Purpose: Although diabetes is highly prevalent in patients with MacTel, progression to severe non-proliferative (NPDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is rarely reported. We report multimodal imaging features of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) in eyes with macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel).

Methods: Retrospective case series of seven participants of the MacTel Study at the Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust study site and one patient from the Institute of Retina and Vitreous of Londrina, Brazil.

Aim: The present study evaluated whether topiramate (TPM) treatment during the peripubertal period affects vascular parameters of male rats and whether oxidative stress plays a role in these changes.

Main Methods: Rats were treated with TPM (41 mg/kg/day, gavage) or vehicle (CTR group) from the postnatal day (PND) 28 to 50. At PND 51 and 120 the rats were evaluated for: thoracic aorta reactivity to phenylephrine, in the presence (Endo+) or absence of endothelium (Endo-), to acetylcholine and to sodium nitroprusside (SNP), aortic thickness and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression.

Ventral incisional hernias are common indications for elective repair and frequently complicated by recurrence. Surgical meshes, which may be synthetic, bio-synthetic, or biological, decrease recurrence and, resultingly, their use has become standard. While most patients are greatly benefited, mesh represents a permanently implanted foreign body.

Holocentric karyotypes are assumed to rapidly evolve through chromosome fusions and fissions due to the diffuse nature of their centromeres. Here, we took advantage of the recent availability of a chromosome-scale reference genome for , a model species of this holocentric genus, and developed the first set of oligo-based barcode probes for a holocentric plant. These probes were applied to 13 additional species of the genus, aiming to investigate the evolutionary dynamics driving the karyotype evolution in .

Auditory evoked potentials are widely used in clinical practice to complement the assessment of central auditory processing. However, it is necessary to understand whether these potentials are highly accurate, to assist in the diagnosis of auditory processing disorder.  To measure the accuracy of middle and long latency auditory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of auditory processing disorder in adults.

Laboratory of Research in Applied Immunology, University of Londrina, Londrina, PR, Brazil; Department of Pathology, Clinical Analysis and Toxicology, Laboratory of Research in Applied Immunology, University of Londrina, Londrina, PR, Brazil.

Objective And Design: A cross-sectional study evaluated the IL18-105G > A (rs360717) and IL18-137C > G (rs187238) variants on Coronavírus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity.

Subjects And Methods: 528 patients with COVID-19 classifed with mild (n = 157), moderate (n = 63) and critical (n = 308) disease were genotpyed for the IL18-105G > A and IL18-137C > G variants.

Results: We observed associations between severe + critical COVID-19 groups (reference group was mild COVID-19) and the IL18-105G > A (p = 0.

Metastasis is the main problem in the treatment of prostate cancer (PCa), and for it to occur, proteolytic enzymes must remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM) surrounding the tumor. The most important group of enzymes with this action include the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which act on various substrates cleaving ECM components. The present study aimed to evaluate the protein immunostaining profiles of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and 9 (MMP-9) in PCa Brazilian patients using the indirect immunohistochemical methodology.

Background: During the breastfeeding period, important transient changes in calcium homeostasis are verified in the maternal skeleton, to meet the demand for calcium for breastmilk production. The literature is inconclusive regarding the causes and percentages of involvement of bone densitometry resulting from exclusive breastfeeding (4 to 6 months).

Methods: This article aims to systematically review the literature, to determine the occurrence, intensity, and factors involved in alterations in maternal bone mineral density (BMD), during a period of 4 to 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding.

Toxicity of the emerging mycotoxins beauvericin and enniatins: A mini-review.

Toxicon

February 2024

Laboratory of Animal Pathology, Londrina State University, P.O. Box 10.011, Londrina, PR, 86057-970, Brazil. Electronic address:

Beauvericin and enniatins, emerging mycotoxins produced mainly by Fusarium species, are natural contaminants of cereals and cereal products. These mycotoxins are cyclic hexadepsipeptides with ionophore properties and their toxicity mechanism is related to their ability to transport cations across the cell membrane. Beauvericin and enniatins are cytotoxic, as they decrease cell viability, promote cell cycle arrest, and increase apoptosis and the generation of reactive oxygen species in several cell lines.

Although the level of physical activity in daily life (PADL) plays a vital role concerning the health of subjects with chronic lung diseases, it remains uncertain how PADL patterns compare among different conditions. This study's objective was to compare the PADL levels of subjects with COPD, asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); and to investigate PADL behaviour in different diseases' severity. Stable subjects who had not undergone pulmonary rehabilitation in the previous year were included.

Global prevalence and gender inequalities in at least 60 min of self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity 1 or more days per week: An analysis with 707,616 adolescents.

J Sport Health Sci

September 2024

Department of Physical Education, Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), São Cristóvão 490100-000, Brazil; Faculty of Health Sciences, Universidad Autónoma de Chile, Providencia 7500912, Chile.

Background: Guidelines recommend that adolescents should accumulate an average of 60 min per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, using only this cut-off could hide important information. For instance, from a population-level point of view, increasing physical activity for those with no or low physical activity could provide more health benefits than increasing physical activity for those with intermediate levels.

Article Synopsis
  • * The analysis revealed that teens with fewer PE classes (specifically no classes) had lower chances of sitting for 3+ hours per day compared to those with at least one class weekly; however, those with 2 or more classes per week tended to sit more.
  • * The findings suggest that increased frequency of PE classes correlates with more leisure sitting time among adolescents, regardless of geographic region or country income level.

Background: Although invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) has contributed to the survival of preterm infants with extremely low birth weight (ELBW), it is also associated with unsatisfactory clinical outcomes when used for prolonged periods. This study aimed to identify factors that may be decisive for extubation success in very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) preterm infants.

Methods: The cohort study included preterm infants with gestational age (GA) <36 weeks, birth weight (BW) <1500 grams who underwent IMV, born between 2015 and 2018.
