90 years old (n = 303). Lateral preference was assessed via questionnaire with the Global Lateral Preference Inventory.

Background: Recently some articles presented information related to the possible effect of maturity over the cognitive control and cardiorespiratory fitness, however little is known about the real effects of maturity in the relation of these variables. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to examine the potential mediating role of somatic maturity on the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and cognitive control.
Methods: This three-year longitudinal research comprises two data collection groups: a baseline conducted in 2016 with 394 adolescents (aged 11.

This study examined the factors associated with low muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance in 331 people living with HIV. Participants completed handgrip as a strength measure, appendicular skeletal muscle mass using bioimpedance analysis, and chair rise was a physical performance measure. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between low values on these measures with sociodemographic, HIV-related factors, and comorbidities.

Background: The presence of multimorbidity increases the risk of mortality, and identifying correlates of multimorbidity can direct interventions by targeting specific modifiable correlates. Here we aimed to investigate the association between two types of screen-based behaviors and multimorbidity.
Methods: We used data from 87,678 Brazilian adults from the National Health Survey (2019).

The genus comprises an important group of ubiquitous bacteria of marine systems with a high infectious capacity for humans and fish, which can lead to death or cause economic losses in aquaculture. However, little is known about the evolutionary process that led to the adaptation and colonization of humans and also about the consequences of the uncontrollable use of antibiotics in aquaculture. Here, comparative genomics analysis and functional gene annotation showed that the species more related to humans presented a significantly higher amount of proteins associated with colonization processes, such as transcriptional factors, signal transduction mechanisms, and iron uptake.

We standardized a model by injecting Ehrlich tumor cells into the paw to evaluate cancer pain mechanisms and pharmacological treatments. Opioid treatment, but not cyclooxygenase inhibitor or tricyclic antidepressant treatments reduces Ehrlich tumor pain. To best use this model for drug screening it is essential to understand its pathophysiological mechanisms.

Purpose: This study compared concentric-eccentric coupled (CON-ECC), concentric-only (CON), and eccentric-only (ECC) resistance training of the elbow flexors for their effects on muscle strength and hypertrophy.
Methods: Non-resistance-trained young adults were assigned to one of the four groups: CON-ECC (n = 14), CON (n = 14) and ECC (n = 14) training groups, and a control group (n = 11) that had measurements only. The training group participants performed dominant arm elbow flexor resistance training in extended elbow joint angles (0°-50°) twice a week for 5 weeks.
