Oxidative stress (OS) has been strongly associated with postprandial lipemia (PPL) in humans, and still requires further investigation in dogs. However, since lipemia interferes with spectrophotometric determinations such as those used to assess OS, the present study investigated the effect of PPL on OS parameters of healthy dogs. Twenty dogs had lipemic postprandial samples compared to the average of two non-lipemic moments.

Curcumin (Cur), is a pigment with antiproliferative activity but has some pharmacokinetic limitations, which led researchers to look for more effective structure analogs. This work investigated the effects of Cur and compared them with the two analogs, demethoxycurcumin (DeMC) and dimethoxycurcumin (DiMC), to elucidate their mechanisms of action. The cytotoxic, antiproliferative, and genotoxic effects these compounds were correlated based on gene expression analysis in the human renal adenocarcinoma cells (786-O).

A locus on chromosome 13, containing multiple TIR-NB-LRR genes and SNPs associated with M. javanica resistance, was identified using a combination of GWAS, resequencing, genetic mapping and expression profiling. Meloidogyne javanica, a root-knot nematode, is an important problem in soybean-growing areas, leading to severe yield losses.

Increasing physical activity (PA) is a complex and challenging task in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, some questions are raised regarding the evaluation of PA in these patients: Have all aspects of PA evaluation in patients with COPD already been explored in the scientific literature and clinical practice? What is the clinical importance of assessing PA inequality? PA inequality is defined as the Gini coefficient (Gini) of the PA distribution of a population and is already shown to have implications for public health in the general population. It is a simple tool that might allow a better understanding of PA disparities among different COPD populations, although to our knowledge there is no previous investigation of PA inequality in patients with COPD using the Gini.

The study investigated whether high-intensity exercise impairs inspiratory and expiratory muscle perfusion in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We compared respiratory local muscle perfusion between constant-load cycling[sustained at 80% peak work rate (WRpeak)] and voluntary normocapnic hyperpnea reproducing similar work of breathing (WoB) in 18 patients [forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV): 58 ± 24% predicted]. Local muscle blood flow index (BFI), using indocyanine green dye, and fractional oxygen saturation (%StiO) were simultaneously assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) over the intercostal, scalene, rectus abdominis, and vastus lateralis muscles.

Social participation is defined as the integration of people into community activities in voluntary or mandatory, formal and informal social groups, which could have consequences concerning the health of the older population. A search was conducted on Pubmed, Scielo, Scopus and Google Scholar. For this review, 16 articles studying the impact of social participation on older adults were analyzed, including a total of 73,698,096 individuals from North America, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

Oxidative stress occurs when there is greater than optimal production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or an antioxidant system failure. Calves produced using in vitro fertilization (IVF) or cloning (CA) have greater mortality rates, with greater incidence of respiratory diseases, which could be explained by the deleterious outcomes from oxidative stress. Calves were studied that were produced using: artificial insemination (AI; n = 20), in vitro fertilization (IVF; n = 15) or cloning (CA; n = 15).

Different species of the genus have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation, fever, ulcers, diabetes, and diarrhea. We analyzed the phytochemical profile of the hydroethanolic extract from leaves by electrospray ionization ion trap tandem mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection, and examined whether it alone and in combination with cisplatin interfered with cell proliferation and death processes in HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and FGH (human gingival fibroblasts) cells. Five compounds were identified in the extract: gallic acid, myricetin-3---l-arabinopyranoside, quercetin-3---d-galactopyranoside, myricetin-3---l-rhamnopyranoside, and myricetin-3---d-galactopyranoside.

Obesity patients are more susceptible to develop COVID-19 severe outcome due to the role of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the viral infection. ACE2 is regulated in the human cells by different genes associated with increased (TLR3, HAT1, HDAC2, KDM5B, SIRT1, RAB1A, FURIN and ADAM10) or decreased (TRIB3) virus replication. RNA-seq data revealed 14857 genes expressed in human subcutaneous adipocytes, including genes mentioned above.

Carnosic acid (CA) is a phenolic diterpene with many important biological activities including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-proliferative properties. The aim of the present study was to investigate cytotoxic activity, cell cycle, apoptotic, and molecular effects attributed to CA in non-tumoral IMR-90 (human fetal lung fibroblasts), as well as tumoral NCI-H460 (human non-small-cell lung cancer) cell lines. Cell proliferation was evaluated by Real-Time Cell Analysis system, while apoptosis and cell cycle were assessed using flow cytometry.

Its etiology is not well defined, because there are several factors that may trigger it such as physical and/or emotional stresses, or a genetic susceptibility, involving serotonergic, dopaminergic and catecholaminergic paths. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the strength of the lower limb, genetic polymorphism of the serotonin receptor gene HTR in women with fibromyalgia.

Purpose: There is no standardized approach for preserving olfactory function in the side of the nose where biopsy of the olfactory epithelium (OE) is performed. Moreover, a gold standard technique for obtaining human OE in vivo is still lacking. We determined the efficacy of obtaining good-quality OE specimens suitable for pathological analysis from the lower half of the superior turbinate and verified the safety of this procedure in maintaining bilateral and unilateral olfactory function.
