Appl Psychophysiol Biofeedback

December 2024

Department of Medical Sciences and Public Health, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, Bournemouth University, Bournemouth, BH8 8GP, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to validate a 14-second femoral arterial waveform method for measuring heart rate variability (HRV) against the standard 300-second ECG method.
  • Conducted with 100 adult servicemen, strong correlations were found between the two methods for heart rate (HR) and RMSSD, but HR showed significant differences while RMSSD did not.
  • The results suggest that the 14-second PWV-derived RMSSD is reliable compared to the ECG gold standard, although heart rate measurements vary based on the method used.

Household carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in a large African city: An unquantified public health burden?

Environ Pollut

June 2024

Institute for Social Marketing and Health, University of Stirling, Stirling, FK9 4LA, UK. Electronic address:

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuels that is linked to mortality and morbidity. Household air pollution from burning fuels on poorly ventilated stoves can lead to high concentrations of CO in homes. There are few datasets available on household concentrations of CO in urban areas of sub-Saharan African countries.

Nano-indentation techniques might be better equipped to assess the heterogeneous material properties of plaques than macroscopic methods but there are no bespoke protocols for this kind of material testing for coronary arteries. Therefore, we developed a measurement protocol to extract mechanical properties from healthy and atherosclerotic coronary artery tissue sections. Young's modulus was derived from force-indentation data.

As a member of the HPSG family, heparin is often used as a specific probe of their role in cell physiology; indeed, we have previously shown a reduction in the tumorigenicity of breast cancer cells when cultured in its presence. However, a partial reversal of the anti-tumorigenic effect occurred when the treated cells were cultured in fresh medium without heparin, which led us to consider whether a more persistent effect could be achieved by treatment of the cells with small extracellular vesicles (sEV) from heparin-treated cells. The tumorigenicity was analyzed using sEV isolated from the culture medium of heparin-treated MCF-7 and MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells (sEV-HT) or from conditioned medium following the termination of treatment (heparin discontinued, sEV-HD).

Gene Polymorphism Is Associated with Total IgE in Adult Subjects with Asthma.

J Clin Med

June 2023

Unit of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, Department of Diagnostics and Public Health, University of Verona, 37134 Verona, Italy.

The allergic asthma phenotype is characterized by a T helper type 2 (Th2) immune response, based on Immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated type 1 hypersensitivity reactions. Total IgE is the sum of all IgE types produced by the human body and is used as a biomarker of inflammation in asthma. We analysed data collected in 143 asthma cases (median age 42.

In food allergy management, the avoidance of the allergen that caused the reaction plays a fundamental role. Nevertheless, that can be thwarted in case of accidental exposure to a rare or hidden allergen, causing the adoption of a monotonous diet and a consequent reduction in the quality of life of the patient and their family. The identification of a rare and hidden allergen is an important diagnostic challenge, taking into account that a significant proportion of all food reactions is in reality due to them.

Aims: Deciding to stop or continue anticoagulation for venous thromboembolism (VTE) after initial treatment is challenging, as individual risks of recurrence and bleeding are heterogeneous. The present study aimed to develop and externally validate models for predicting 5-year risks of recurrence and bleeding in patients with VTE without cancer who completed at least 3 months of initial treatment, which can be used to estimate individual absolute benefits and harms of extended anticoagulation.

Methods And Results: Competing risk-adjusted models were derived to predict recurrent VTE and clinically relevant bleeding (non-major and major) using 14 readily available patient characteristics.
